Well, OK, not anywhere-anywhere, but the Wilderness will get you closer to Moab than almost anything else in the small SUV segment. If you want more capability you'll find it in the Bronco Sport and to a lesser extent the Compass, but you'll be paying significantly more for them than the $31,995 Crosstrek Wilderness. Even if you add all the options, this Subie has some serious value going on. On the other hand, if you want "premium" options, you'll notice plenty are missing thanks to the baby Wilderness' low price tag...

I am almost 450 miles in on my Crosstrek Wilderness and the only issue I had so far was a slight buzzing/vibration from the front passenger door speaker on the Harmon Kardon audio system. It's only on certain long drawn out bass notes and only from that speaker. I am taking it in Friday for two accessories to be installed, which did not arrive on time. I will mention the speaker to them then. Other than that, the seats are super comfortable, it handles amazing, I never feel like I am missing power (I turned in a 310+ hp pickup for this), viability is amazing, it has a very small/tight turning radius, audio sounds great except for the occasional annoying buzzing. As far as fuel economy goes, I am seeing ~ 30 mpg in mixed driving so far.

I am interested in how the reliability of the Crosstrek will hold up. It has exceptional reliability now according to Consumer Reports, but previously it was built in Japan. They are, strangely IMO, moving production of the 2.5L models to the US. Have to wonder if the reliability will hold up. I would have thought they would keep making the higher trim models in Japan.

I have a Forester Wilderness and here are some of the differences between the two. Unlike the CW, the FW has a full-size spare with a TPMS sensor, so you can do five tire rotations if you desire. But more importantly, you want a full-size spare for those drives in the back country. The FW has a front camera, so you can see those obstacles in front of you. It's also handy for parking and negates the CW's smaller size advantage, making FW parking easier and safer. The FW has A/C vents for the rear passengers and canine companions. The FW has a standard panoramic moonroof vs the smaller optional one on the CW. The FW has auto vehicle hold while the CW doesn't. Factory option group on the FW gives you navigation, HK audio and a power lift gate. Factory option group on the CW gives you power moonroof (standard on FW), power driver's seat (standard on FW) and HK audio. Navigation and power liftgate are not available on the CW. Numerous POE options are available on both models. The important ones for me are the auto dimming rearview mirror with Homelink and the exterior auto dimming rearview mirrors.

@@layne4376I wouldn't take any Subaru deep off road. That's what Jeeps a re for. As for the spare tire. my wife ruined one of my tires and i had to run on the spare for several weeks. Look at any donut tire and it will tell you to not use except to get to a place where the flat tire can be fixed. So I would have had to park my FW for several days weeks or I'd have had to run it on the donut for several weeks. With a full-size spare I was able to operate normally.

@@AlaskaErik CW does have navigation as an option. Comes with the package that includes the moonroof, elec seats and HK speakers. I actually elected to buy the CW over the FW this week. I love my Forester but Ive been wanting the smaller size of the Cross lately. As for the deep offroad? Youre totally right! Jeeps, Dirt Bikes, and Side by Sides! My Subarus are only there for road trips, haulin small cargo, and getting to the trailhead (which is often mildly off-road) The only downside I see moving from my FW to the CW is the front camera. I never really used or needed one but its really nice to have regardless and I wish that was an option!

@@SuperSneakySniper Then the official Subaru website has it wrong. According to it navigation is only available as an option on the Limited trim. Alex, I know the rear center seat belt on the Crosstrek and Impreza are one of your peeves but do consider that these cars are relatively small and it is unlikely that people will be traveling with 5 persons aboard. Because of that the center belt can be unlatched and stowed in the the rear holder. That way it won’t obstruct cargo or be in the way with the seats folded. I never have had 5 aboard my Impreza so I just keep the center belt unhooked.

Great coverage as usual Alex. Thank you! Now, I'm deeply disappointed with the decision of massively downgrading the interior of all Crosstreks. Black plastic door handles on all trims? Geez! So much hard plastics and gray interiors. It makes it look like cheap, popular cars with 1.0 liter engines from Brazil. The left elbow padding on the driver's door is almost non-existent. The hard plastics on the rear passengers' doors is also a major downgrade from my 2016 Subaru Crosstrek Premium which had much better interiors all around. I like the idea of dark top above driver and passengers heads. The light top does indeed get dirty very quickly after loading mountain bikes and other things in the cabin. My 16 cost me $23,400 out the door brand new with the moon roof. There prices and downgraded interiors are a massive let down. I'm definitely not trading my 16 Crosstrek for this because of these bad looking interiors.

