The 8 Best Supersets (YOU’RE NOT DOING!!)

Supersets are a workout technique that allow you to train multiple muscle groups (or the same muscle group) with more than one exercise without resting in between sets. This allows you to either speed up the pace of your workout, intensify the effects of your training, or both. In this video, I’m going to show you the 8 best supersets that you are not doing and tell you the specific exercises that will give you the best results if you start using them.
60% off all AX programs - athleanx.com/x/511-workouts

Again, to be clear, a superset is not a drop set technically. A drop set will use the same exercise but progressively lighter weight with each successive consecutive set. What you want to do is make sure that you are picking two different exercises and pairing them together without resting at all between them. The most common way to perform supersets is with opposing muscle groups, such as the biceps and triceps.
My favorite opposing muscle group superset is one that you perform for your arms and it consists of the db incline tricep extension supersetted with bicep spider curls. This gives you the advantage of getting the stretch on the long head of the triceps and then immediately perform a bicep exercise that puts the peak tension in the contracted position of the biceps. This is something that we don’t often do in our workouts let alone the same set combination.
Next, you can incorporate muscle groups that tend to like to work together such as the lats and upper back muscles. Here, I like the combo of the straight arm pushdown with the cable face pulls. The lats not only benefit from the straight arm pushdowns but this helps you to perfect your form on the deadlift which is an exercise that requires strength in this position. The face pull is an incredible builder of the upper back muscles and overlooked rear delts.
The UCV raise and Cavaliere Crossover combination is an example of a superset that targets the same muscle group. This one is better than the old classic bench press into pushups combo since neither of those exercises allows you to train the chest into adduction like both of the exercises in this superset allow you to.
Beyond the pairing of muscles based on function, you can create supersets that rely on purpose. For example, if you want to pre-exhaust a certain muscle group so that you can use lighter than normal weights on an exercise that you normally exclusively train heavy you can do that if you pair them together as part of a superset. The shoulder “L” raise into db presses is a perfect way to do this. Grab a pair of 25 pound dumbbells and rep out to failure on this front delt and middle delt combo and immediately finish out your set by pressing those same “light” dumbbells overhead.
Finally, you have options for open chain into closed chain exercises, loading and de-loading exercises and even strength or power potentiation combos. All of these are incredibly effective, especially if performed at the right time and for the right purpose in your training cycle. All of the ones shown here are part of my 8 favorite and should be something you try in your workouts.
If you are looking for a training plan that shows you exactly when to perform these and all your exercises for the best results, head to athleanx.com and pick the program best suited to your current goals. Use the program selector tool if you are unsure what program is the best for getting you training like an athlete.

@AL-SH

Daan Linders I was just gonna say that. I see guys at the gym doing 3-5 reps of weighted pull-ups and dips (not to mention their bad form and incomplete range of motion). Body weight Pull-ups, push-ups and dips have been my go to exercises for years now and have helped me build more stamina and flexibility than most people I see at the gym.
@TacoStanMan
@TacoStanMan 5 жыл бұрын
With my clients, I always call pull-ups/dips “variable pull-ups/dips”. The idea is to emphasize the fact that you should be doing the exercises with the appropriate amount of weight and progressive overload, just like any other exercise. Most clients start in the “negatives” (assisted) and work their way up from there. Remember: Your body is an excellent source of weight, but that weight is not always the weight you should be lifting. Sometimes it’s less; sometimes it’s more; sometimes it’s “just right”. It’s your job to ensure you don’t let your ego get the better of you. Some clients (usually younger males) are very hesitant to use the assisted pull-up/dip machine because they don’t want to look weak. At that point I tell them that they are going to stay that way unless they start from their baseline. Unless you are very overweight but losing that weight, you will likely eventually be able to do the exercises with your body weight via training with other exercises, but you would be seriously short-changing yourself in that scenario. Not sure why I typed this out as a comment on a comment where few will actually see it, but if even one person benefits from it, then it was worth the 5 minutes in my book.

Recently i started working out, in the beginning I was doing some random shit without any knowledge then i found your channel and dude it changed everything , so first and foremost thank you for all your free hard work that you are providing us. Now the question I want to ask is that, is it normal to get some tiny varicose veins on the arms or the chest after a workout and what does it mean physiological wise? I really hope you can take time and put science behind that. Cheers and thank you good sir

Salym Vericose veins are those veins that are long elongated dilated, and torturous throughout the day not in some particular time..so if you're seeing it after exercise and later it get disappear then.it is not a vericose vein..2nd thing vericose veins rarely occurs in upper limb..mostly due to blunt trauma..

You probably don't mean Varicose veins... so maybe describe what you _do_ mean, so we can visualize it.
@FalseF4CZ
@FalseF4CZ 7 жыл бұрын
Salym They aren't varicose veins if they don't hurt you. It is simply your body trying to pump oxygenated blood into your muscles so when you workout, you need more oxygen and blood pumping through your body so the blood gets recycled faster vs when you're resting. Faster pumping = bigger veins and smaller ones popping out

I know what you mean, I get those on the top of my shoulders after a hard workout. I never understood what they are. They aren't varicose veins though.

Salym not varicose veins just a pump. What's a pump you ask? A pump is a boner for your entire body

Ey jeff! What do you think about making a vídeo about scoliosis? I have c type scoliosis and I have noticed that it impacts on my performance on upper body exercises, the left side, I have noticed muscular imbalances on that side and some discomfort that I used to think that comes from my left shoulder but now I realize that is around the area between my left scapula and my spine... Any recommendations?

I have found some videos about muscle imbalances but not about scoliosis per se..... I really like Jeff's approach and explanations, that's why I'm asking... I'm not saying that he hasn't made a video about, if so, I haven't find/seen it yet... But I will keep searching

Chirag Patel very old video he does, only once a week, since you usually hit them indirectly anyway... Back hits bi indirectly, so when you do biceps, hit it 48 hours later.... Of course, his actual programs do a chest/tri etc... Routine for a month or so, which seems to go against his thought of not doing bi/back and tried/ chest same day.......
@boholaesthetic3416

Chirag Patel well as for frequency and day of workout, its up to you every person has different body With different kind of muscle and genetics, Jeff said it himself (of course not the exact words but that's the thought)

i'll try to hop in for a bit, i once did a month, like the entire month, no rest day in between of just chest, i was really skinny back then so i wanted to build muscle, and even tho everything points out it shoulda gone super bad, thats the only reason i never do chest on the gym, it grew as much as i wanted and even more, i had those veins popping in the middle like i was ripping it apart so it stayed with me, altho im rn doing a 1 per week kinda experiment because i havent really been trying fitness for too long ive always been lean tho since i built when i was young a set of bars and did lotsa calisthenics, and its been working out the way i wanted it to, biceps and triceps and every other muscle growing and properly, they grow and every bit of time more and more as well as getting lean in the process, veiny and big at the same time, altho im always trying to improve in my training, hitting them differently, applying everything ive learnt from jeff on his videos, my point is, what has worked for me? both ways, tho the last one (with lots of rest) does really help, it feels like everytime i train my muscle 1 week after i go in full power because he had all the rest he needed and its ready to get exhausted by me, you should give stuff some tries, you still have lots of time, it doesnt have to be perfect since day 1

Chirag Patel - google "super compensation curve" and look at the images. Super-compensation (adaptation to training that results in improved strength & muscle mass) requires a minimum of 3-6 days - beginner or lower volume workouts would be on the lower end and more advanced trainees or higher volume workouts would be on the higher end. For example, if you're an intermediate trainee and you perform your chest and back workout on Monday, you then need to rest until at least Friday before performing that same workout again.
