Very proud to be a part of this 🌟 Finding all sorts of game builds and many other things from the entire internet (I mean entire-entire) over the past five years has been a very long and interesting story, but it was definitely worth it. Glad you could make a two-hour video on the material I provided! (Funny thing, but the video was originally scheduled to be released on May 18, 2022 (a decade since the start of the public alpha), then was postponed to April 23, 2023 (a decade since the game's release), and has only come out now)

I mean yeah. Making an ideal F2P game in every way except the predatory monetization is exactly how Vampire Survivors accidentally became one of the best and most successful indie games ever made. Turns out all the psychological tricks devs use to clean people's wallets out are also a lot of what makes games work well as games.

I feel a weird sense of pride knowing that my suggestion, that Wilson's beard provide warmth in the winter, was taken and added. It's such a small thing compared to everyone else's suggestions but I literally just threw it out there because its cute, and just... made respect to Klei you know? They didn't have to do that, no one would have cared. It's insane being such an old player and seeing what the game has become. I used to be able to survive like 300 days, now I'm lucky if I survive 20. Wild.

There's something poetic about the very last DLC for Don't Starve ending up being a proper realization of what the game initially started as. It's like the game has come full circle as it finally passes on the torch to its multiplayer counterpart.

I actually like the story behind the idea of these major bosses being added into multiplayer with the intention of being fought with multiple people but because of pure human injenuity and creativity (or just cheesing the fuck out of everything) we were essentially able to bypass whatever conditions they made over and over, it just comes to show how adaptable humans really are

I remember how challenging the game was when I first started to play it back in the All's Well That Maxwell update. I remember one of my favorite mods was a Hatsune Miku one where she was given a gun with craftable ammo as well as some kind of slowing ammo, but the slowing ammo would crash the game all the time when you tried to use it. She also spawned in with a glowing green leek which dealt very little damage but gave you a small ring of infinite light like Willow's lighter. The gun ammo was actually pretty expensive to craft and dealt the same damage as a blow dart so all in all it was a fairly balanced recipe since you needed rotten eggs to make gunpowder and the rotten eggs were always a pain for me to get. I either had to wait for pengull's to spawn in winter and then let them despawn naturally to leave their eggs behind, or sacrifice a bunch of good meat to a bird to get eggs and then let them rot over time. I actually probably had a harder time playing the modded character than anything by default since, while the light and the gun was great, her stats were basic at best and had no other upside. I think she also dealt less damage like Wendy but I can't really remember that much. All I do remember is that it was my go-to character for the majority of my singleplayer life until I got wind of DST and started to watch content related to it. I actually only ever managed to get it after the end of the first Forge event which I just barely missed by like a week. After that I played the game off and on again from then until now where I'm currently in a "I don't feel like doing anything" sort of mood. I also like how they tried to nerf Willow to make her seem less like a default griefer character but it did literally nothing to change the stigma attached to her by that point. As a matter of fact, even though most people I see run public servers with 6 player slots, they still automatically kick anyone they don't know immediately. So fast to the point where I log in and wait for the loading screen, and then once I spend 5 minutes waiting for the screen to go away I get the 'You have been disconnected' or 'You have been banned' message. I love how people make public servers just to deny anyone from getting in like....just make a password you troglodyte. Stop being an asshole and insta-banning anyone and everyone who you don't want to play with and just password protect your world, it's literally as simple as just typing a single character into the field. The chances of someone brute forcing the password which can be a random number of characters and any random combination of them is slim to none and would be almost impossible. Aside from that, the game is a blast to play with friends and good people. I joined a server in the recent months and ended up playing with a group, regularly, with some fun mods, for over 3000 days before the server got refreshed for the update and some mod fixes (since it was common for mod incompatibility messages to appear even though everything was up to date between players and server.) Aside from that it was a really good time and we had a lot of fun. Also, unpopular opinion, but I think that the Palmcone trees are better than the lunar trees. They're easier to plant and take care of, provide the same if not more logs when you dig up their stumps and stuff, and any unused palmcone scales can act as a single log for fuel on the fire, meaning you can turn all your other logs into armor or planks and use the cone scales exclusively for fuel. Their only downside is they don't duplicate themselves with multiple saplings and only drop one to renew the cycle, meaning you have a definitive amount unless you camp the unnatural portal for a few days to get more sprouts. Aside from that I think they're far superior. They also don't spawn treeguards much like the lunar trees because there's no treeguard variant for them....yet.

The comparison between the developers and player testers to Maxwell and Wilson is so comical. A constantly changing battle to make the player not have it too easy was really cool to see in this video. Another well done "history of" video. tbh I can't tell whether or not it's a coincidence or if the devs adapted the lore/characters so Maxwell and Wilson work like they do with the player base but both are hilarious.

I feel the addition of the tips and in game notes are not really making the game “easier.” Since the original dont starve released, the game has only gotten more and more complex. As a new player many years ago you only had to keep track of a few things. Now there is so many complex bosses, item interactions, and threats, that it would be very difficult for any new player in dst to hope to keep track of it. I’d say the accessibility they have added in dst counteract the insane amount of complexity, balancing out the difficulty. I like to think of the relaxed mode as an alternative mode, moreso like practice for actual survival.

