My friend's dad had one when we were in high school. Of course it was off limits but his parents went away for a couple of weeks so of course we had to do it. Same colour combo as Hoovie's, but an earlier year with an auto. Didn't quite do a "Risky Business" but my friend managed to underestimate his speed/overestimate his braking distance. We slid right through a stop sign and into a farmer's field. Managed to get the car out undamaged and drove it home at about 20mph the whole way. Washed it, put it back exactly where his dad had parked it, and called it a night. The perfect crime. About two months later his dad took it in for brake service and the dealer found a tremendous amount of mud, grass, and even some lengths of barbed wire wrapped around the front suspension. Oops.

I hope Hoovie keeps this for a long time. I hope to be able to afford one some day. The color is just absolutely gorgeous. If you now have a 928 your not that Dumb. Back when this car was conceived it was supposed to replace the 911. I'd take a 928 over any 911 anytime. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.

Reminds me of the two 928 Clarkson used in a couple of Top Gear challenges. 1) In the cheap Porsche challenge from 2004 he had a 928 from 1983. Can't remember what he paid but it was 1500£ or less. 2) In the Patagonia special from 2014 he had a newer 928 GT with the infamous registration "H982 FKL". I drove an '85 928S2 5 speed for 19.5 years and the maintenance? I had to work on accessories now and then, but the car really wasn't that bad. I drove it all over the country when it was 17+ years old and didn't have a bit of trouble. The timing belt: Porsche recommends every six years/60,000 miles, but I did mine at 45,000 mile intervals. You replace the belt, the rollers, and the water pump and you are looking at $1500-$2000 in work, unless you do it yourself and then it works out to about $500. Parts: 928 International in Los Angeles has nearly everything and often times has a used part for sale on the cheap. Really, these are not expensive cars if you can do minor things yourself, and the design is so timeless that oftentimes restaurants offered me to valet park mine for free, so they could park it in front to make the restaurant look glamorous...

Quirks: Horn cover and door cards are not original...but Porsche did do that cloth in 944 and you could buy it in euro cars (I own an 85 928 factory logo cloth in burgundy). It's tastefully done (imho) and easy to replace if someone hates it. The rear visors are to shield the back window sun (back of the head and neck) for rear passengers in the greenhouse. The Porsche radio is expensive and nice Get Roger at 928sRus on speed dial. Rennlist is also your friend. It's not that hard to work on and parts are not Chevy cheap, but it's not Ferrari $$$. Most of us do our own work in the 928 community. 928 owners Club is going to Philly this summer for our annual meet up...FYI I'll give you $15k when you're ready to dump it! ;)

Suspension: replace with KONI RED shocks substantial upgrade and won't hurt value. The original BOGE rears are hard to get and only slightly less cost. The bushings are all available and should be done at the same time. Have the wizard check the shock adjusters spin and are not corroded...they can be sourced used from a supplier ...but there is an aftermarket solution but you'll have to change the springs.

We went to the Porsche stand where I regaled him with tale of the plastic bumpers. Looking to show him I pushed the rear corner of the bumper in and.....it stayed pushed in. I purchased a 79 928 with 32000 on the clock from the original owner. I had the car for about five years. It was way ahead of it's time. Think about what was on the market back in the late seventies. It drove like a modern car. Because of the low resale value many people who bought a 928 couldn't afford the upkeep and so many 928's with issues changed hands and the problems just mounted. My 928 was very reliable. I kept on top of the maintenance and the car never let me down. It was very comfortable. My opinion is the 928 is one of the best cars Porsche every built. The Achilles heel for me was trying to get my 928 serviced. The local Porsche dealer and so called Porsche specialty shops turned me away. It was very frustrating. Thus I sold the car. My advice to someone considering a 928 is buy the nicest car you can afford. If there is no maintenance records, walk away. It is critical to make sure the timing belt has been serviced. The earlier cars had a Non interference engine. In other words if the belt broke the values were self supporting and would not drop into the engine. Not so with the DOHC units. If the belt breaks you will have a catastrophic engine failure. Also these cars run hot. Make sure the cooling system is in good nick. Hope this helps. Cheers!!!

