@@nagualdesign "Bugs" and "insects" are often used interchangeably even if they're not exactly the same thing. The former rolls off the tongue easier. But you are correct.

Isn´t it the same with humans ? Dumb Girls are looking for Guys with muscels, while smarter ones are looking for also smart and/or good looking ones. Fat ones quite often go for either ugly or ultra slim and complet inhuman ugly ones swallow theyr pride and become crazy cat womans ?

+Leopardmask I'm not so sure. Humans are very effectively de-terraforming the planet. And species-ism plays an extremely large part in the selection of microhabitats that get conserved or managed. Look at how many rivers are stocked with a preferred sport-fish, or how many people have jumped onboard the 'protect the milkweed' campaigns. It's more about human interest than ecology. And I'm not convinced that 'beauty by accident' is a valid evolutionary concept.

I always advise budding lepidopterists to save years of painstaking time and effort differentiating Moths from Butterflies by simply saying Moths come into the house and fart about and Butterflies don't.

About 12 years ago I took a picture of a swallow tail butterfly on a thistle flower. didnt notice till I put the picture on my computer that you can clearly see its proboscis snaking down into the flower. best wild life photo I have ever taken.

I raise Monarch butterflies each year, and this year, they are coming back so strongly as a species after being endangered. This is a very good sign for the overall environment ❤️

Choosing a mate based on overall health is totally what humans do too. And we might gravitate toward a pretty face, but when we're actually deciding to pass on our genes I would say health is a big, if somewhat subconscious, factor.

@@andmicbro1 Just want to add that pretty faces usually mean no heavy scarring i.e. an easier upbringing, less stupid accidents, no genetic deformities in the area, etc. Pretty faces could indeed signal health as well as good genes.

Hey,! I had a pet cockroach. Found her on her back in front of my office door apparently after a hard life of insecticide abuse. American cockroach, palmetto bug. I nursed her to health. She was always excited when I came to work. She loved broccoli and bagels, tea, too. I think she lived for two more years and in the end was all gray, but got back up and died on her feet.

Sweet girl thank you for giving her bagels 🥯 and love . I have a colony of pet Dubia roaches, ik they're usually feeders but they're so darn cute to me I decided to raise some up. They're really docile and let me hold them and they freaking LOVE carrots. To roaches carrots= cocaine

I had a nightmare where swarms of vampiric butterflies started swarming people and animals and draining their blood. Mercifully, it was a dream, and also butterfly proboscises aren't strong enough to penetrate animal flesh.

Butterflies evolved from day-flying moths, and there are still day-flying moths, more colorful than their night-flying relatives. And day exposes them to more predators: birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other insects.

The Lek Paradox is interesting, but is it really that big a mystery? If sexual attraction selects for shiny hair, then shiny hair is an indicator of health rather than accident of birth.

Do human parties (especially frat parties) count as leks? If so that sorta solves the paradox in that selecting for 1 or 2 traits doesn't have to be a genetic problem but can still weed out bad genes/unhealthy individuals.

What if someone starts faking it though? As in activating gene, that pools their resources and instead of investing them into being strong and healthy butterfly, they invest it in growing big tentacles, making them overall weaker specimen, but with strong desirable trait.

I got two 'what the eff' moments out of this episode, the first from the roach (I have a roach phobia) and the second from the tentacles! Bugs are the worst! (Not really, I still love moths!)

Im at the point where the only bugs i have no problems at all with are the dragonflies. Even though they are a 100% efficient predator and would gladly eat us if the sizes were right. With the current atmospheric O2 levels that are my favorites because the are cool and eat so many pest bugs like mosquitoes in a very normal way. (Catch and munch, no weird horrific laying eggs in the victim like parasitic wasps or disolving and drinking the soup like spiders, just the classic bite your head off)

I can't say I have ever thought of the pheromone structures as tentacles. Mayhaps a writer on the team are afflicted with the phobia? To me they are more like feathers or crest. Worst case, balloon, lol. So interesting to hear a different interpretation.

I wonder if there is a way to differentiate between a phobia of moths vs butterflies. To me, moths are out at dusk or night, are attracted to lights, fly in a really erratic manner, and are more likely to be fuzzy and ugly. It all started with a horror story I was told while camping as a kid about someone who had a moth lay eggs in their ear and that some types of moths just do that all the time. Yeah, I have zero idea if this is true, but I still can't sleep if there is a moth anywhere near me.

It isn't. The English word evolved from an Old High German word that directly translated to "butter-fly", most likely in reference to the common brimstone butterfly, whose males have butter-colored wings.

But I still think butterfly faces look scary.... 🤣🤣 After watching that episode, I remembered that my mom had a jewelry box on which had a stuffed butterfly. I still like butterflies, but no creature is always so “nice and cuddly” even hamsters have a darker side But also yeah as a fan of the Kirby series I always check to watch out for certain orange butterflies because it absorbs a powerful vessel and transforms into a knight of doom kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcqlbJl70ruqYHk.html

That it for butterflies having an ugly side?...not a problem for me, there's much worse out there, and butterflies are gorgeous, even if it isn't to look good for _us_ I am now imagining a bunch of humans, and a bunch of butterflies that are done mating standing around and watching other butterflies and casually agreeing on how pretty they are...

@@mopnem Not really insanity complete metamorphosis in insects developmentally comes from the larvae being an immature embryo that has evolved to hatch and become free living early in development. The genes and tissue rearrangement in question are the same as those found in embryonic development of other animals. Given similar kinds of tissue development and rearrangement occur within the brains of young human children calling them freak shows for expressing post natal embryonic type development comes back around to us.

And if you know somebody who didn't get cured, I imagine either the timing was simply bad (too late finding the cancer or they had it before a cure was found) or else they just had such bad genetics predisposing them to cancer than nature wanted them to die. Could apply the whole mating thing to humans too. People being attracted to external factors like money or popularity when choosing a mate instead of whether or not they are actually a capable parent for their offspring.

You always have to ask yourself what the selection pressure is for the behaviour you're seeing. In a capitalist society, having less money and power directly result in worse success rates for your offspring. It effects your access to food, housing, education, spare time and energy. Does a rich business owner live in the ghetto and send their kid to community college? No, they live in a mansion and send their kid to Harvard. It's really sad that capitalism causes wealth to accumulate in the hands of those who already have it, and the rest of us get screwed over for the less and less that's available.

It's not luck or family traits. There's a reason why poor people remain poor - and it's not some sort of systemic _____________ (you fill in the blank with whatever "ism" you want). Not directed to you personally, but in general... get off your butt, put down your electronic devices, stop smoking and buying lottery tickets, get a job, work hard, spend less than you make, and invest wisely. Sorry for the rant, but we always seem to sit around and complain about the "evils of capitalism", when we could be doing things that actually help our situation instead of waiting for the government to solve our problems. I'm done!

My aunt has a phobia of butterflies. Will beat up a threatening crocodile in a heart beat. Will scream and run away if she sees a picture of butterflies. It's funny, confusing, and I feel bad because she has such a phobia.
