Jeremy Brett gave his portrayal of Holmes something no one else did before or since - a quickness of movement, a sharpness of speech, a single-minded focus on the question; he was beyond brilliant in the role - he WAS Sherlock Holmes.

These two men portray Holmes and Watson perfectly. Their relationship is perfect for me. Holmes is brilliant but quirky, his use of opiates and cocaine is no big deal. Watson is mature and an excellent partner for Holmes. He is not a dumbo clown such as earlier portrayals nor a ninja smart ass as more recent portrayals. No other portrayals of either comes close to their cinematic adventures of the deeds of Sherlock Holmes faithfully recounted by Dr. Watson, his friend and colleague. I’m so grateful to be able to watch these for free. The people acting the other parts are also great such as the local constable.

I know the actor that played Abe Slaney. Eugene Lipinski is his name. He's of Polish ancestry but was born in England. He has lived in Canada for many years though, and as far as I know, he is still here. I studied acting for a year about 10 years ago and he was my teacher for Improv, Movement, and Voice Training. Here he is much younger, than when I knew him. He's actually a very smart, interesting person, and quite personable.

When I saw this episode I chuckled when Abe Slaney came riding in looking like a cowboy with a big 10-gallon hat. I'm glad Granada did that for in the original Sydney Paget illustrations of the story that's exactly how Slaney looked - a Brit's version of an American criminal. Bravo Granada for those kind of authentic touches.

My dad gave me the entire Sherlock Holmes works of A.C.Doyle for my eighteenth birthday, and Sherlock has always been my detective of choice. Indeed, following his example, (and episodes of Dragnet and Adam 12), I became a police detective and actually employed many of Doyle's' concepts in my very successful career. Jeremy Brett is the personification of Mr Holmes and whoever put the sets together, (especially 221b Baker Street), was spot on! Many thanks for posting these excellent works...

I'm now 67. I used to love this series when I first watched them back in the 80s. But now on second viewing I have neither patience nor love for it and find the whole Sherlock Holmes business nothing but a soporific. Jeremy Brett was really the only reason ever to watch, who gave some life to otherwise moribund stories. My past fondness for the series was really only a fondness for the actor, much as it was my fondness for Basil Rathbone who first incarnated Sherlock Holmes so very long ago. Very sadly I read the following: "Basil Rathbone is synonymous with Sherlock Holmes. He played the Victorian sleuth in the fourteen Fox/Universal films of the 1930s and ’40s, as well as on stage and radio. For many people, he is the Holmes.Basil Rathbone grew to hate Sherlock Holmes. The character placed restrictions on his career: before Holmes he was an esteemed theatre actor, appearing in Broadway plays such as The Captive and The Swan, the latter of which became his launchpad to greater stardom. But he never, ever escaped his most famous role.Basil Rathbone was not Sherlock Holmes. In The Curse of Sherlock Holmes, celebrated biographer David Clayton looks at the behind-the-camera life of a remarkable man who deserved so much more than to be relegated to just one role."
