It would make no sense for writers to do that from a story perspective. They would just be destroying decades of lore that could otherwise be taken advantage of. The fact the Dr. Manhattan can't this doesn't really say anything about the power of Dr. Manhattan at all. It simply wouldn't be a smart way of utilizing the character of Dr. Manhattan (if you must use him at all).

When they say it "removed his intrinsic field" i think what they're talking about is removing or disabling one of two forces that keep atoms together, the electromagnetic force or the strong force. Removing even one of these would be disastrous.

Wally said Metron is even more powerful than Darkseid and Manhattan literally one-shotted him. He killed the *immortal* Pandora. He created basically a Universe. Created the New 52 timeline. Created oxygen on Mars. He is potentially Omniscient, -be a genius- He was pretty overrated until that feats come. Done.

Wonderful video! I had previously been considering Manhatten barely universal, but this video has really changed my position on the matter. As for the video on "DC's most underrated characters" - I'd really like to see that, even if only to see if I even recognize anyone in it. In addition, a video that I'd really like to see would be a video on the various different reboots of DC - Crisis on Infinite Earths, Zero Hour, Flashpoint (N52), Rebirth, etc. You've been really good at explaining things that I previously had difficulty understanding, so it would really be useful for me, given how I've recently been reading some Tim Drake stories and have gotten confused as to how Titans Tomorrow Tim came back, how Impulse remembers things, and how Conner got back. Basically I just like Young Justice and a whole "Crisis" video seemed like the least direct way to ask for information on them. /ramble over Anyways, awesome video, and I hope to see more like it!

when Dr. M said "scraps of creation" I assumed he meant the totality of creation as in the impetus of the DC multiverse. it could be said that if the multiverse was represented as an estate with the main mansion and various side houses/cottages the shadowlands would be the Storeroom/warehouse in the shadow of those forefront buildings housing what has to be hidden, the perceived unwanted and unneeded, I say this because of the interactions between wonder woman and the upside-down man. could have just been a faux pas though

Let's take into account that Manhattan is a product of Super Science, an analytical intelligence who spends his existence dissecting things and comes to conclusions based well on the scientific process, so he's going to come to some bullshit conclusion to deconstruct magic. Cause if you don't believe in magic, your gonna end up with no magic.

He did use the Magic's energy against the more well verses and endowed practitioners in DC I would say he manipulates platonic/primordial energies.

So, once a group of friends and I were playing this game called Superfight, (Basically, two people pick a character card from their hand and attach modifiers like "there's ten of them" or "is 50 feet tall", and each person makes their argument why their guy would win in a fight with the other one, doing their best to sway the rest of the players who ultimately decide the winner. overselling stuff/downplaying the other character is encouraged, you DO EVERYTHING you can to sway the masses.) With that context established, my friend had a card that said "pick any comic book character" and he chose Dr. Manhattan. I went with Mr. Rogers, AND I WON! (I convinced the table that Mr. Rogers would kindness him into submission, and also pointed out that Mr. Rogers was the victor of the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny.) I didn't really think Mr. Rogers would beat him, given the whole "lost humanity" thing, but that's how you play the game. My friend is still salty, and honestly rightfully so.

He could. But Dr Manhattan isnt like that. You cant fight Dr Manhattan through sheer force. Hes just too powerful. But you can change his mind or logically maneuver him. He's not all knowing (but pretty close) or all-powerful (well pretty close) Hes just bored. He wants to make things better with his power, but people have free will and the sad truth is that shitty people will always make shitty choices. Making things better will never be permanent because there will always be unbalanced/evil people who want to take what isnt theirs or do what they want to others. Superman represents the constant will to make things better by constantly fighting whats wrong. Thats why hes a boy scout hero. Hes the ideal/hope that humanity strives to be better. Dr Manhattan doesnt inspire or give people a hope. Hes just a being with so much knowledge and power that he doesnt really care

3:54 I didn't read Before Watchmen, but this sounds like a *really* bad retcon. Dr. Manhattan was originally omniscient and omnipotent but also part of a pre-determined universe. This made Dr. Manhattan paradoxical and incomprehensible in an interesting way. The retcon, as I understand it from this video, tosses out the ambiguity and replaces it with mere technobabble about Dr. Manhattan "choosing to give up free will" to avoid "destabilizing the universe". This makes Dr. Manhattan just a guy with superpowers and some hand-waving about their limits.

Manhattan was absolutely never even remotely portrayed as omniscient or omnipotent (I literally have no idea how you could possibly see him as omnipotent). He is a relatively powerful but incredibly flawed individual with limited prescience who is losing touch with his humanity and morals because he doesn't view the world as a human anymore. A huge part of his character is this fatalistic mindset that he can't change things but in the original Watchmen this is never once explained a single time. It actually gets contradicted a bunch of times. Before Watchmen fixes all of the inconsistencies and actually gives him character development by explaining why he has this fatalistic personality at all as well as giving him an incredibly profound and meaningful choice to make. Either give up on free will or live in a jumble of infinite indeterminate alternate and unstable realities. It ends on this extremely powerful fatalistic situation where despite all his power Manhattan has lost the power to choose, perfectly explaining his character throughout watchmen. Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan is a stunningly well written comic series that honestly does a far better job at developing his character than anything in Watchmen or Doomsday clock did.

@@WebCamParrot It's been some years since I last read Watchmen, so maybe I'm filling in blanks in my recollection with head canon, but my read on his fatalism wasn't that it was an inexplicable flaw, but rather a genuinely accurate understanding of how the Watchmen universe works. My read on the apparent inconsistencies and limits to his power (tachyons, openness to persuasion) was that it's simply necessary to maintain some ambiguity and also to take some narrative slack around a character like Dr. Manhattan in order to tell a story and because certain questions about him shouldn't/can't be answered without changing the nature of the story. For example, "Are Dr. Manhattan's human qualities due to some genuine lingering humanity or is this just his pre-destined behavior merely simulating human emotions? Is there even a difference?" Perhaps "retcon" was too strong a word since it might not be a direct contradiction, but it sounds like a fairly different direction.

