Yes! Boot collecting is at the end of the day a hobby you do because you enjoy the craft and art. Some folks like to say they’re into boots for the “cost per wear”, “resolability”, “comfort” and because they “get better with age” and while theres an element of truth in each of these, most boot collectors have gone way past the point of diminishing returns and reasonable use.
@eduardoalvgtz
@eduardoalvgtz 7 ай бұрын
Lol, totally agree with this comment. At which point is “cost per wear” justifiable when you have 15 pairs that cost between $500 and $750

Yeah and I think it's totally fine to just be a collector so long as you understand what you're doing, but when you're berating people's choices for not spending 4 figures on Japanese boots it's like, you've lost perspective
@markgillum5709
@markgillum5709 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Everyone has a number according to a lot of factors, but for those of us who collect, and have sizeable collections, the whole hobby takes on a life of its own. Once you exceed what your daily/weekly/monthly rotation is, you likely won't even be able to wear, much less break in all of the boots without substatial effort. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but it is a numbers thing and forces you to approach your collection in an entirely different way.

#5 is my biggest gripe with boot snobs. Had a pair of PNW boots that felt awful, kept getting the feedback ‘just keep wearing them, they are hard to break in’, after a year of daily wearing at a manual labor job they still werent right, and left me with an unsightly callous that took years to get rid of. They werent cut for my feet, a cheaper boot that is shaped for you will be better in the long run.

I always thought traditionally made boots are superior in comfort, but a recent 3 day hiking trip in the appalachians in my White's made me realize sometimes they really are not. It kept my flat feet from hurting because of the good arch support, but they were so heavy compared to my friends' dedicated hikers, at the end of the trip I could barely walk lol
@Antenox
@Antenox 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, the common aphorism used by backpackers is "An ounce saved on your foot is worth ten on your back." The fact is, modern hiking boots have just as much support as traditionally made boots, and are as comfortable as sneakers. I would never take a traditionally made boot backpacking or even hiking if I had a choice, lol. What traditionally made boots are good for is longevity and versatility. My GS Diesels are my choice for traveling because I can dress them up or down, and they are serviceable enough (albeit heavy) for the outdoors if I don't want to pack an extra pair of hiking boots.
@UnknownUser-rb9pd
@UnknownUser-rb9pd 7 ай бұрын
@@Antenox Though I agree with you (particularly about hiking boots) I'd probably leave both my GS boots at home and take Thursday boots because they're lighter, more cushioned and smart enough and tough enough for general use and travelling. I have learned the hard way that comfort and fit are all important and despite owning boots from Crockett and Jones, Cheaney, Trickers, Carmina, GS, Red Wing etc. my Thursday Captains, Presidents and Diplomats always trump the others for comfort despite being poorer made (which is annoying considering how much I spent on the others ).
@Antenox
@Antenox 7 ай бұрын
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd I would agree on Thursdays. The only reason I don't use mine is that my Captains have Dainite-style soles instead of lugs, so they are limited to urban environments. But when I wear through their soles, I'm going to replace them with lugs so that I can use them more often. That said, my GS Diesels just *look* more upscale because of the contrast welt, so I'm also more inclined to wear them traveling just cuz they make me feel fancier, lol.
@UnknownUser-rb9pd
@UnknownUser-rb9pd 7 ай бұрын
@@Antenox I agree, I have GS Diesels and Edward boots in CXL and they are lovely. I also agree that a lugged sole is more practical though I often take a pair of additional footwear with lugged soles as well if taking my Thursdays. I have hiking shoes from Hanwag or Scarpa and they have lugs though they are a little smaller than aggressive hiking boots soles. I like something lighter than boots sometimes, particularly with shorts.

Thanks to your channel (and a few others), i went from owning one pair of Vans to owning 6 pairs of boots in the space of a year… I have since confronted my problem, and now i only own a pair of RW 1907’s and a pair of Viberg Scouts that were resoled with a wedge (they are fricking gorgeous and an absolute steal from ebay) Put my vans back on this week for the first time in a year and i had forgotten how comfy they are and how good they look- even with rips in the canvas.

I have six pairs of very nice boots ranging from Nicks to Red Wing and I have avoided most of the issues presented in this excellent video by not sharing my interest in quality footwear with anyone else. It's just not worth it to get people and their strongly-held but poorly-thought-through prejudices involved. They will just rain on your little parade until they've sucked all the pleasure out of your pastime. It's the same in any hobby, however: you could have replaced the word Boots in this video with Audio Equipment, Classic Cars, Sailboats, Wine Collecting, Pocket Knives, Bottle Caps, or any other collectible item imaginable, and the same arguments would erupt from the same sort of unpleasant people. People will spoil everything if given the opportunity. Thanks for the video! Well done!