Same, but i'm currently 18. Don't Starve has been a major part of my life. I first remember knowing about Don't Starve in 2013, by a Brazilian channel named "Cê Joga?" (The channel is still alive but apparently something happened with the creator and he stopped posting years ago.) As a Brazilian kid at the time, i didn't knew about Steam, so in order to play i found those virus sites and downloaded a Pirated Russian version of the game, it was so bad, the right part of the HUD was black and you couldn't see some of the status or days. I was so fascinated by the game that i made a cover for the school book featuring Wilson. (I sadly don't have it anymore.) In 2016 i downloaded Steam and bought both Don't Starve Together and Don't Starve. I don't know, i just wanted to write my experience with Don't Starve, because it's a game that basically developed my interest for games in general, and i feel like i had to share that memory with others who probably had the same experience with Don't Starve

I actually love the idea of adding vast new spaces like the ocean and caves. Minecraft faced a similar issue. When the nether was introduced, it was bland and there wasn't much to do. Over time though, we can't imagine a minecraft without the nether. It's been updated and has made the game so much more fun. I feel the same way about the caves and oceans.

The point about Intrinsic vs Extrinsic rewards honestly reminds me of modern Minecraft. Current Minecraft is all about progression, get your Netherite Armor, get your mending enchantments, kill the Ender Dragon, get your elytra, and then stop playing because you "did everything," when people are asked what they want from updates they say "more progression."

The Brightshades need a tweek or two. The fact I have to battle the suckers, every other day, when I actually want to just chill in my base and do some chores, is a real pain in the neck. Not helped in the least by the fact that the 'shades come in 3's, deal a ton of damage, and aren't all that squishy either. And worst of all - once the rift is open, you can't really close it, unless you exit the game and use world settings to remove it temporarily. Basically - keep the stuff in, just either reduce the frequency of the brightshades, or make them less of a pain to deal with.

"You can attack the player and its fair game, but you steal their stuff *sucks in through teeth*" well yeah, if I was in the wilderness trying not to starve to death and some guy just showed up and started stealing my shit, I'd be pretty goddamn pissed. Edit: I might get flack for this, but I kinda think removing Warbucks was a bit of a mistake. It feels weird that all it took to remove a whole character that was once playable was a few bad perks and some non-troversy. If Klei just edited his speech to be less ""offensive"" and gave him better quirks he could have really fit in with the ruins exploration theme Hamlet had. I know Wheeler technically took the niche Warbucks originally had, but I still think he could have worked. And if people did end up getting royally pissed at him staying past the beta, then chances are those people probably weren't fans of DS and were just offended to be offended. Also he had a gun, like an actual gun, and I'm lowkey mad that we couldn't just go full Grandpa Harley and shoot monsters with a blunderbuss.

Don’t starve is a game that I hold very dear to my heart. I have over 2000 hours of memories and friends I’ve made that I’ll never forget. I don’t think I’ve ever met a team of developers and community that cared more about their game. It’s sad to see that Don’t Starve Together has strayed away from the core elements of the game but it’s also bittersweet to see how well the community has flourished over the years. Most of my hours from DST come from the time when everyone was saying it was dying because of the forge and gorge events and the lack of focus on the actual game but really it is nice being in a community that cares so much about such a unique game with so much personality.
@VG-fk6nk
@VG-fk6nk Жыл бұрын
DST has strayed from the core elements? How so? Because if anything, if DS is the core element, then DST is a colossal improvement on the core element, in practically every way. The only place it falls short is from not having "Shipwrecked and Hamlet", but like... those 2 "DLC's" are practically separate games. Goes to show how passionate Klei are... As for the playerbase dying - I don't know. I need to see the stats, but I wouldn't be surprised. This game is what, 10 years old now? Not a lot of games can boast being active for 10 years, so it's an achievement for sure. It's natural that eventually, people will move on. But hey, part of life. Cherish what we have for now. Bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter.

i really like the direction DST is going in. adding more challenges and end game content, keeping things challenging and fun, but also making an effort to be palatable to newer players. if you've tried to get friends into the game before, you already know just how tough it can be to get new players to really enjoy the game for what it is. in my opinion, that's been the enemy of DST for the longest time now. they sit at base constantly, scared of doing new things and exploring, only to then get bored and give up playing. and you can't really blame them. stuff like offering an optional "easy mode", or giving the players a scrapbook to fill up to learn things about the game, will certainly make it a lot easier for newcomers. also not to mention how the scrapbook is gonna make it so new players aren't constantly pausing the game to check the wiki.

I love this video, I joined during "The return of them" arc and seeing the new update adding stuff that's not optional feels so weird lol. 2:04:08 Also I saw this like a month ago in a short, it made me so mad to see a LOT of people not know Deerclops is from DST and asking why the game copied a terraria boss, the same way half of TF2 players don't know the Hambat is also from DST.
