▶ In this video I talk about the breakaway & unrecognized state of Biafra, located in East/South Nigeria. Biafra declared its independence in 1967 after a series of persecutions of the Igbo people within Nigeria. It fought in a conflict against Nigeria until 1970 when, despite the support from various African and European nations, it had to surrender to avoid total destruction. The reason why Biafra claims independence, in addition to it being a response to Nigerian persecution, is the fact that they consider themselves a different nation than Nigeria, something that we can understand by viewing the pre-colonial borders of this territory, as well as the early colonial ones. The first British colonies in Nigeria were separated in two, the Northern and Southern Nigerian protectorates. In around 1900, simply for administrative convenience, they decided to join the two and created a single Nigerian colony, which was then granted independence as a whole. The amalgamation of Nigeria and the different cultures within it led to various conflicts that last until modern times, the most significant one so far being the one in Biafra.

As a Nigerian, i will be very happy if Biafra is achieved. We will respect each other as we have nothing in common, the British joined us as one nation while we have never been the same in all ramifications. I wish for igbos to have their country. Best of luck.

I don't know, with the climate changes it might be better with a federal model or perhaps a confederate model instead of full independence? Because people *are* going to struggle in especially the north with the changes. Having more land available would help the people of Nigeria to weather the storm. Also, having more strength demographic strength in the south might help curtail some of the ideas of those who have more extreme Muslim views as moderates and southerners might be able to ally to some degree. As a European it was heart-wrenching to hear about someone being jailed for being an atheist in the country... People should be able to make decisions for themselves about their life stances, sexuality and political beliefs and just in general about how they live their lives as long as they don't harm others. Of course it's possible that people locally there might benefit from independence if the area really is that rich in resources. But even so that would probably leave more people suffering then it would help in Nigeria as a whole I believe. And I believe that compromises can usually be found... Of course greater autonomy is *definitely* needed. The heartlands of each ethnic group *should* be allowed to have its own laws and a great deal with autonomy. Mixed areas can be treated as a condominium.

Honestly, the world needs less nationalism and more unity amongst people. This had nothing to do with any former colonists. We need to be brothers and sisters together no matter what borders were or which borders are. Classification of people is to divide us and put us against each other.

@@erik3371 Large countries is just bad for democracy in general. Most existing countries *should* be split up into smaller countries allowing people to govern themselves more locally. Doesn't mean that people can't or shouldn't cooperate, but it should be the choice of people locally. I mean, just look at how messed up democracy is in countries like the US, Russia, India, UK and France, or even China (they do have democracy at a local level)

You didn't mention the role of Britain in the biafran war, British companies like Shell and BP had the monopoly over the oil business in Nigeria, so they supported the Nigerian government with everything they can, they know that an independent biafran wouldn't welcome them so much

@@Obalufon Akwa Ibom produces 31% oil Delta 21% oil majority Igbo Rivers state 21% majority Igbo Others are Imo, anambra, bayelsa, Edo, Lagos and Kogi. You can now see that majority are from the South Eastern region of Nigeria, before it was divided

I remember the war in Biafra when I was 18. The news reports were harrowing of a country desperately trying to establish itself. The suffering of the civilian population was appalling.

Thank you so much for making this informative video. What struck me the most was learning that President Richard Nixon even acknowledged the genocide occurring in Biafra, yet still chose to remain neutral due to the fact that our US military was currently subverting democracy in Vietnam. As an American, I'm ashamed of the hypocrisy which governed my country's foreign policy under the Monroe Doctrine, and even through today. I now fully understand why the vocalist for the punk rock band, the Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra, said that he derived his stage name from "American plasticity at home, and it's results abroad." I hope that many more Americans will watch this video and understand the plight of real peoples that we often ignore in favor of self-righteous global posturing. I truly believe the goal of American foreign policy should be acknowledging the humanity of all people and their rights of self-determination, not banking on internal foreign conflicts based on financial speculation. PS- I love this channel. The videos are so interesting, and you have a very soothing, cool voice. Thank you for all the content that you produce.

Biafra may be unknown to most, but anyone born before, say, 1960 would know of it due to the horrific starvation at the end of the war and the images that spread around the world then.

Biafra is not an Igbo word. The name Biafra is Portuguese in origin. The Portuguese called the whole of the southeastern, southsouth of Nigeria and SE Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea Biafra. These areas were called Biafra by the Portuguese as they are coastal areas and in old Portuguese Baffa means winds, related to water and the coast.

