Fascinating. My dad worked on the underground from 1963 - 1993. He was a guard, then a motorman, based at Acton Town on the District Line, and then was a Revenue Inspector when he retired. He sadly passed away 9 months after retiring. When he knew mum and I were going to the Ideal Home Exhibition at Olympia, we'd either get a lift in the cab of the train or meet him for a cuppa in one of the canteens on the line. Such lovely memories.

Dale I am so truly grateful for this video. I live right next to Oakwood station but suffer from fear of being stuck in a tunnel. Life would be so much easier if I could use the tube - and your explanations from the cab view have finally made me decide to go to the west end on tuesday - its a big deal for someone with claustrophobic issues. Knowing the reasons trains stop in tunnels has really helped. You don’t know what you’ve done for me mate 🥹

Many years ago I had the pleasure of spending a wonderful Sunday afternoon with my brother in law in the cab for the entire trip to Cockfosters and back to South Harrow. Experiences you never forget !!

Back in the late 60s, I used to hitch hike everywhere and used to get lifts from near Farnham, Surrey up to London. I used to get a lift to nearby Hounslow West, which I think was then the end of the line, then run to central London. Great memories.

Really enjoyed your commentary Dale. I used to be a secondman based at Stratford, in the old BR days of 1979. I wish, I'd had the technology then to be able to make cab rides. In 1985, I spent lots of time photographing the underground network. I loved those 1959 stock trains that ran on the Central line.

Great insight on the London Underground, I remember as a kid I was always a bit paranoid going under the thames between I think Embankment and Waterloo on the bakerloo line, you could actually hear the difference in the sound once it was under the river.

I used to fly for a living, but I found your piece far more interesting - thank you.

I’ve been a tube traveller for over 50 years and this is a wonderful video thank you so much, and I’ve been on your line! Many times!

I always like the fact that the Piccadilly is termed as an east-west oriented line, but at Cockfosters the train starts off in a south-easterly direction, and continues for many miles in a more or less southerly direction!

Thanks very much for the tour of London, I'm Australian (from Melbourne) and never been to England so I appreciate you doing this as its probably closest I'll ever get to experiencing it. In Melbourne we have a very small city loop, but nothing like London's ofcourse. I think Piccaddilly was the prettiest station with the multi coloured tiling circles. I have watched train journies of my own areas but they dont include commentaries so again, thanks for making the effort to narrate amidst your job.

I loved every minute of this…..My Grandfather was a driver on London Transport and sadly passed away after his shift on Edgware Station back in the late sixties. His badge number was 1117 and I still have it alongside his whistle…thanks for this….He may have done this route all those years ago.

It is about 50 years since I last made use of this line, from Bounds Green or Arnos Grove along the Northern section and once only about 35 years ago to Heathrow, but I still remember many of the stations along the line. A very enjoyable video and the commentary was great.

I'm amazed you are allowed to put up this video, hope it doesn't get taken down! I've been travelling the Picadilly line since it was running 1923 Standard Stock. I was young but still remember like yesterday. They were absolutely as noisy as a rock concert, and in the evening rush you'd have smoking cars full of bowlwr hatted city gents smoking cigars and pipes, hidden behjbd broadsheets. Then we would be packed in as sardines. Best fun was rmtravelljng in the guard's car, the guard would simply raise a metal bar and I aleays wanged to press one of his worn buttons! The most interesting part of line when I was a kid was the windy section around Covent Garden because not only were the trsins deafening noisy, the screech of the wheels on the curves and watching the cars snake was amazing. Never scared me - but Northfields always scared me as I wondered how I would get home if the trsin went into the sudings by mistake. I knew as a toddler that those tracks were full of lethal electricity!

Wow! Great video, thanks . Back in the 60s, we used Cockfosters to Turnpike lane and return for years after many Saturday nights out. Saw a video and news that in 2025 there is 94 new trains coming to this line built by Siemans. They are beautiful machines.

Really interesting. I was impressed at the condition and quiet ride of a 40 year old train. The last time I travelled on the underground about ten years ago on a trip to the British Museum I was appalled at the hideous noise created on certain parts of the track. It made conversation impossible.

Thank you so much Dale. Travelling Heathrow to central London since 1983, initially for work and in recent years, family visits, you've brought me to stations I have long wondered about. As as child in the 1960's, the Hornby train sets planted a seed which to this day provides hours of enjoyment on the rail system. I don't know which I enjoy more , travelling on the trains or just sitting in the stations taking in the atmosphere.

Great commentry......loved this.....like being in the cab with you. My late Dad was a BR Inter-City driver for more than 40 years. Noticed with great interest the hundreds of Cables running through the stations. They were hidden behind the station fascia......you could see them when the train entered each tunnel. Lots of them were probably BT Cables.....and many more for the signals. Amazing they could produce all this well over a hundred years ago.......back breaking work it must have been!!!....... thank you Dale.

Something mystical about the Underground. Was my first big trip away with my Mum and Dad in 1994. We stayed practically next to Waterloo and they sold the best doughnuts ever with lovely chocolate on top.

Nice video and commentary - thank you. As you entered Northfields you will have seen a series of concrete pillars on the right hand side of the eastbound local line. This used to carry a high level walkway from an alternative entrance leading to the other end of the platforms. As this entrance was probably nearer to South Ealing, it was dismantled in 1942.

I used to live Edgware and early one morning I was getting tube to go to work as a bus driver, my car had broken down tube driver saw me and realised I was in bus drivers uniform and asked if I wanted cab ride, of course! What a great experience I will never forget he had been a driver for over 35yrs we had a very interesting journey chatting about his experiences, I enjoyed this video have subscribed ❤

Great video thanks. Answers a lot of questions I had and generated some more now as well. When I come over to London I’m not great in the pipe - if the train stops in their for too long and it’s not a branch off or passing point - so the walls are inches from the carriage either side, I’ve got about a 5 minute window before I’m in panic mode. So much easier when a driver tells you what’s happening 😂

This is great, i woek for TFL surface transport and have a few train driver friends. I've been out on the central line and lucky enough to operate it. I still would like to become a train operator, but so far, i haven't passed the first stage.

Excellent video very informative, travelled the Piccadilly a lot for Saturday day trips to London, I’ve lost count how many times we did this. Would drive down to Cockfosters from Bedford, while watching this I was trying to workout the first time we did this trip, but all I can remember is the price of an all zones ticket was about £7 and the car park at Cockfosters was a £1 all day.

Great commentary, takes me back to the 70's the last time I travelled by underground.

Great video, Dale, the commentary is great. We regularly used to travel from Northfields to Manor House in the 60s to visit my Nan and Grandad. To see it from the drivers cab is a real treat.

My first trip on the London Underground was on the Picadilly Line to Cockfosters from Heathrow to King's Cross January 2007.

I came across this one by accident, but very enjoyable. I used to live in Southgate back in time so a bit of memory lane for me.
