As a way to use up all that extra mint popping up everywhere, I am making mint herbal vinegar for a cooling summer hair rinse. It smells so minty! And is a pretty pink/ purple color.

I have a spot where it grows out and we mow over it. We have plenty elsewhere! When you mow over it, the fragrance of the air makes the whole chore of mowing worth it!

I have picked up most of my supplies in estate sales and thrifts. Good thing you are warning folks to grow mint in containers. My neighbor planted mint in the ground and it has taken over his yard. I know better. Mama told me that 50 years ago. Comfrey too will take over. Mine is in a container and is doing well.

I have an abundance of MINT AND LED N BALM. I cut the stems leave and all. I wrapped them around my Zucchini and Squashes stems. It helped with Squash vines Burrow. Plus it put nutrients into the ground.. We are in the Mid South oh of America. We have so ma issues. Mint and herbs are a great thing here.

I learned that lesson about mint a few years ago it was spreading so quickly, it took a couple of years to finally get rid of it. So now it grows in containers and does so well. I have even bought it in during the winter and have it growing most of the year but it still goes dormant for a few weeks before sprouting again in the spring. Thanks for the videos,so helpful

You should try to work with harvest right to come up with some sort of screen to place over the top of the more delicate herbs a petals so they don't blow everywhere. I love watching your channel and learning about the different herbs. Thank you

I have gone down a rabbit hole on a weight loss journey for the last couple weeks but I missed you guys so much that I'm right back but I have some catching up to do. I wish I had a freeze dryer but can't afford it right now. It's on "my bucket list". My health food journey hasn't been real long but Oh, the changes I have felt over the last few months! Love it! Yes, sublimation is when a substance (in this case water) goes from solid to gas skipping the liquid form. Freezing these herbs to under -120 degrees F in your freeze dryer and under strong vacuum will dry them using sublimation. Keeping all the goodness inside! ❤😊

I just happened upon your channel and am really excited....LOL...yes...I too learned about "mints", and a couple of other herbs that seem to spread on their own terms. I love that you have turned your passion into a great, helpful business too... I admire that! It's my understanding (after researching how different herbs, etc. were preserved to a dry form), that natural drying actually depletes VERY FEW nutrients or medicinal properties .... I understand that a "selling point" for freeze dryers is used on some of the freeze-drying manufacturers' websites, and on websites that sell freeze-dried foods which, for some foods may be the way to go...but to completely accept this information is probably not a good idea. Freeze dryers are extremely expensive. A lot of us would love to have even a small one, but can't afford the huge price!,. They are much quicker than dehydrating! (By the way, sublimation,(in physics), is the conversion of something from a solid to a gaseous state without its becoming liquid. An example of this would be the vaporization of frozen carbon dioxide [dry ice] at ordinary atmospheric pressure and temperature. This happens as the result of vapor pressure and temperature relationships. "Freeze-drying" of food, [in order to preserve it] involves sublimation of water from the food in a frozen state under a high vacuum.) Here's the thing. Canning and natural dehydration have been successfully used for a very long time for preserving foods and herbs, all over the world, to help sustain people over harsh winters. Drying and using plants and herbs for food and medicinal purposes have worked well for thousands of years. Like a lot of things created and sold to us now, these inventions create a form of dependency. If we lose electrical or gas energy, and need to use "pump gas" to run a generator, or have solar power (which can be expensive to have installed, and at times is dependent upon weather conditions, and for some, a need for a generator to use in order to direct the energy harvested to the house. This poses, yet another challenge. Common sense would dictate that apparently in the past, (centuries...or even millennia), when there were no electric freeze dryers and electric dehydrators, the simple air drying of medicinal herbs, flowers, and edible plants, worked great, and did very little to keep their medicinal properties from successfully working, healing hundreds of thousands of people with various medical complaints in the past, from the Far East to North America.

I have that same problem with lemon balm. I’m very thankful to keep it contained to a certain area.

I love Mints. My regular Mint plant is about 5 years old. I planted it on the side of the house. Everyone warned me it spreads. My does not, but I wish it would. In pots, I grow Spearmint, Peppermint, Chocolate Mint, Pineapple Mint, Apple Mint, Orange Mint, and Mojo Mint. I love Mint tea.

it's so funny that you put this video out now because my old garden was taken over by mint, i had to start a completely new garden this year in a new spot, and i was thinking of going out to harvest and dry some of the mint next weekend. the same thing happened with the wild rose video, i had JUST found wild rose on my property a couple days before and was doing some research on what i could do with it when that video came out. it's like you're reading my mind lol

I started growing strawberry mint and apple mint along with all my others a couple years ago. I love the smell of the strawberry. The only one I think I haven't grown is Wintergreen. That's my next. I love the mints but I keep them all in very large planters to keep them from spreading.