I am a Biafran. And Biafra and the history of war behind it is very real. The truth is, there are lots of external interests to keep Biafra in the Nigerian state, most of which comes from the British empire, because of the natural resources in that region. Plus, there is a fear that if Biafra should gain freedom, then all Africa will eventually be free, and that is not good for the western world. For example, for China to be where it is today, they had Japan to look up to.... then other countries in Asia followed suit and learned from each other, and today, almost every Asian country is doing well. Biafra is the light of Africa, but it seems the world have refused to let it shine bright, due to the enormous impact it would have on the African continent. The impact would be so great that every African living in the west would prefer to go back home, even the African American in the United States would trace their roots and go back home. I'm hoping that one day the rising sun of Biafra will shine on it's people and all over the continent of Africa

The only reason we don’t see it as socialist is because of its high democratic participation and structure, but local laws and economic policies are about as socialist you can get without being considered communist

Sadly that not happening, unlike the UK were a referendum for independence (Scotland) is possible, this is Nigeria were the Hausa people dominate the government and it would not allow the south to become free bc of the mistake of 1914 and the fact the south is richer and more resources than the north, if that was to happen Biafra and Oduduwa would be the richest nation in Africa and on top ten worldwide leaving Nigeria with an agro based and poor economy despite the huge population

War Girls by Toni Onyebuchi is a science fiction book based upon the Nigerian Civil War. While reading the first book, I did some research and learned so much about the war and Biafra. The interesting thing was support for Biafra and Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War. For example Biagra was supported by France West Germany, China, Israel, Portugalija, Francisco Spain, Vatican, South Africa, Rhodesia, Haiti, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Czechoslovakia.

Wrong. Nobody supported Biafra eventually. At first they did orally but only God knows how British met them in round table. Think about it. If for instance france supported Biafra with just food, do you think the starvation would happen? I’ll say all these happened because biafrans are black. The reason African countries have to be careful on issues of taking sides with Anglo-Americans or Russia or china. Because when they eventually negotiate amongst them, no one will give a fvck about any black that supported them in the first place

West Germany, Spain and France especially supported Biafra with clothing and foods sent in through haiti they never supplied weapons because they were scared of getting directly involved knowing the possible reaction from the Soviet union. I'm from Edo but I've lived all my life in the North, my step-dad is a Yoruba Muslim. But I can tell you without a doubt, that the north is seriously dragging this country back. And I am not exaggerating. I think it'll be best if Kwara, Kogi, Benue and Plateau states from the north join the south if any breakaway where to happen where to happen. But this is all wishful thinking.

We used to collect money at church to help the starving people of Biafra, it was horrible Civil War, thousands starved to death. Biafra was oil rich. Biafra was Christian & the north were Muslim.The Biafrans were persecuted and broke away. Unfortunately they lost their fight for freedom.

I commend the effort of the narrator to expose the secret war against Biafra by Britain and allies. Nevertheless, inaccuracies in the cause of the conflict, number of civilians killed and the role British govt. played contributed to the impunity meted against Biafrans today. A renewed effort is now underway to restore Biafra in 2023 at any cost.

Like several others, I remember news stories about the war and famine in Biafra, and the Igbo people (who were referred to as 'Ibo' at the time I think). But didn't know much about it, so thank you. Also, we now know why there is a Lagos in Nigeria as well as one in Portugal!

The biggest factor is not religion, it's a matter of culture. There's a general distain between people in the region, and it doesn't just go away. There were thousands of different people groups, most were destroyed post independence. My father's tribe went from being as common as Jones, to being less than 100 men and a footnote to history. They still fight, even after leaving the country.

Biafra is some corrupt Portugese translitteration for Bafoura, which was the capital town of a Central African kingdom located around northwest Cameroon and southeast Nigeria that preceded the Bamun Kingdom (very likely its direct successor) . The "Biafra" Kingdom was a province of the Anzicana Kingdom. Then the British colonizers came around and started to Yoko Effect at different populations, ethnic groups and dissolved kingdoms from territories fragmented by the so called "Scramble For Africa" , playing the divide and rule act and there we are.

If Nigeria took those regions, they would have had Biafra surrounded. And they did in the end. They did take those regions and also slaughtered many. It's absolutely terrible for those minorities that were just casualties of war, but Biafra didn't take them to be sovereign over them but for self-preservation.

Overall, a commendable effort for a very complex and divisive subject. As one would imagine, there are *many* aspects that many would argue might not necessarily reflect accuracy in the account of events. For example: 1.) The map of the area doesn't reflect the region in question and seems to lump other sub-regions together. 2.) While a good account of the underlying role of the British government was presented, the immediate events that led up to the civil conflict itself i.e. the massacre was not mentioned. This is important to provide context, the absence of which casts Nigeria as a brutish villain whose actions may be considered as either premeditated or reactionary and without probable cause against a hapless vulnerable disenfranchised minority. Could this be really be the case? Could there have been flashpoints and legitimate concerns? 3.) Also, please the link to the amalgamation document mentioned at 5:52 might not be in the description as indicated, as of the time posting this comment. 4.) Suggestion for further reading from varying accounts and multiple sources, whether in favour and/or otherwise, would surely help provide a more rounded description of what truly transpired and still persists. Once again, this is a commendable effort!

