I find myself doing a similar light-toned patter with dogs who are reactive toward me. It doesn't really matter what you say. Dogs can hear stress held in tension that transmits through the vocal cords. So the fact that she is not afraid of him is something he can pick up and find reassuring. They listen to pitch as well, and her pitch was on the high side (not intimidating) without being scared or yelpy. Her body was relaxed, and she was clearly speaking to him without doing anything to escalate the situation like staring or otherwise hinting that she was interested in a fight or dangerous. She was also communicating that, while she was hearing that he's uncomfortable, him trying to scare her out of the house was not going to work. She responded immediately, confidently (and compassionately) to his vocal warnings, so he knew she was getting his signals but choosing not to comply or escalate. Jed decided that he would have to put up with her and stopped trying to scare her off. It was really brilliantly demonstrated and a fun segment to show her expertise.

I see a lot of people arguing over Victoria's "technique" to deal with this aggressive dog. I dont think it has anything to do with asserting dominace. The alpha and dominace theory has been proven wrong. It is an outdated technique that Victoria no longer believes in. Dogs know the difference between you and them. They know you are a human and not part of the pack, let alone pack leader. And asserting dominance over a dog has been shown to be dangerous as well. People should remember, these episodes are over a decade old. New research and dog training has changed a lot since these episodes and Victoria has changed her techniques as well. Things she used to believe she no longer advocates for. If you havent seen her new episodes where she adds commentary to these old episodes, you should go watch them. She sheds a lot of light of this subject and you might learn something as well. We are all only human. Victoria is capable of making mistakes too and she has.

Ulises Ibarra See and I don’t understand why people use the excuse of “oh I see him as my child so I don’t wanna do this or that, because I see him as my child.” Children need leadership just as much as dogs do if not more! I see my dog is my child but I don’t baby him! I do not treat him as though he is an infant because he is not (if anything, he is more like a toddler.) I treat him like he is in need of leader ship and like I am the leader in our relationship because that’s what I am, I am the leader and I am the teacher. I am the one who is supposed to guide him into the behavior that I would like to see out of him. Babying will get you nowhere when training a dog

Maya Sonya Exactly, sorry if that’s not how my comment came across! What I mean is that the owners wanted a dog that was more aggressive than the average pet so he could guard the wife while the husband was away. That level of control and balance for an animal that should be friendly with guests and aggressive toward intruders, requires a high level of training, which obviously Jed has not had.

@@Southernpinesranch 100% agree. Both my rescues are neglet cases with zero early positive socialisation. It was all bad. No amount of training can fully undo the damage, only instill better coping mechanisms. I believe the vast majority of dogs in the UK are badly socialised. Few can read social cues effectively and many have barely and manners with other dogs.
@kezkezooie8595
@kezkezooie8595 4 жыл бұрын
@@leahkantrowitz5577 If you can get your neighbour to agree to walking their dog along with you while you walk yours, preferably one of yours at a time at first, you may find an improvement. Keep a good distance apart at first and, if your dog lunges, growls or shows any other sign of aggression, just about face and walk them in the other direction for a bit before turning again and joining your neighbour and their dog once more. If your dog is food motivated, treating them as you walk them with the lab can help as well. If you walk them without the lab, use praise but don't treat them with food, that way there's another pleasant thing they'll associate with walking with the lab. You may have to do this quite a few times until the penny drops but it will eventually do the trick so they can begin walking together. It's always a good idea to introduce dogs on neutral ground. After a while, when they walk nicely together, your dogs will come to associate the neighbour's lab with the pleasant experience of a walk so they're less likely to be set off even when they're back on their own turf. If you and your neighbour feel it's okay, you could even eventually socialise them (once again on neutral ground) off lead but that's for much further down the track and not really necessary to get them to just stop going off at the lab next door. The main thing to remember is that while sometimes this can work quite quickly, it may take months before they completely get used to the lab, so you have to do it on a regular basis and be consistent.

