There used to be a term, "conspicuous consumerism" which translates as, "keeping up with the Jones's". In the 80's, the "young upwardly mobile" junior execs all raced out to buy their BMW's. They actually didn't plan on keeping them more than a year or so because they planned to trade them as soon as possible. Consider this to the younger mentality of expensive and flashy sneakers. I'm a baby boomer who grew out of poverty and had to make every penny last. Since then, I've always bought a vehicle with intentions of keeping it at least 10 years and/or 150K miles before thinking about replacing it.

Our 2013 Santa Fe gave us a lot of anxiety when the dealership said all our car needed was an engine flush and firmware update after alot of noises and tensioner replacements. They did extend the warranty by 20,000 miles which was good because the engine failed at 110000 and we got a replacement. We've had no other problems and we're gonna see how long we can keep it.

What make this so sad Mark, is our economy is starting to price millions out of new car purchases, so they are stuck flipping a coin on what out of warranty used car they can afford.
@07wrxtr1

That’s on purpose. The world economic forum doesn’t want most to own cars- but - instead be stuck living in 15 minute cities. And Don’t even think for a single moment that “everyone” will “just” have an electric vehicle Not gonna happen Most will be on foot or bike or rental
@bh2155

I don't completely agree. I believe the consumer caused the increase prices in cars and the automobile companies ran away with it. People prefer SUVs and Trucks and naturally they will cost more than a car. Then people need the heated steering wheels, expensive infotainment systems which drive the cost of cars. Just a few years ago many companies offered a variety of cheap entry level vehicles but people stopped buying them so they are gone off the market. Today everyone wants an X5, Lexus RRH350 and Ford F150s. So if people want those vehicles or any thing close to it you will have to pay for it.

I will need to replace my vehicle in a few years and I want a low prices car not an SUV in the lower 20k range. There pretty much very few options in this price range. I will have to pay 30k + for a vehicle.

I bought a 2016 Nissan rouge SL used. It had around 8000 when I bought it. I have had absolutely zero issues with it other then regular maintenance. The car has 185,000 miles and the serpentine belt just broke. Other then that I have not had to change one single part on the motor. The last vehicle I would buy right now is a cheaply built ford. They have the highest recalls of any vehicle at the moment.

And there you have it, the list of cars that the original owners knew enough to dump before the warranty was up. The question is not why to dump but when. It is also a good idea to check vehicle history when buying CPO or low mileage /one (responsible) owner cars to see what inherent gremlins have infected the vehicle. We bought a new 2007 Jaguar X-Type at such time from a Jaguar dealer and the electrical system suffered a complete failure at 14K miles. It was under warranty but we dumped that car on a trade-in while it was being repaired at Jaguar because this seemed to be a forecast of things to come. The trade was for a Lincoln T-Car, which was more reliable despite the same company ownership.

I’m the original owner of a 2010 Nissan Sentra with shy of 140k miles with absolutely no issues, except changing the oil and break pads myself. Here is the catch about my car: Since I took it out of the Nissan dealership, are you ready for this? I NEVER took it back for any free or charged maintenance!! LOL! My mental disease is that I never trust any mechanics!! The only thing that I religiously have done in the last 13 years is paying for highest price fuel (VPower) by Shell gas stations.

My 2017 Giulia has 65K miles and I've never had a problem in almost six years. Years ago I got into a big argument with a friend who swore the Alfa spec oil (that was hard to find five years ago) was "BS" because any oil of the proper weight would be fine. I said "if Alfa says use only this spec, that is the spec I will use, I don't care it costs twice as much as Supertech at Wal-Mart". I also had a 2012 Enclave for years that I gave to a young relative (still going strong at 160K miles) and when I got it my mechanic said "make sure you top off between oil changes, that GM 3.6 can stretch its chain due to low oil". He said 90% of the GM 3.6 we get in for stretched timing chain, the owner left oil in too long or didn't put enough in. So that's what I did and here it is at 160K purring like a kitty. I've learned that there are no unreliable cars, only unreliable owners.