What a great preliminary review of your new-to-you 928S4. Too many people - not just reviewers or KZfaqrs, but public at large, too - just don’t give certain cars time before they form an opinion. You have to recalibrate your senses to a car like this, especially if you are jumping out of a modern Porsche. As you noted, though, these were impressively modern for a car introduced in 1977, and in the case of the S4, quick by even modern standards. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your experiences!

I always liked the 928 but I was happy to get back in my Supra that day.

Was the overheating normal or something wrong with the car? My 89's temp gauge is usually at 75%. Two mechanics verified the gauge was reading hotter than actual temperature. I'm hoping it's a simple fix.

928 was one of my dream cars when I grew up. These days I'm just happy to wake up next morning. Greetings from Finland. I had to check: The cheapest 928 (4.7) 1987 in Finland has about 120 000 miles and the price is about 20 000 usd. The most expensive one on public sale, is a -93 GTS 5.4, about 50 000 miles and 100 000 usd.

I had a 928 S2 for a couple of years back in the '90's. The best car I ever owned. That V8 engine is fantastic and utterly reliable. I paid 7000 pounds for it at an auction and apart from some new tyres after a year, it cost me nothing. My son was a bit too keen to drive it having only passed his test 6 months before and had already written off a Saab 900 Turbo so rather than cause too big an argument I sold the Porsche and bought a Merc 420SE Saloon which he called an old mans car and refused to even get in it. Great for me. As I said I sold the 928 for 5000 pounds and interestingly it was exported by the buyer to New Zealand where they were fetching very high prices. I long to find another 928 that I can afford to buy but the prices are out of reach these days.

It took me 20 years to get to a point in my life where I could realistically purchase an inexpensive 928. Mine is an 83 so much less hp, but its still reasonable. Just as fast as my 2019 GTI in stock form. Needs a lot of TLC to be beautiful again, but I live that I finally own one.

I agree..the S4 was the best looking of the group. I recall riding around Road America in one of these in the late 80s...very good performance for what I considered a heavy (3500lb) car at that time. 0-60 under 6 seconds and 175mph car. They are a pretty complex car, electronically speaking...so expect a little higher maintenance.

I drove past a 928 at pawnshop in Denver for about a year. It was fairly trashed and they wanted $9500. They dropped it to $7000 and it still sat, which gave me pause, even for a fun but massive project. A month ago it went to $5000 and I though why not. I was finally convinced to buy it, it was already sold, of course.

Your 928 also seems to have what we used to call a 'crooked smile" which is a mis-aligned front deck lid, the gap on the passenger side is slightly wider and it doesn't quite line up with the edge of the fender. this could be from accident damage (bent hinge) or just an adjustment needed.

I loved driving my 944S2 for a decade...but I always dreamt of owning a 928S4 just like the one you bought. However I would have preferred the light metallic blue one with a dark blue leather interior... I had the same rims on my 944, I love those. But my dream of the 928S4 never came true. Here on this side of the Atlantic it is just too expensive for me to maintain (yes timing belt) on the engine. Furthermore we pay way more for gas than you do, even now with skyrocketing gas prices... This car is not very fuel efficient...But thanks for sharing your purchase with us. I am enjoying it very much. Will be looking forward to your bit with the Car Wizzard on this 928S4!

Finally, I have had 8 Porsche’s in my life: a 1972 914 2.0, then six 911’s including bi turbo’s and one 928 and the 928 was the best of them all. Take a 928 to the track and you’ll be surprised how awesome it is. I am guessing the 928 was too perfect of a car and it drove the 911 people crazy, The fact that a front engine car that wasn’t air cooled might be so great. so somehow internally at Porsche they got rid of it. I think the balance and the handling of that 928 was one of the best cars I’ve ever driven.

Nice car, great colour. I first got to drive in one as a passenger in 1980, an acquaintance bought a silver '78 with black pasha interior and I fell in love with the exotic nature of the car. I bought a used one decades later, an '85, which I enjoyed for a few years, but grew tired of the dogleg shift pattern. I found it to be a complete PITA and I'd buy an automatic if I were to buy another one, which I probably won't. I'd rather have a late model 911 C4S if I were to buy a sports car again, but I do still love the styling of the 928. A good portion of the body is aluminum too, for better weight distribution - doors, hood & front fenders.