When I had a parrot, I would give her the stems from my dried plants. She absolutely loved them.

I have seen people use stainless steel wire mesh over those explosive herbs to help hold them in place while freeze drying.

Yep, every time you compare dehydrated to freeze dried I get a tingle in my gut about saving $ to buy one. I told my husband that I’ve even figured out where we’ll put it. 😂 Did the scent of the mint fill the room when the freeze drier was on? My dehydrator does so I have it in a central room to scent my first floor of my home.

I love mint. My mint and spearmint came from my mother. She loved her garden. My most favourite is lemon balm or is it lemon verbena? Oh wait is probably lemon thyme? No wait it’s Thai basil. I have lots of different types of mint in containers, but I also have some that have volunteered themselves from just throwing the stems in areas that I don't care if it takes over..lol. When I harvest from there I call it Muddle Mint!

I freeze dried mint last week leaving it on the stem. After dried the leaves came off easily. I LOVE the result, enjoy!

Thank you for naming those baskets! I had one, did not know what it's use was. It made a fabulous bird feeder for whole peanuts. A basket like that would be super easy to crochet. The difficult part would be adding a stiff handle.

I don't know if you grow garlic but,garlic is very good for you if you have congestion or a very bad cold,flu,immune booster and then some more..I use it daily if I need it for my bronchitis sometimes when it gets bad and it works very good..

We have an entire front yard of mint. We kept round patches of it and pulled the rest. We put heavy duty weed barrier down, edged the mint beds with brick and put a few inches of river rock down. We get a few sprigs growing through, but they’re easy to pull and the root always comes up. We’ve found it’s an easy way to grow mint that always comes back. We only harvest by the leaf and cut the sprigs down to the ground after we harvest fully in fall. Up until then we harvest by the leaf as needed.

I find great value in growing my own herbs on my balcony. I love your baskets. I'm going to look for that kind of basket at my thrift store. I harvested my dill and dried it in my six tier drying rack. I just packed the dill in a small bottle. It's drying season I'm having fun 😊.

My apple and pineapple mint crossed. It is fuzzy so i can tell the difference between it and regular mint. I did the same and planted it in the ground. Smells great when we walk around and mow. I dont mind it.

I'm curious if freeze drying changes the dosing of these medicinal herbs? given the process appears to better preserve the potency of the end product and it's longevity. Most recipes I use are based on traditional hang drying methods. It's definitely on the bucket list!

Sublimation IS freeze and drying. It takes the water in a substance or item (mint), turns it to ice, then turns it to a water vapor. Sublimation is turning a solid into a gas. :)

I've been in just about everything with muck boots. Including pajamas. It's farm life.

You mentioned perfect imperfection - just a tidbit I read somewhere that a study was done where people were shown pictures of human faces and data was gathered as to which were considered most attractive to the participants of the study. The pictures were shown as they are in real life, but then also a version where the faces had been altered to be exactly symmetrical digitally. The natural faces (with imperfect symmetry) were all deemed more attractive than the digitally enhanced/generated perfect symmetry. So, by that finding, we humans find beauty with imperfections and less attracted to "perfection". I know I am one who loves learning right alongside your videos with any "mistakes" or messes - it is a snapshot of real life. BTW - I grew chocolate mint, also, and realized the biggest difference in appearance with it over the peppermint was the purpling along the stem and undersides of the leaves, sometimes extending to the leaf margins and veining. After a few years, though, most of the mint had become more homogenous-looking, so it either crossbred and created something unique or one mint overtook the somewhat smaller chocolate mint because there was no purpling of any of our mint patches after a while.

So beautiful! As a science teacher, sublimation is when something goes straight from solid to gas, skipping the liquid phase. Think dry ice. Can't wait to see the comparison, but I am not on IG. Can you share the picture here, too?

Question: would the color of the glass jar have an effect on what is retained? Like additional protection against daylight which would weaken the efficacy of the mint. Like the old apathacary jars that were dark amber color or blue.

Maybe you should use the freeze dried peppermint stems for tincturing.