I personally think he's still learning the extent of his powers, like it something brought him to the place of the monitors, 4,5th dimension or the overviod knowledge of his ability would continue to expand as would his feats. Being in the original watchmen comic he would have no point being outerversal but I think if he's placed in those kind of environments he would be able to adjust quite nicely.

Good video, I love the overpowered dead-pan blue man. Although, I do have to ask: Are there really people out there who take Dr. Manhattan's "scraps of creation" Statement seriously? I mean, the entire Doomsday Clock story-line is basically him learning about the multiverse, so he wouldn't know anything about the origins of magic in DC. Are there people who really think it's official just because John said so?

So Dr. Manhattan didn't know why his knowledge of the future just goes away at a certain point, even though he should have been aware of everything, including his conversation with Superman, and him thereafter ceasing to see the future resulting from his own intentional actions? Unless tachyons are involved, that makes no sense whatsoever. He shouldn't have been confused about any of that, he would have just seen it as inevitable as anything else.

Because of Sciences real life effect in our Real World, you could say the only leg up Science has over magic and imagination lies only in it's Ability to demystify the observable universe leaving only data, facts, empirical evidence, yada yada while Magic, it's all putting faith, belief, willpower, and a willingness to accept the unacceptable and the unexplained, the mysterious, and making all that physical reality. I see it like this: Science is what lets us understand the universe, and potentially even beyond. To master all of science is comparable to a kind of omniscience. And that’s what you and I can achieve in the real world. For those who can directly manipulate and interact with science on a conceptual level, beings like Dr Manhattan, they essentially become the architect of reality itself. There are limits to its scope due to the metaphysical nature of some kinds of realities but it’s nigh infinite power in and of itself. Magic by nature is that which is beyond science, in turn, science gains and understanding of it, creating a cycle of accepted reality vs that which defies it. Unless you assume there is a finite limit to the amount of information then this process never ends. Meaning that magic will always be beyond science but science is always right behind it. A powerful magic user doesn’t need to manipulate reality, they bypass reality entirely. They don’t obey the fundamental laws that chain even beings like manhattan(even if we haven’t see those limits yet they do exist, by nature of science itself) they can distort reality to extents even science couldn’t. Magic Vs Science doesn’t have an objective winner, because it entirely depends on scale. Dr Manhattan has such a complete understanding of creation that even Zatannas magic is nothing to him because he understands the way it alters reality, giving him greater control of reality. Even Manhattan doesn’t actually understand magic. To him, it’s all science. He’s such an aware being that I’m not aware of any purely magical beings that can beat him. I’m not saying there aren’t but I’m more of a 40k guy, not a dc guy so I don’t know enough about the comics to give any examples. But if there is any power, any process, literally anything beyond Manhattans understanding, THAT is the magic that beats him. Anything less can never equal him.

There are still characters like darkseid that literally embody concepts wich should honestly be far more complex than any normal magic or science... Also the presence exists because of faith and belief too who is far stronger than most characters too.

But beyond that it is still somewhat hard to think of magical characters that are far stronger, I think the top tiers of umineko when they cry are much stronger and magical for example.

I wouldn't say that tachyons "travel backwards in time". No idea why Manhattan would say that, either. Tachyons are hypothetical particles that travel faster than the speed of light, and are unable to travel slower than it. Due to relativity and causality this would result in a form of time-travel, but not in the way he's phrasing it. Also, if he can reconstitute himself any way he pleases, why is he blue? Is that just his favourite colour?

My interpretation. While Superman; standing there is the present about to fight Black Adam and the other villain, ManHattan reported, he faded to black and went back in time and fixed everything “he” changed then boom!, the JSA and others erased come in “the present’ and help Superman face does. The reality was still there. No reality warp or erase of the present universe. Right there on page. That’s what I deciphered. Awareness of him was not erased for Superman on new allies to appear do them being altered from the past. Then he gave his life force to save his planet; a planet not universe. Then he gave his remaining power to a kid he named Clark. Page for page. People only want to imagine that when the page went black that he universally erased the present time like he’s god or something. People only imagine that he saved his “universe” when it wasn’t a universe drawn or written right there on the page but a “planet”. Either way, I love your vids man. Loved when you went off on tangent on the story f Superman. Trust me, I have been in these debates (well not debates for me but facts) and it’s ultimately what I have said in these events. It’s like the world we live in today. Things can exist together in an infinite universe. More space than matter. Everything can exist peacefully. You like Fruity pebbles fine, I like Captain berry crunch. You like Thor, ManHattan, Goku, Hulk, or Thanos, cool, I don’t. I’m older. I grew up on Superman so that’s my character. I still like those guys respectively in there on continuity and universe but my fave is Supes. I don’t watch DBZ for Superman. I watch it for Goku and the rest of the cast. It’s it’s on story! Why compare? Yet and still, men lie, women lie, numbers don’t, Superman a the oldest out the bunch therefore his feats or abundant when comparing. Always the point I try to make in these Superman defamation vids or forums. He the reason the term op exist. To me, there nothing wrong with the human imagination imagining defying the impossible. Little known facts ; had a small run as a popstar , in his band Eiffel65. Also a performance artist he created the perfect theater group which allowed him to live in the middle of the spotlights with no one noticing . (Blue man Group) And can you spot him doing a movie cameo ? (Smurfs 2) And some rumours even claim he did some blue movies .....
