In part two of the Total War series I take a look at the evolution of the franchise from Rome: Total War all the way to Napoleon: revamped game engines, the rise of the modding community and new AI systems. All of which had some bumps in the road along the way.

I disagree with you about the modding community. They are not as strong as they used to be. In medieval 2 and Rome 1, we had dozens of large overhaul mods with large teams working on their projects. In the later total war games, we are lucky if there are maybe two large overhaul mods per game. Most mods in later games change maybe a small part of the game. Large parts of areas which used to moddable are completely gated, the campaign map for example.

The engine change with Empire was a fatal blow to modding. It went from a fully open engine, to a blackbox.

The campaign AI of Empire total war is still batshit insane on every difficulty without mods. Great analysis btw:)

I play on very hard and find it to easy most of the time. You may want to try changing your strategy or something. I have over 600 hours in the game tho..

Its not hard, just crazy. ETW's AI makes crazy moves and decisions on every difficulty. I was playing as Russia on the hardest difficulty and I invaded the Crimean khanate. I defeated their army and offered vassalage instead of complete annihilation as I besieged their only city and they refused, They wanted me to give them land and 5000 gold for a truce instead-_-

Oh, yeah I see what you're talking about now. AI does acts very stupid. I wish they'd revamp Empire or just make Empire 2. Just fix AI and other small problems and it'd make the game a gold mine.

Yes. Massivly improve the campaign AI, some fixes for the battle AI and add more unit or just uniform variety and it would have been the best thing ever.

I think these videos could have done with more specific examples. What kind of thing was the AI doing when it would disagree with itself?

I mean one thing it did was create endless one unit stacks, this got so bad that it seriously impacted performance and meant that it was often a necessity for the player to purposefully go take out the largest empires quickly so they couldn't make this problem too bad and save the game performance.

while being something great aestetically and from AI development perpsective it is still required to mention how failed the technical state of the Empire was and is. The game crashed at release and even with the current steam version I still had a bug that denied loading of the terrain textures. It was a great lesson to the company to not to rush releases

My craziest experience with Empire Total War was when I was playing Ottoman and the English suddenly decide they don't like me and send a fleet to land troops in my hinterland. Thing is, those troops didn't do anything. They just stood there. Same with the fleet. It was never moved away to do something else. Like, a freaking expensive doom stack of ships was just left standing around.

My first Total War game was Medieval 2, i loved it to bits but always found the AI a bit lacking, but then I was able to get Empire and I fell in love with it all over again. I like Medieval 2 as a historical playground, but I learned so much about war, economy, and geography are connected (at least, in the game)

With the whole "non-goal" orientated ai in Rome and Medieval, does that explain why you could have max relationship and allied to a nation, yet they'll still attack you within like two turns.

Thats why you gotta force them into needless and costly wars you have started or kill their generals/sabotage their cities with assassins if you want them to stay loyal.

I think it's more that the AI in Medieval 2 and Rome is programmed to always give an opponent to the player by having neighbors declare war on them, forcing wars of expansion to be the only path to victory.

Man I really, REALLY wish they made Empire II Total War. The first game is still so beloved despite how broken it is, they could make bank if they made a properly polished sequel.

Empire total war AI was still fucking hilarious, I gave France 100000 for Louisiana but they declined so I invaded them then they sued for peace after 5 turns, I accepted and then I actually got Louisiana for 100000, along with some irrelevant Caribbean islands.

Was RTW's campaign-level AI essentially Shogun/MTW's campaign AI, or a different beast altogether? The new 3D map seems to have created some problems for the AI that were not present in the first 2 titles, but I'm not sure if this is due to the introduction of a wholly new system, or the use of an earlier system that wasn't entirely suited to the 3D environment.

To the best of my knowledge, Rome and Medieval II used an upgraded version of the original Shogun/Medieval systems. I couldn't find more specific details than that. Though I believe the Unit AI was completely rewritten from Rome onwards. The neural network component I cover in part 1 was quickly abolished in later instalments.

The Empire Total War AI cannot even form an offensive battle line. A player can simply select units and drag a line at the same size as the enemies and after it forms, click forward. How hard can it be?

The problem is, the AI doesnt have an overarching grand plan and cannot be proactive towards achieving it. Bizzarely trying to make the game less reactive they ended up making it indecisive and impotent.

would you say that GOAP proves to be too unstable and unpredictable to design games around?

No I don't think so. GOAP has proven very good at providing opponents in games that can react to situations and plan for some intelligent outcomes. However, it isn't really built to scale for something like strategy games. Last I heard it still being used was in the likes of the Tomb Raider reboot and Shadow of Mordor/War. Like any good AI method it's just finding the problems best suited to it.

GOAP was first built for the FEAR game, so yes, I could have seen it having issues.

+Curtis Ridge Fear doesnt use neural networks. Its a boring old finite state machine.

Attila total war have problem yes...when war breaks with Sassanid empire for example with Danes sassanids and their allies will send full stack armies towards you that is problem to much math and yeah also al knows your location of armies around map they just see it I bet al knows where ambushing armies hide too that is a big problem

your video forgets the part where every AI on the warscape engine has been totally moronic and so easy to beat that it requires MASSIVE influxes of gold and recruiting slots to even slow the player down. Sure CA came up with some interesting ideas on coding AI, but it never worked. I came up with an idea to power cars off of tomato soup, but after my tomato soupmobile failed to work no one made youtube videos about it.

I agree with you that Total War's AI is not that great in terms of how it could potentially be; but honestly the current Rome 2 AI is functional and as an engineer who develops optmisation algorithms I can tell you creating some AI that comes remotely close to functional in Rome 2 is a massive task. Hell, writing AI for playing chess is hard enough.

Empire: Total War's world map A.I totally sucks. It took away all the fun of the game. I stopped playing it after a while. Probably one of the worst games in the series

seems to work just fine in my normal difficulty campaign , i have yet to see any silly expansions or wars happen anywhere , and the diplomacy isnt bonkers at all if you play your cards right , for example dont expand quickly cause nations are more likely to attack you , and often its enough to beat their largest army stack to force them to the negotiating table , what happens on hard or very hard is irrelevant cause anything above normal is pure nonsense
