I recently took a ceramic tile class. The instructor mentioned that these tiles were all hand laid, by craftsmen. The fact that they are still holding up is a testament to the quality workmanship that they did. To this day, the staggered pattern that they used is still referred to as "subway tile".

City Hall Station looks beautiful and clean even though it's been closed for over 60 years, meanwhile Chambers Street is still open but looks like a dump.

City Hall is closed because later on in the MTA'S existence, the cars got bigger, and all of the cars wouldn't fit in the station and you would need to take a big step to get on the train.

It's a shame that the most beautiful station in the system had to be built on such a heavy curve to go back uptown.

Someone asked how does one get into this old station. If I'm not mistaking, the entrance is on City Hall grounds itself; I think I remember seeing an old subway entrance in City Hall park. You would have to get onto City Hall grounds (pass through security entrance) and then go to the old subway stairway, only when there is an official MTA tour. That's how people are in that station. The only other way is to be in the train itself with approval from conductor or motorman, which nowadays are a certain okay, as you DO see people on board as the train passes by. It has become a tourist attraction and to see how beautiful that station is.

The original cars that the IRT ran only had doors on the very ends of the cars. At the end of the car, the gap between the train and the platform was very small, so no issue

Why was the station closed and is much of it still intact with original features? It reminds me a bit of the former Aldwych station on the London Underground, which closed 23 years ago but is still intact and used as a film set. The London Transport Museum runs guided tours of it sometimes. The main difference between Aldwych in London and this one however is that Aldwych was on a branch line, but they can run trains on it for filming.

Sadly it's too small to fit most trains and modern-day subway trains can't load and unlaod on sharp curves without gap fillers which would be a hassle considering the loading and unloading time. Plus the ridership would be so, so LOW that the incentive isn't there, however, it should be preserved none the less

Am I correct in hearing that the MTA does allow passengers to stay on the 6 train if they want to when it hits the south end of Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, so that they can see the old City Hall stop? I wanted to do that on my most recent NYC trip a few years ago when I heard others mention that tip just before my most recent NYC trip, and I was bummed that I didn't quite have enough time to try doing that. I guess certain 6 train operators would allow you to do that while the train is turning around, anyway?

Why Don't They Just Extend The Platform A Bit (5 More Cars) And Add The Platform Extension Thingies Like At South Ferry, Clean And Maybe Revamp The Station, Add A New Entrance And Re-Open The Station? It's As Simple As That! Also I Have A Question, Is The Color Under The Car # State Which Line They Use? Example: 7th Avenue, Lexington Avenue, Flushing.
@DJHammersTrains
@DJHammersTrains 8 жыл бұрын
+Jarek Alexander The station entrance is right next to City Hall, inside the security zone. Also, the ridership would be so low that it wouldn't really justify opening the station. The color under the car numbers is an indicator of the yard the car is assigned to, although at the moment, a lot of cars are being loaned between yards, so they're not really accurate.

@@basictransportenthusiast4386 This station is more protected and monitored by MTA and the NYC transit museum. I think I read somewhere that they have motion censors on the stairs.

Why the trains cross the station but without stop?
@ss04to06
@ss04to06 4 жыл бұрын
The tracks are on a loop. These trains end their run at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and then use the loop to turn back to the station to go north.

Why did this station closed for?
@ateltoni
@ateltoni 4 жыл бұрын
It was closed because of the sharp curve, wide gap, longer trains and low passenger demand.

Munipals Trains layouts me and you both I wish the MTA would of just made more R188's for the 7 and the 6 could of kept R142as and the 3 could get R62A's and the 1 could just have r62's

That curve is tight AF! How in the hell did they expect people to board there? Then again, when this station was in service people were a lot smarter and we had a lot less lawyers.

It has NOTHING to do with that at all. Back then subway cars had doors on the ends so no gap issue, and trains were smaller too. Most if not all modern day subway trains are too long and dont have the advantages of end to end doors. Today MTA gives tours via the City Hall entrence and on rare occasions uses gap fillers to get people off the train

+Nicky DeGirolamo Thank You AJ LEE I am a sasha banks namoi paige guy There really wouldn't be much a point to reopening this station. It would probably cost hundreds of millions of dollars to adapt it for modern rolling stock and it would redundant considering its right next to a station which is currently in service and has an entry point located near the city hall.