Good point. When entering a new hobby I find it is useful to absorb everyone's opinions, and then focus on your budget and just try to hit as many checkmarks as you can in that price point. Don't go above your price point to get the VERY best, it's usually not worth it.

Love this video! Great points! When I first got into boots, I definitely had some boot care anxiety. I agree it totally comes from mixed information and for me the jump in how much I spent. Previously, I basically wore vans and chucks. So when I spent over $300 on some danners I was nervous about getting the most out of every dollar. I still remember how nervous I was when I conditioned for the first time and they darkened up. Ive basically abandoned that haha. Still have that pair and they’ve got some stitching coming loose, not really waterproof now and I still wear the heck out of them! And now I basically brush when they’re really dirty and I know I’m not gonna use again for over a month and condition once a year or maybe twice a year. Having more boots in the rotation definitely helps with that too but I agree the number some people have at that point you probably won’t wear out any of your boots enough to need a re-sole!
@jameslarue2878
@jameslarue2878 7 ай бұрын
Hah! Got me. I do brush after most wears, but it's just for the meditative pleasure of admiring the boot. Soothing. I have not, will not, try to trash somebody just because they like something different than I do, or because of some imperfection that it takes a magnifying glass to see. I appreciate your insights and your humor. Keep 'em coming!

Nick, I am guessing this is your Maya Copa video. You are somewhat of an enabler when it comes to shoes and boots. I did not know about really good boots till I watched your video's. You along with Trenton and Health and Rose Anvil have taught me to have a good understanding of boots and how they are made. I am guilty of having way more boots then I will ever need. I have an old pair of Red Wings bought years ago cause the only reason I got them was that they where made here. But, I have an obsession with Chukka's and Moc Toes. I own 4 pairs of Chukka's. Will never ever wear them out. Same as my Moc Toes. 6 pairs and counting. I even had to buy a new Moc toe from Thursday. Had to had the Cinnamon Snuff Oil Suede. My Thursday Presidents are 3 yrs old and still look like new. Waiting a pair Nick's Americana Boots that won't be here to Spring. This goes with my 3 pairs of White's and of course I am thinking about a pair JK boots as well. I am not blaming you guys. I have a lot of nice boots and shoes and the money is not wasted, like say on a girlfriend. Keep up the good work, enjoy your channel.

Relatable, funny, & agree. One idea for sustainability would be if you focused on the aging and lifespan of the items rather than showing new stuff. Show how your items age over time and your care of them (which I know you do at times). Or show new stuff w/o buying/owning it.

Got a 9 boot, 3 shoe rotation I wear almost every week. Different boot for day and evening or work and play. When it's raining, place shell cordovan aside in favor of CXL, etc. Since I'm a heavy footed 200 lbs, all have worn in fairly quickly. Almost all were bought as factory seconds or on sale, the exception being full-price Iron Ranger for $329. Rotation should last a decade easily.

All 9 points are spot on. I've been guilty of most of these points with a collection of 10 boots. One thing I never subscribed to is the notion that boots are more comfy than sneakers. By the time your leather insoles are perfectly molded to your feet, the thin layer of cork has probably been compressed as well. How does that provide more shock absorption than a quality pair of sneakers? There's nothing wrong with being passionate about a hobby but let's take a step back and be honest with ourselves instead of taking it too seriously.

All good points. If a boot is quality? Well it doesn't matter where it's made. If you are a boot guy? Well you don't have to have a manual labor job to enjoy boots. And politics should NEVER have anything to do with boots. Politics are overly saturated in everything people do in life these days. That's a big issue I hate. And look, to be clear? I am super proud of the American made boots that we make in this country. It's so cool that we have bragging rights when it comes to how durable and robust of a boot that some American companies can produce in the USA. It's awesome and we should be proud of that. Doesn't mean that we should punish someone for buying a pair of Grant Stones though. As far as how you use your boots? I have a pair of Nick's Falcons in Tanned Waxed Flesh that I keep in near perfect condition. I also have a pair of Red Wing Blacksmiths that I wear every day to work (I am a site supervisor for a roofing company). My Nicks get worn on the weekends or out to nice bars/restaurants ect. Even though it's the toughest, most overbuilt boot I own? Even though it's waxed flesh (everybody says they have to be worn in and lose the wax to look right)? Well I paid a lot for those boots and like to keep them tip top. Where as my Blacksmiths are my dedicated work boot. I always hear "that's not a work boot", "they aren't certified manual labor boots", yada, yada, yada. Well my Red Wing Blacksmiths have outlasted all the all those so called "WORK BOOTS" on the job site. They are saturated with mink oil, they are a totally different color than Copper Rough and Tough was ever meant to be (They are so dark now that they look don't even resemble they leather they were when I got them). I don't need a certified toe, or sole, for the type of manual labor that I have to do onsite. Also the mini lug lasts a long time, doesn't trap mud, dirt, or rocks in the sole. So they are easy to clean. And guess what? Even though they are Heritage boots? They are still super durable, water resistant, and also extremely comfortable. They are lightweight/agile for a work boot and they look great too. My point is, wear your boots how YOU want to wear them. There are no specific rules aside from working a profession that has legal requirements for footwear. All this elitism about perfect stitching and such is total overkill too. It's a boot. Don't forget that. It's not a $2000 pair of Italian dress shoes. Thanks so much for all your videos. And also thanks for causing my boot addiction LMAO. ( I am up to 10 pairs at the moment)

