I enjoyed the video; it's always good to see the positive side of Marawi and the kindness of the people that live there. As for the issue with the van driver, he really didn't overcharge since you agreed to his terms, although hessantly, and your destination was on the opposite side of the city as Mindanao State University, where he originally thought he would be taking you. The P150 rate found on the website you showed is for a fully loaded 10-passenger commercial van, one-way terminal-to-terminal. If you wanted to hire a commercial van solo, you would have to pay P1,500 to make up for the empty seats, along with an extra charge to be dropped at an address that is not along the route to the van terminal. Some commercial vans will not take you to an address that's not along the route, and you are left with having to find an alternative form of transportation to take you the rest of the way. Private vans and SUVs like the one you chose charge whatever they think a passenger is willing to pay, which can vary quite a bit. Since you appeared ready to go at that moment and agreed to pay $1,000, there was really no problem at that point. You could have told the driver you were willing to wait for an additional passenger and would pay P500, and he would have agreed since he already had the other seats filled. You could have also asked around rather than accepting a ride with the first driver that approached you, and you probably could have gotten a much better rate since the drivers are competing for passengers and want to leave the terminal as soon as possible. The extra P500 at the end of the trip was also reasonable. Any destination on the opposite side of the Agus River as the van terminal will have an additional charge. You have to consider that the driver had to go to the far side of Marawi to reach the Lake View Resort and had to return to the terminal empty, which is about 10 kilometers round trip and roughly 30 minutes of driving time. When you were at the terminal, the driver said he was going to MSU, and you said you were going to Marawi, so the driver asking for the extra fare upon your arrival at the hotel shouldn't have come as a shock since it's on the far side of the city opposite MSU and probably in an area he's not used to going to. In the end, you got a pretty good deal. You were able to travel from the terminal in Illigan directly to the hotel without the discomfort of being in a crowded commercial van, which may have had frequent stops along the way and may not have taken you all the way to your destination, which would have required additional fare from the next mode of transportation you would have had to take.

Dang thats expensive. Im a local from Iligan and to go to marawi isnt really that expensive . The driver was asking too much taking advantage of someone whos new to their eyes. Glad you keep it cool, otherwise it could have gone really bad. Stay safe man.

#2 Going back to 1988 my wife and I and our 3 yr old son were going to Cebu for a month. BUT, a few weeks before, Rebels had run through the Airport in Cebu and my wife said I would stand out too much so we went to Hawaii for the month. There was next to nothing at the Airport back then. You got off the plane on the Tarmac and walked inside through customs. Your luggage was dropped off in a wide open space and you wandered around to find it. My wife lost her Duty Free bag, it was sitting on the floor next to her and she was busy watching our son. Easy for someone to slide up, she turns her head and it was gone. I hope he got a big hangover.

In January 2023 I took a trip just to LA, the Santa Monica Pier area, and San Francisco. I expected to see homeless encampments everywhere and homeless people all over but honestly? I didn't...now, maybe it was in a different area but especially in San Francisco I expected it to be worse. I didn't drive everywhere, I didn't have the time, but I barely saw any. The reason you paid 10X the actual price is because you agreed to pay. In Phils everyone thinks that foreigners are rich and therefore should be charged more as they believe in "share the wealth" Basically, if you think you are being overcharged you need to walk away. Example 1 - I lined up for a BBQ chicken from a street vendor....2 x people before me were charged 200 pesos for a large chicken, I ordered a smaller chicken and was quoted 500 pesos? When I asked wtf the vendor replied....you are foreigner so you can pay more...kudos to her as they are not normally so straight up....I tried to bargain but she would have none of it...I walked away - and she obviously preferred to not make a sale rather than give it to me for non-foreigner price. Example 2 - pulled over by traffic enforcer for not wearing helmet on motorbike, when the girl I was with stated to the cop..."but Kuya no one is wearing a helmet"...his response was..."yea but they can't afford, he can". Example 3 - when girls with 1/2 babies (Foreigner/Filipino) go to markets where prices are not shown, they have to leave the baby at home with a sitter, otherwise they are quoted higher prices as it is assumed that they must have foreigner money available. Example 4 - when girl uses trikes often and trike rider knows that she has access to foreigner money.....why do you think so many "foreigners girls" end up with a Filipino trike rider boyfriend as well?...they can smell money I could give many more examples... but you get the picture... ALL Foreigners have money, MOST locals do not......which is why live is very tough for a broke foreigner in Phils.

You paid more because of racism. All foreigners are viewed as a source of extra income and The Philippines has a strong begging mentality. It happens elsewhere in South East Asia sadly but seems particularly bad there. How many times can you remember someone there refusing a handout? How many locals have helped you pay the local price when overhearing you being cheated? I'm guessing the answer is zero or close to zero to both questions, and is indicative of the entrenched over charging of foreign 'guests'.