@crosita1
@crosita1 4 жыл бұрын
Positive trainers do this all the time, they just don't demonstrate how willing and dangerous the dog is at the beginning. Because it's really bad for the dog. Every time the dog bites, they become much more likely to bite again in the future. So putting Jed under so much stress and allowing him to aggress like that is completely counterproductive to teaching him not to bite. It impresses the viewers and drives home the message, no doubt. But it is not in the best interest of the dog. Most positive trainers find each rehearsal of aggression so harmful to the dog's progress (and therefore increasing the risk of the dog getting euthanized for future aggression) that they won't set the dog up to fail like that for the sake of a more powerful audience experience. I'm a fan of Victoria but I still find it hypocritical for her to say that they must 100% avoid giving him the opportunity to aggress ever again, but having been being responsible for setting Jed up to bite someone in a bite suit for wow factor.
@taegra
@taegra 4 жыл бұрын
@@crosita1 From what I gathered in this episode, the bite suit was used because up until that point Jed hadn't actually bitten anyone yet and they wanted to understand in a safe and controlled way whether or not he was willing to. A lot of dogs of "large powerful breeds" don't have this temperament. It depends on the dog, training, and breeding (for example, getting a dog from someone that breeds guard dogs. It is /not/ always a breed-thing). I don't like how you imply it's the breed, size, or body composition that is an issue. A freaking chihuahua can do a lot of damage too. it seems that this dog however is naturally aggressive, the owners can only decrease the aggression in this case, they are not actually the cause of it. Like imagine a situation where you feel like any action taken is a life or death one, that's the sort of anxiety the dog has, when around people close to you, it seems fine, but when a stranger enters the situation that anxiety reappears and the fight or flight response activates, since in the house Jeb is cornered, he reacts like any cornered animal does. Dogs have personalities like humans do, some can be aggressive others not so much.

When you get a breed that's naturally protective, exposing them to other people and dogs and just animals in general is important so that the dog knows how to identify who is a threat and who isn't. That dog is protective over her bc he doesn't know who ISN'T a threat. It would also be good if Kelly knew signals to give to the dog that she feels unsafe so the dog can do its job. I often snap to get my dog aware that i'm feeling unsafe of my surroundings so they are on alert mode. If i'm taking money out of the ATM they scan the area behind me so if anything is weird, they bump their nose on the back of my leg to let me know. PLS do research if you r getting a dog for guarding . They still need training.

Isolation can enhance aggression. They didn't mention how socialized the dog was. But just staying in the house, the dog gets hyper-protective of the house.

I agree. Also my dogs NEVER have liked men in big coats or hats. Like if he can't see them he doesn't like them. No normal guest would walk in wearing that. I understand that guy needed protection from the bite but i feel like it just encourages the dog to bite the guest more

2:30 here is a mistake a lot of people make. The “oh his tail is wagging he must be happy.” Assumption. A wagging tail is not always a happy tail. First look at the dogs posture, stiff, focused, ears forward. Thats an alert guard dog. Second, look at his tail, its also stiff as it wags side to side in a more erratic way. Almost like someones leg bobbing up and down when anxious. When he grabs the man and attacks, the tail whips about side to side. All clear signs that dog is aggressive and aggravated, not friendly.

American Bulldogs are not for everyone. They need a lot of socialization when they're puppies and discipline. My girl is sweet as can be, but I worked with her and was super patient with her. I also started socializing her as soon as she was old enough to start(with people and dogs). She's great. Loyal as can be, friendly, but protective when she senses someone is a bad person or she feels I'm threatened in any way. They do get jealous though, mine is jealous of the cat, books, and my switch.

I have a half American bulldog pitbull cross he's fine as long we let the person in. God help them if they come in uninvited. He understands when it's appropriate to be aggressive. These types of dogs need a strong minded owner and lots of training. When they know the rules they are awesome members of the family.

I'm so glad she checked the thyroid! My sweet, loving greyhound got snappish some years back and did end up giving warning bites. He turned out to have a thyroid problem. In humans, one of the many symptoms of having low thyroid is fits of rage (and as a hypothyroid person I can confirm).
@paingoret6
@paingoret6 2 жыл бұрын
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism many years ago. A few years after that after eating healthier and losing some weight the doctor said I didn't have it anymore which I thought was great. Now, years later, I feel my neck and it seems like my thyroid is enlarged again. I don't have insurance and HATE going to doctors for anything but I'm planning to get insurance for next year for several other issues I have and this video made me think about getting my thyroid checked and treated. As soon as I heard the mention of hypothyroidism causing aggression in dogs I thought about my own anger issues that have been getting worse lately so I googled human aggression from it. I DEF need to get back on medication and am hoping it helps.