You’d capture 95% of the touted reasons for owning a boot for 5% of what boot collectors spend by buying a “just tried on” grant stone or red wing from a nitpicky collector (who just didn’t like the clicking on the tongue) for a fraction of the price. And actually wear it to death as your one and done boot. 😂

Anyway, I know who you are boot gatekeepers and you need to relax.. also, I’m as proud to be American as anyone, however, not sure you’ve been paying attention lately, but our US government hasn’t been winning any morality awards.. lately as in the last 80+ years for a start. It’s a fine good thing to be proud of where your from but pretty f’n weak to think it makes you better than anyone else. However if you’re writing that vile garbage about other people you don’t know you can be certain you’re someone no one else truly wants to be around. Lighten tf up, life’s as good as you let it be. Casual boots get brushed after heavy use once or twice a month and conditioned maybe 2 times a year. Work boots get brushed every day and conditioned every other month or 2. Dress shoes/boots get a nice polish 1 or 2 times a year depending on the usage. I also keep multiple pairs in rotation because I never wear the same boots 2 days in a row, need to dry out and let the interior breathe in my opinion. Especially work boots. 👍

There is also an element of flexing involved online. Guys collect hundreds of super high end boots and have an entire instagram dedicated to boot pics, basically showing off and flexing how much they can spend on footwear. I think boots are awesome and it's fun to experiment and collect, but once you know what you like, it's a good idea to sell off the excess pairs and focus on a small collection of lifelong pairs.

No. Get regular shoe trees and use a bendy cutting board or a piece of cardboard if you really want to. Boot trees are a waste of money

Amen to all of that! I’ve been a fan of yours for a while and watched your evolution from the beginning. I’m a little older than you and had the realization that “this boots will literally last the rest of my life” has finally impacted me and we I’ve stopped with my current lineup and enjoying them and having them properly break in. You’ve nailed the politics and cosplay tough guy underbelly, too. I appreciate your perspective and glad you are still making videos.

In my experience, for my life style yes, boots are comfortable than sneakers, IMO boots are better to be stand up all day, but not to walk, like been in the office, do paperwork, bank long lines, etc the stability for the arch and the ankles shine there, but if you have to walk a lot like a shopping day, a tourist day in another city, anything like that the softness and lightness of the sneakers it’s better, I’m all day stand up but not walking so boots are better for me I can make a 12 hour day between work and travel and in the night my feet’s are fresh and good and I can sleep 😴.

lol I got a kick out of this. I will say the r/goodyearwelt subreddit sucks. The mods force everything into "daily threads" and it just suppresses conversation and pictures of great boots. I recently joined the stitchdown discord server and it's exceptional.

I'm a boot nerd and i try to justify the cost with the longevity. but in reality the cheap boots i used to wear would last about a year to 2 years. but at their cost i could wear through 4-5 pairs before i recoup the cost of a PNW brand boot. so that would mean the PNW boots had to last at least 5-8 years before a resole to make the cost equivalent. so i'm just going to be honest and say i love boots and buy them for the look. i have boots i wear a few times a year and some that i wear once a week, and some that are still in the boxes they shipped in. i'm not buying quality boots because they last longer, I'm buying boots cause i got a fetish for boots.

Didnt mention the bsrgsins, I am quite disciplined, until I see a pair of hand made boots that no one wants for half price. I was going to wait till my birthday to get the red wing muc toe, then I saw it with £100 of the RRP in a known and respected retailers site. Sometimes I make a cheeky bid on ebay, like £100 pound for an Iron ranger that was too big for the owner and he never wore and won!!!