However, I think the "real deal" for Wilderness models is the Outback, because you get the (modest) increased off road capability, but also a much more powerful engine option. I love the Impreza/Crosstrek, but the CW offers the least upgrades of all 3 wilderness models.

Yea, the only negative for the OW is the considerably larger size. I mean it can be an advantage too, if you carry a lot of people. For me though, I am retired with no kids, so the Impreza/Crosstrek is the ideal size. Subaru really needs a moderately boosted turbo (say slightly over 200hp with good low end torque) to bridge the gap between the NA 182 hp engine and the Outback turbo. The FW and CW would sell like hotcakes with such an engine. (So probably would and Impreza RS) Make the 2.5L standard across the board.
@js9522
@js9522 3 ай бұрын
@@edsmith9855True about the turbo, however, you are likely then pushing the price to Forester levels. It would also be a complete crosstrek redesign to accommodate the power train, suspension, braking system, etc. as none of the current components could handle the 2.4l motor. Then you are basically looking at a WRX hatchback/wagon, which would likely take sales from the current WRX customer base. If they felt a turbo CW was needed, they would just add the WRX Sportback wagon to the lineup and be at a competitive price point as the Crosstrek Wilderness.

I don't really understand why you call the shifting "artificial". The CVT has unlimited ratio points and if it is programmed to pause at any point then isn't it a shift point or a "gear"? I had a 2020 Legacy Touring XT and using paddle shifting was very fast, smooth, and satisfying. The tack, speedometer , and seat of the pants was no different that any others trans. I suspect that the fastest 0-60 would be no programmed shift points, but in the twisties paddle shifting was fun and satisfying especially with the AWD system.

With all due respect, this video needs a few corrections. I believe you are wrong about Subaru measuring ground clearance differently or having a different definition. It has been in fact Manufacturers like the beforementioned Toyota, and others, who have published "running clearance, or unsprung clearance" Subaru has no need to do this because it is not trying to make it seem like it's 4x4's have more clearance than they actually do, because they don't MAKE 4x4's with solid axles and big pumkin diff's. 4x4's that have solid axles and big pumpkin differentials are the ones who tend to use running clearances to avoid the ugly truth about Solid Axle differentials.. When it comes to the Subaru, they are IFS cars.They have similar flat low points, none of which is the differential which, at least on the Subaru is well tucked in. I own a Subaru, and have owned Subaru's, and it's ground clearance numbers refer to GROUND CLEARANCE. as defined by the industry. I'm not sure where you got that information about Subaru using a different standard or definition, but it makes no sense. Why would they? And why would they need to. There is NOTHING hanging low on a Subaru. There is no REASON to cheat or tweak. If I am wrong, please post your source and I will acknowledge it. As far as Toyota, the Land Cruiser, it used to be full solid axles on both ends. But now, much like the Subaru, it is a IFS in front, BUT unlike the Subaru, I believe it has a solid rear axle in the back, which means it has a big differential that cannot be raised out of the way. This would be it's lowest point, and there is little that can be done about it except larger tires or portals. In the past, it has been TOYOTA, and other Solid Axle manufacturers of offroad equip that use solid axles, who were NOT using true ground clearance, not Subaru. So in my opinion, you are not only wrong about Subaru, but also if there IS a difference in reporting, it is Toyota that is using the more forgiving method. Subaru would have no need to, you could flip the whole car wheels up and play cards on the bottom of a modern Subaru. After I installed skid plates, I was amazed at all the flat real estate. No diff's hanging down. Nothing but A arms, and brakes, and they don't count. They are right next to the tire, and generally you don't need full clearance right next to a wheel. Diff's on solid axles are a much bigger problem, but as the guy said. Just pick your line and be conscious of it. The REASON that Toyota suffers in the diff comparison, is that it has a low hanging diff. Subaru doesn't. And that is actually not a big deal Solid axles have other advantages, you just have to pick the right line to avoid smacking the pumkin. But don't pee on Subaru and tell me it's raining. They do it right, and that is an HONEST ground clearance stat. Subaru is NOT measuring the highest point of ground clearance. That is FAKE NEWS. It just doesn't have to deal with low hanging diffs at all, because it has Independant suspension. Take a tape measure and measure from the bottom of the Subaru Diff to the ground (empty weight, new car). If anything it will be a BETTER spec on some Subaru's where usually the lowest point is a cross member BELOW the level of the lowest differential surface. (going on memory for that one). You are also wrong about articulation. You DO get more articulation with ALL of the Wilderness Models, because they are not spacer lifts, they are STRUT lifts. You don't just get more clearance, you get more strut articulation range. Something that a spacer lift cannot give you. Regarding MPG, even when driving offroad, you should normally be in the NORMAL Mode, and not a special setting just because you left the pavement. Xmode 1 actually hurts MPG, so keep it in regular mode except for the most difficult obstacles. Remember the regular driving mode IS an X mode. You are ALWAYS using torque vectoring. The regular driving position is the compromise between the logic and strategies of the two X mode settings, one for the most limited wheel spinning and aggresive braking, and the other for the best momentum and less aggresive torque vectoring at low wheel spin. The NORMAL driving mode, is actually the fuzzy logic that is in between these two strategies, and is the BEST mode to be in MOST of the time, even, and especially offroad, unless you are doing something really challenging that requires a more extreme torque vectoring strategy. Torque vectoring (Xmode) uses the braking system. Obviously using the BRAKES is going to hurt MPG! When you were talking price comparison about Bronco Sports, you said it's not really a fair comparison because Sports have a simulated rear locker. But this is not actually accurate. MOST of the Bronco Sports sold do NOT have the simulated rear locker. Only the 7K higher priced Badlands edition has this neat simulated locker. The vast majority of Bronco Sports that you see out on the road DO NOT have any sort of locker, simulated or not, at the rear axle. So if you are comparing prices with that as a factor, add thousands more for the Top Trim of the Bronco. Also keep in mind that the Subaru has a better tow capacity at 3500 lbs, better than the sport by 1500 lbs. Databyter

