My father was a gunner in the South African Artillery for the entire North African campaign. He was previously involved in the East African Campaign liberating Ethiopia from the Italians. He escaped capture at Tobruk and was at the final battle of El Alamein. As a veteran today I wear his medals according to military protocol on my right chest.

That's nice that you wear your father's medals did he speak German as many germans were farmers in South Africa but the English killed them in the boar war of 1900-01

@@michaelvalentine4867You need to read up on something before commenting... South Africa's white tribes consist of two main groups, Afrikaaners and English speakers, there are some minority white tribes too, like Portuguese, English and German. You talk about the Boer War like it was a genocide of the Boer people. It wasn't. Yes, there were concentration camps here, for the Boer civilians, and yes, thousands of old men, women and children died in those camps due to British ineptitude and indifference, but there was NOT a deliberate decision to murder the Boer people. It is also true that more Boer civilians died than Boer soldiers... As for targeting German speaking farmers, the Germans kept a close eye on the British actions in South Africa, and when a German Lutheran priest was murdered by an Australian/British officer, there was an official letter from the German Kaiser to England to answer for this crime. If there was a mass murder of German farmers by the Brits, Germany would have raised an international outcry. For reference, my ancestors are buried at Irene concentration camp cemetery, most of them in their teens or younger. The Afrikaans Nationalists taught us that only Boers, or Afrikaaners, fought the Brits, but that is not true. There were volunteers from America, Ireland, England, Scotland, Russia, Germany, The Netherlands, France, and Belgium as well as some other countries... as well as Jews fighting the Brits.

@@mdk9495Ja, boet. Your attitude is what made National Service a living hell for English-speaking South Africans in the 70s and 80s. Luckily your sort were only a minor percentage of my fellow Afrikaans soldiers. I had family arrested for supporting Robey Leibrand in their anti-British resistance during WWII. I also had family fighting against Nazism! Well, your type of Afrikaaner only gave us Apartheid and hate.

My Dad was an officer with the British 7th Hussars, blown up by a landmine at El Alamein and lived his long life in pain from damaged feet. It’s interesting to hear about the hardships both sides must have endured. He always spoke about the luxury of occasionally swimming in the sea. Love you dad.

My opa was a smaller framed man conscripted into the DAK as I think it was protocol to not send larger troops that required more sustenance in that theater. He was, according to my dad that he was rearguard during the retreat from Tunisia. Being a radio operator, he signaled that the Brits arrived, promptly smashed his kit and surrendered. Spent a few years in the U.S. in camp Ruston.

WW2 Germany brought warfare to an absolute artform. From the uniforms to strategy down at the lowest level. A place for everything , and everything in it's place.

The Germans and Helmut Lang could not be beat in the design category. Germany won that by a long shot. Incredible uniforms and use of ancient symbols (sadly changing those ancient symbols into modern logos of evil). Germany got beat by their over design. Tanks too heavy and wide, rockets that are just pointed in the basic direction meanwhile Russia and America just pushed out massive numbers of tanks, planes, jeeps, trucks and artillery.

I was also in Darmstadt FRG in '75-78, also at Cambrai Barracks. Most of the buildings were built in the '30's. I believe , as was my barracks, which was a German Army barracks before Americans arrived. This man saw the same things I did, with some exceptions. The full name of the post was Cambrai- Fritsch Kaserne. I was an MP, Bravo Co. 709th Mp Battalion b4 they changed the unit designation, & had many memorable moments. There were 5 other US Army posts within our area. I loved being in Germany at that time but have no desire to go back. I'll keep my memories intact.

My dad served in the Afrika Korps against his will. He was Polish but forced on pain of death to him and his family to sign the Volksliste which meant he was to be conscripted into the Wehrmacht. The Germans made him diffuse landmines. He survived by mere chance. Left him traumatised for the rest of his life. Amazing that he still managed a relatively normal life after the war. His liberation was to be captured by the British in the Dodecanese and to be taken to the Polish Army Corps after that. Nothing to celebrate here. The Afrika Korps was just another part of Hitlers evil war machine which messed up my dads, and millions of other peoples, lives.

My father was in the Afrika Corps in panzer pioneer battalion 33 ,15th Panzer Division, holder of the iron cross for bravery. I was involved in the bush war in Angola in 1975 and tasted real action. Both of us can just sit silently and watch the Greatest Country' in the World fall apart because of a lack of will to take any action. In our language we call such leaders "Geelgatte" (yellow bellies) and seeing these leaders on TV yapping endlessly and doing absolutely nothing makes me nauseous. You keep this up and you will have to learn Arabic and your wife measure up for a Burkha, mark my words.. Once The US becomes a Caliphate the protests will never happen again, because heads will be taken. They sure as Hell don't happen in any Muslim Country.
