The Story of Tissa Thera
Dhammapada Verse 126
In this Dhammapada verse, we learn about a jeweler who beat an innocent arahant monk. The Buddha used this story to explain the different types of ways we are reborn.
Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.
Check out the playlist #AnimatedBuddhistStories by Wat San Fran to explore the complete series.

Thank you so much, Watsanfran! To be honest, this story strikes great fear in my heart. The jeweler (presumably) spent countless hours in front of the Thera, giving food to the Thera, and (presumably) the jeweler listened to the Dhamma from the Thera. And yet, in a moment of deep blindness and profound ignorance (avidya), the jeweler committed a heinous act of paapa karma, sending him to be reborn in niraya hell. Even when the jeweler realized his atrocity and repented of his acts, the karmic debt of his actions had to be paid. Who is to say that any of us can fall so miserably like the jeweler, in a rash moment of weakness? May we all guard our minds from falling into such evil by taking refuge in the Tri-Ratna of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. May we strive every minute of every day toward Nibbana. As a person clings onto a raft tossed about by the turbulent waters of a raging flood, so too may we all cling onto the teachings of all the Buddhas as we pass through this ocean of samsara. ❤🙏

🎙️First of all, a great respect for the wife of a jeweler, the most wise one who was able to appropriately predict the consequences to be encountered in future. Fear, if not processed, can not only lose life but also can take an innocent life, miserably. This is the nature of an untrained/ impure mind. And fear is bound to rule an impure mind. Felt immense pain while watching the Arahant enduring so much pain but again, his past life karmic transaction with jeweler was also necessary to dissolve to attain Nibbana. May all beings be mindful of doing heavy karmas to prevent themselves from getting the undesirable rebirths. One of the most heart touching and eye opener Jataka tale. Abundance of gratitude to the watsanfran team.✍️

🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 In gratitude for the making of this. I learnt that we have to be very careful re assumptions we make about others as we don’t see the full picture and especially concerning the wise.

The evil had been committed, and as per the law of karma, one must bear the consequences. Its not about the monk forgiving him or not.