Jake at @almostvintagestyle is notorious for this kind of pickiness and at a certain point when your whole point about a boot comes down to stitch density and stitch lines and perfect finishing you’ve forgotten why people got into the hobby. To your point, Nick, the whole idea is that someone worked hard to make what you’re wearing. If you want laser accurate lines and stitches then 3D print some boots

Absolutely LOVE this video, thank you for bringing up all these points. The extreme views of some of the people out there, be it as nationalists or gatekeepers is extreme. I admit I have to try not to develop any of these habits, take more time between buying boots, not babying them too much like I was at first, and just enjoying the boots I have. I did return a pair of boots once, as there was a stitch loose enough I could fit a pen through it, I asked first if I could cut it and burn the ends, or what I could do on my end and they simply told me to return them, but people I spoke to made me afraid if I left it as, the stitch would catch something, break and the "whole boot unravel" which seemed unlikely but I didn't know better and just wanted to fix that one stitch. Anyway everything here was great advice.

Oh sweet Christ the last part drives me insane. I remember scrolling through a certain PNW maker’s subreddit and the complaints I saw made me do a double take. I remember one person was complaining that the welt stitches weren't perfectly aligned 🤦‍♂️. I understand that your spending a lot of money. But these are still handmade products and humans aren't perfect. If you want factory perfect footwear. Go back to buying sneakers. P.s. My definition of handmade boots is the boots must be lasted by hand. And that seems to be the industry standard.

Occasionally I wonder why your channel isn't bigger. Especially for someone who's been at this for a good while and put out a lot of content. And I think it's not because you're not "good" or deserving to be bigger, I think it's actually quite the opposite. You might be too on the money, too good and niche with your videos to have a really broad appeal. On the one hand, I'd like you to grow and get something tangible for what you put out, some quantifiable metric of how much what you do is appreciated out here. But a casual sub is counted just as much as a super hard, devoted sub, they are both +1. On the other hand, I wouldn't want you to make changes that would lead to better growth if that means diluting what you do. So, here we are. Maybe that's you and you're not gonna hit the millions of subs. Not sure how you would feel about that. In any case I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate the hell out of your tenacity and commitment to this topic, it was an invaluable resource when first getting into boots and it's still the best all these years down the road. I haven't really found anyone to compete, not even the channels that broadly cover the same topics, same kinds of products. And I'm sure there are tons more that feel the same.

what an unusually thoughtful comment! i think it's because a lot of my content is based on search queries and search-focused (as opposed to social/click-focused) channels tend to not get as many subscribers because the goal is more to rank for random searches by strangers to the channel? also maybe it's my accent? the thing is i have a comfortable living (and multiple employees believe it or not) the way it is now like this strategy is working and if I were just trying to live off the KZfaq channel I wouldn't have been able to quit my job 2 years ago to Stridewise full time, so like, if I were really chasing KZfaq subs and not spending most of my time on the website then I'd have more subs but less freedom/money. So I think the way it is now is how I'd like it to be. I'm going to hammer shorts/reels a ton this year though and see if I can get to 100k though!

I really disagree about sneakers being more comfortable. Like, I actually do. Have owned plenty of both to have an opinion, and the squish of sneakers wears on you quickly. It's like sleeping on a soft mattress. You may like it at first, but it's hard on the body. I think it's partly individual needs though. Not even just preference but the way an individual walks, foot shape, etc.

I used to be a tool snob. Used a Hitachi roofing gun and complained about until it worked flawlessly. I looked like an idiot growsing about quality tool that did the job I needed but didn't have the right paint. Lots of stuff is good. Some is great. The only way to know is to use it. No one likes not getting what they pay for. But some people love to just pay a lot more for something that does the job. Life tends to go smoother when you just calm down.

I don't think there's a type of footwear as controversial as boots. I remember in early 2000's there was a discussion whether guys who wear boots look "gay"; and if one chooses to wear boots (to boost their so called "masculinity"), they should be careful not too pick boots with higher shafts, again avoid looking "gay". And then there's this notion that boots, like other pieces of clothings, are "seasonal" and should be suitable for autumn/winter outfits rather than summer/hot weather outfits. And if one insists on wearing boots on a hot sweltering day they are advised to reach for a pair of desert boots as they are meant for such purpose. Heaven forbid that a person wears a pair of tall logger boots in forest-fire burning California unless they would like to feel "uncomfortable". Uncomfortable to the point of what? Their feet overheated that they couldn't walk anymore?! I am overdramatised and overreacting here but for someone who lives in a tropical country where flip-flops and sandals are the go-to footwear, pieces of advice like these did my head in to a degree that I would always hesitate if I should put on a pair of boots.