Mark is telling the absolute truth on the Santa Fe debacle, especially the turbo sport version. Many other Hyundai/Kia engines have the same issues with fires, oil consumption, thrown rods, etc. There are literally hundreds of articles, former Hyundai/Kia techs, videos and testimonials written about the oil consumption and engine failures. And the Hyundai headquarters tell their dealerships service departments that "Using 1 quart of oil every 750 miles is a normal usage issue on an engine with 75000 plus miles on it." Even with 100% service records of every recommended Hyundai upkeep and recall that the dealership has from the first record to the last, the Hyundai commitment is delay, deny and deflect. It's a quagmire if you own one of these and experience the indifference of the Hyundai handshake.

I 💯 % disagree, I've owned 2 nissan's. Currently I have 2016 Rogue w/ 132,000 miles, bought it @ 93,000 miles. I drove from NYC to Florida 3 times, from Florida to Virginia twice, from Florida to Nevada & back to Florida, from Florida to South Carolina & back to Florida, and from Florida to Arkansas 2x & back, 🗣 NOT A SINGLE REPPAIR DONE besides routine maintenance. And that was all done this year from April to November. Can't wait to 👀 where we go Rogue next year🤔🤷🏽 I did buy new tires because i did do alot of driving but all cars & trucks need tire replacement after x amount of miles. No matter what you drive, keep up with your regular scheduled maintenance & you'll be fine.

I got a 2018 VW Jetta SE TSI Wolfsburg in February 2021 with almost 10K on it. Now 32K. Only thing I had to replace is tires last April for $435 total to pass inspection in Pennsylvania. It’s a Certified vehicle and in addition to my 35K warranty I bought a 100K warranty on it. It’s like a warranty with AAA services. I love it’s pickup on the highway merging, 38 mpg and hardly have to put foot on gas constantly as it’s aerodynamics keeps it going. Paid 14,900 for it used. Went car shopping before the pandemic officially ended so I got a deal.

Probably the worst car ever made.) I had the same car. When my wife brought it. It only had 34 thousand miles on it.. once it hit 50 thousand miles.. the transmission started to slip. We took it back to the dealership. They so called fix it… but it was very clunky once you go past 60 . Never again. We’re going back to Lexus.

I am going to say this only once .. if the car have problems but you love the look or style ... you can fix it all ! Engine ia bad ? Rebuild the engine with performance parts ... bad transmission? Replace the parts with a reinforced ones ... rust ? Brand new painting ... after 10 years is never a bad ideal , same with suspensions .... you have bilstein , Kw and many others. Do with once ... pay the price but keep what you like

When it comes to the BMW with valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets leaking, you don’t simply replace the gaskets. You have to replace the valve cover and oil filter housing because they are made of plastic and warp so resealing doesn’t work. BMW = Bring Mama’s Wallet!

No turbo charged engines, no paddle shift semi automatic transmissions, no sunroofs. I want a car that starts and moves everytime, not a premium paperweight.

I owned a certified pre owned BMW 320i xdrive. It was a 2014 model and I got it in 2017 with ~33k miles on it. I owned it for 5 years and sold it at the end of last year with 95 K miles on it. I was in school back then and was able to get in a cheap BMW.. It had the so called the infamous N20 engine I guess. Besides brake pads, tires and regular maintenance I didn't pay for any major problems. Great way to get into the brand and no regrets. At the end of the day it all depends on how you drive and take care of your car.

Me too, I had 2015 328ì, I never had any problems with engine suspension or electrical with this car, I had it for 4 years. I bought when car had 80,000 km on it, and sold it with 125,000 km. The only problem was with transfer case. It was making hesitation shaking for about 2 seconds when i was driving 60 80 kmh when ever I wanted lightly accelerate car was shaking like transmission jerking. So I decided to change the car, now I bought 2016 x3 35i, this is real beast.

I have a 2013 Subaru WRX STI that has been nothing but problems it has gone through oil like a 2 stroke since new and threw it's cam timing belt at 16k miles and the jerk dealer didn't want to cover it under warranty because I changed the oil myself which is actually illegal. During COVID it sat for 2 weeks with a dead battery. The ECM hasn't functioned well since then although possibly repaired yesterday. I pulled ECM fuse and reprogramed it and so far seems fixed?