The skidplate is a joke, and you dont get a better engine like in the Outback Wilderness. I actually think the Outback Wilderenss is the best model if you can come up with a few thousand more. Reliability has improved in the later generations, but it’s come at the cost of AWD performance. Subaru’s systems are solid, but in this segment a Jeep Compass, Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos and a few others will outperform the Subaru on the same tires and same surface. The Subaru’s trump card is ground clearance and value pricing.

Ridiculous. A lifted little car pretending to be something ha-ha. The engine is from the 90's and the mpg is similar to what I get from a mini van. So just pay more for all that lifted plastic?

Ford is on my don't buy it list. If I were given a Ford I'd resell and get something that's not junk. I'll just say no to RAM, Jeep, Dodge as well.

Same here on Ford. Wouldn't have a Ram either. Surprisingly, my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon had zero issues in the almost seven years I owned it.

I love that it's black. It looks tough and in the long run it will look better. If you don't like it you can always get the limited or sport.

It’s so late. Renegade has been doing this exact thing since 2015! I don’t know how anyone can think Subaru is off road capable before 2022 for certain models and now 24 for others. It’s all show no go with this brand but the people who don’t know a lick about cars will swear these (before this trim) are capable and their not. Those people will look you in a face calling a renegade NOT capable when it has all the equipment PLUS that this crosstreck JUST received! Typical Japanese car. Riding off a crazy fan base that lies, instead of actual capabilities like EVERY Jeep has.

The Renegade is just Fiat garbage. Off-road ability doesn't mean anything when it's in the shop every five minutes. I personally wouldn't buy either of them. I won't touch anything with a CVT and I won't touch anything made by crappy Chrysler/Fiat.

@@nodak81 it’s not. Renegade Facebook group and forums see them 200,000 plus all day everyday! Your as misinformed as they get! FIAT? What’s wrong with FIAT? Since you’re on KZfaq you can do research like I did and type “fiat reliability “ and watch owners tell you the truth! You’re just 360 degrees WRONG.

The Renegade is nothing more than a rebadged Fiat 500x. Meaning it's a piece of crap. Someone I know has one that broke down and they waited months for a simple part to be shipped from Italy.