Nigeria's problem is simple: THE IGBO. Ironically, the failure of Nigeria is actually a perverse solution to the "Igbo problem". Nigeria's problem is NOT failure of leadership, bad constitution, poor economy, endemic corruption, failed infrastructure, etc. The problem with Nigeria can be summarized in 4 simple sentences: I: Unless a society runs a merit-based system, all sectors deteriorate. II: Nigeria tried merit before and ended up with Igbo leading EVERY sector (economy, education, military, science, transport, etc). III: Nigeria refuses to go back to merit because of 'risk' of Igbo domination. IV: Nigeria cannot improve, because it cannot run a merit-based society. Igbo people (the engine of Nigeria’s advancement), are stifled by an Islam-motivated cabal which prefers power to meritocracy. Igbo ostracisation is the main reason for Nigeria’s irreversible backwardness. SUMMARY: With merit the Igbo inevitably become the top dogs; without merit Nigeria goes to the dogs. SOLUTION: The only way forward is Igbo autonomy or independence. Otherwise neither Igbos nor Nigerians can make much progress. A successful Igbo nation will act as an INSPIRATION, CHALLENGE, CATALYST AND MODEL for what is left of Nigeria. (The same thing happened after Singapore left Malaysia. Malaysia experienced accelerated progress, because they were challenged by Singapore's phenomenal transformation.) Very ironically, Biafra is actually Nigeria's only hope.

I love the video as an Igbo Nigerian myself. But the representation of the colours you said in the video are wrong. The red actually represents the blood of the people that died in the purge of igbo people in the country. Apart from that most of what you have pointed out are fairly correct. In my opinion I feel Biafra needs to form but it should still be a part of Nigeria like a confederation of nations like the UK, but these are just wishful thinking we will continue to be oppressed and looked down on for the foreseeable future sadly. But biafra is just a small issue in the absolute cesspool of chaos that the UK imposed on us against our will as a sorry excuse for a country.

Most Pan African flags have red symbolizing the peoples blood. Its not entirely wrong. Even in the Kenyan, Malawian, Libyan and South Sudanese flags red symbolizes the same thing. All Pan African Flags have the same meaning: Black=The people, Red=Blood, Green= Nature/wealth of the land.

This narrator of the Biafra story is so accurate I feel tears of joy coming down my cheeks! Because I had wondered in the past many years especially after the gruesome war Nigeria government waged against my people of Biafra why the international community kept quiet in the face of wanton killings of Biafra citizens in Nigeria. Could it be that nobody hears about our pain in the hands of muslim northern Nigeria and their jihad against Christians in Biafra. Your narrative showing the very beginning of the Biafra cause and her subjugation in the hands of feudal Muslims from northern Nigeria who have not only seized our mineral oil resources but bent on exterminating our Human Resources in order to take over our ancestral homeland has confirmed to me that these facts are known to the international community. @@igboBiafra010 Somehow you think the northerners are happy with this current system. We fear the rule of an igbo president because of favoritism, this may end up worsening ethnic tensions and may lead to a full blown civil war(god forbid). Even though the north has dominated Nigerian politics, it brought nothing to us. the politicians don't care about thier people or anything, they only care about themselves.

I think thats quite understatement, because Biafra is THE name used to describe poor country with many hungry people. In Yugoslavia it was very big topic, and everyone heard about it, and everyone know where it is 😂

Im half biafran and half yoruba and i cant lie the country is better up splitting up most people dont want to hear this but the north and the south are just way too idealisticaly differnt to function as an effective country and yeah i grew up in th enorthern part of nigeria so i know this. Most yorubas get along with the igbos and vice versa but dont really get along with the northern part anyways this is just me thinking out loud.

I always thought Nigeria should actually be 3 countries, because of the religious and ethnic division and the obvious geographical lines, even before I knew the history of Biafra. Just cut the country in three along the Benué and Niger River and everyone would be happier. But as always the British (being British) made their colonies by drawing random lines on a map without even knowing what’s on the map.

there are igbo people at the west of the river Niger. They are in Delta state for example. The anioma people (igbo) are native to where they live.

I do love your "representation" of Biafra but don't call the southern part of Nigeria before amalgamation and colonization animalistic because Igbos and some tribe around the region were monarchies and democratic (acephalous bu the British). I'm Igbo and would like to make the correction. Thank you for this information I received from this video

There are minorities in the so called biafra, like Akwa-ibom state, cross river and rivers state that rejected the Biafra concept. Because the igbo majority will end up marginalizing them. During the civil war ,they (the igbo majority) killed alot of ibibios & ijaws. Hence why the minorities prefer a bigger Nigeria state than to be clurk up wit biafra. The minorities align more with the present south-south Regional structure.

There are igbo communities in all those places which is why they were part of Biafra in the first place. Abd the south-south was a concept made after tge war which cut into igboland.

Also, not all of them rejected this. A lot of them support secession as well and before the civil war, their leaders also voted to secede and join Biafra too. It’s the Nigerians (the northerners and the westerners) and the British that have succeeded in dividing Eastern Nigerians. The Easterner have lived relatively peacefully amongst each other for centuries. You’re telling me that the same Hausa Muslims that tried killing them in the North, and Ibibio or an Ijaw would support over an Igbo that lives right next to them? Does that even make sense?
