In Guerilla Games 2017 release 'Horizon Zero Dawn', the landscapes of the future are ruled by 'the machines': mechanical animals of varying shapes in and sizes. In this first of two videos, I look at the myriad of AI systems built to support this mechanical wildlife and the decision making systems that allow them to think both independently and as part of a herd.

Patrons have waited very patiently for this one and I hope it's worth the wait. Horizon Zero Dawn has been an interesting game to tackle: there's a lot to explore here and delivering it in a way that everyone can engage in - like all other case studies - has been a challenge. I hope you find it interesting and I can get back to playing the game without my capture software running. 😀

One of the things I found the most impressive about the AI was that if you manage to find a spot where you can attack, but they can't, after a short while they will retreat out of your attack capacity, forcing you to break position to re-engage. It is so common in other games for the AIs either to just simply reset, or continue the futile attack until they are inevitably killed.

Yes indeed! I realised early-on I couldn't pick them from afar and game the systems underneath. Forcing me to enter combat more directly was rather terrifying.

My list of things I absolutely need for HZD2: - Be able to ride every machine, - Use machines for more than riding (i.e. guard post, follow etc), - The existence of both docile and hostile machines, - Machines with terrifying teeth, - More colossal-size machines lol. I can think of more, but this is enough for now. Oh another one, when talking to NPC, I don't just want to see a close up shot of Aloy's face-I get it, your engine is amazing.

@@ifaptoyourface2148 They should balance how one corrupts a machine. I was thinking the machine would jerk around in the process and sending a stress signal to close machines. Also, the size of the machine should matter: Small should be easier to corrupt, but it gets slightly harder with Medium, harder with Large and increasingly hard with Colossal.

I appreciate the AI in this game so much. It's clear that the AI prioritizes experience over challenge, even in higher levels. Without it, some of the battles (which are hard in and of themselves) would be near impossible. The stealth is especially forgiving, I find.
@startide
@startide 5 жыл бұрын
Most of those games require basically impossible feats, unless you have godlike powers and are essentially power fantasy games of course. The amount of ennemies you have to grind through is just too much for one person to manage / survive. Stealth games in particular are often very forgiving in that area.

Thank you so much for covering this game! I've been watching my partner play every night for the last 2 weeks (I'm going through health issues so I haven't been able to play games myself for a while unfortunately) and I've been enraptured by the way the AI reacts and adapts to the player. I remember when games were just pixels on a screen and it was exciting just to be able to shoot at enemies who simply ran at you in a straight line haha. The way technology has improved in the last few decades is absolutely astounding. I wish more people took the time to stop and appreciate the work that goes into making these games. They're much more than "just games" meant for our entertainment, they stand as proof of how far we've come with technology and I'm excited to see what happens in the coming years. One question: How does the AI in this game change behavior based on difficulty level? Does playing on easy vs hard for example change how aggressive enemies are, change how easy it is for them to attack you, etc? Maybe you cover this in the next episode but if not it's something I've been curious about :)

Great, glad you like the video and that you're enjoying the game as you play together. The difficulty largely impacts the crafting resources, health/damage of enemies and Aloy and the XP gained. It slightly adjusts the sensitivity of the AI sensors, but from what I know - and have played - the behaviours are still very much the same. I hope your health improves soon and you can get back to playing some games. 😃

Welcome. There's a lot of common terminology in my videos but after a couple it should become a little easier to understand. To reinforce this, the series is heavily self-referential: I point to other videos I have made to help flesh out understanding (be it other games that tackled similar problems or the AI 101 series). In relation to HZD, there are in fact aspects the AI discussed in part 2 that relate heavily to next months topic.
@Gapeagle

The AI may be one to leave itself open for attacks, but man, HZD's machines are still much more aggressive than a lot of enemies in game.

I love this game for how lived in the world feels. My only problem with Horizon Zero Dawn were limited areas. The machines would not pursue you if you crossed those artificial area borders. In some case you could exploit for an easy kill in others when you cross the area border the enemies in the area would re-spawn and the loot from from fallen ones would disappear. I hope they will improve it in PC version, or at least allow the mod community to play with those mechanics. It would be amazing if they made the PC version mod friendly, the game has amazing potential for it.

Now I wish the game had more variety in terms of pack members, instead of the usual 2-3 machine types within a pack/herd (acquisition, recon and combat). It'd be interesting to run across a combat detachment of say... Ravagers, Stalkers and Red-eye Watchers having been sent to dispatch you for destroying a convoy or three of Shell-Walkers, or even a Stormbird flanked by a flock of Glinthawks enroute to a massive scrap site like 'The Gravehoard'. Of course, that'd likely take some meddling with 'The Collective' A.I manager; but I'm curious to see how the combat manager would handle the aforementioned combinations as well as others.

OK a very silly question. All these systems are there to ensure "believable" enemies and facilitate the player in getting their objectives done. But what if in some rare instances, the enemy "snapped"? Like it starts breaking the rules to ensure its own survival? I think you know about that there is one instance in The Last Guardian where the player character is in danger and there are the magical mirrors infront of our animal that it fears. But it overcomes it's fear and jumps to save us. Something like this but not scripted.

Very interesting. I wonder what the biggest differences are between HTM and GOAP? Anyone have a good resource for that?
@AIandGames
@AIandGames 5 жыл бұрын
The big difference is task construction and decomposition. HTN assumes actions can either be individual (primitive tasks) or macros (composite tasks). Preconditions of composite tasks are designed to ensure that the whole macro can be employed without failure (lest a runtime issue occurs). The big benefit in game design is that GOAP doesn't permit the designer to distinguish good behaviour from permissable behaviour. It's all bottom-up design. Whereas HTN is top-down: you build the composite tasks such that they do very specific things together more frequently. It's sort of like real-time behaviour tree construction. Here's some notes from an old AI class I studied many years ago that might help: www.inf.ed.ac.uk/teaching/courses/plan/slides/HTN-Planning-Notes.pdf
