I saw the movie about Davey Crockett in the fifties. I have been fascinated by the Alamo since then. I finally got to see it during leave time from Air Force Basic training in 1968. The bus dropped us off right in front of it. I didn't recognize it. I was expecting to see a building surrounded by sand and scrub brush. But it was in the middle of the city. It was awe inspiring to finally be standing in front of the place where Davey Crockett died. We saw the inside of the Chapel and the artifacts there. It was a solemn and quiet experience. I'll never forget it.

The alamo, that event that my friend told me to never forget, as if we witnessed the alamo.

Santa Anna was not at Gonzales demanding return of the cannon. Col. Ugartechea was in command of the Mexican troops there. True, the colonel was under orders from Santa Anna, but Santa Anna was not present at Gonzales, as he was at San Antonio. Also, what most people refer to as the Alamo is actually the mission's church. The Alamo was the entire compound with walls around it.

This guy made it seem like the entire battle was fought at the chapel which is false. Most people don’t realize that the Alamo was on a open field of walls and long barracks. Most of the original structures are long gone today. Should’ve been more clearer and concise about the actual battle and surrounding areas.

William Barrett Travis was commander of the Alamo. Neill left the Alamo on February 11, 1836 and transferred command to Travis. The battle began just 12 days later.

Col. Neill was not there during the siege. He was called away before Santa Anna arrived with his army.

I don't understand the references on tv shows and movies. Like on TWD when Daryl Dixon says "remember the alamo?", and they immediately picked up the dead guy to shove him out the door and sacrificed his body to distract the walkers so they could get away. Every one immediately knew what he was suggesting, but I never understood why. I've heard it referenced in different ways, but it never made much sense.

It was David Crockett, he hated Davey and never went by it. Texans fought for land. If you check you will find the 30 or 40,000 American settlers there only had a total of 2 or 3,000 slaves total. It was not about slavery it was all about a fresh start and LAND. Land was wealth, independence and freedom. Crockett was the best friend the Indians ever had as he opposed Democrat President Andrew Johnson, who order the forcible removal and relocation of Indian tribes. Please see Trail of Tears. Johnson politically destroyed David Crockett, who at age 49, was forced to try for a new start in what would become Texas. The Alamo defenders were there for a fresh start and land. Where did it come from that they were almost out of ammo, they were not firing for 13 days. The Mexicans insisted everyone become Catholic for starts. 500 more men were a mere 90 miles away for reinforcements. The Alamo defenders expected to be saved.

You forgot the part where they all knew they were going to die cause they were vastly outnumbered but stayed to fight anyway so Houston could capture a Mexican weapons cache giving them the weapons they needed to win the battle of San Jacinto, 200 men held up 2000 for 13 days! also the Mexican government didn't have a liberal immigration policy , they wanted the apache Indians cleared out of that territory but didn't want to fight them themselves so they offered free land to anyone who would "deal with the problem" so to speak, Lastly we have an annual Masonic ceremony at the alamo every March 6th , it's quite the sight to see , y'all come on down.

The battle of the Alamo was fought in the Republic of Mexico in the Mexican state of Tejas. Mexico was trying to free the slaves from the southerner who wanted slavery in Tejas. Mexico knew slavery was inhumane and was fighting to end slavery. The terrorist won and slavery continued, but Mexico is proud to say it didn't continue in Tejas, it now was legal in the New Republic of Texas to own another human being.
