For millennia, we have looked up at the stars and wondered whether we are alone in the Universe. In the last few years, scientists have made huge strides towards answering that question. Comedian and bestselling science writer Ben Miller is in conversation with Jim Al-Khalili, taking us on a fantastic voyage of discovery, from the beginnings of life on earth to the very latest search for alien intelligence.
Ben Miller is a science writer and comedian. After studying physics at Cambridge and beginning a PhD, he left to pursue a career in comedy. He is now half of one of Britain's most popular TV comedy duo, Armstrong & Miller, and a successful actor, but has always maintained a passionate interest in science. He maintains this interest through science writing.

I've got a much more interesting story. I owned a high tech engineering product design and development company for 39 years. I was doing a machine that made large, spy satellite lens mounts for a client when I brought up the subject of UFO's. One of the engineers there had a top secret clearance and was highly intelligent and credible. He told me of the time he came face-to-face with two aliens inside a small UFO about 12 feet in diameter. I was totally taken by his story. I'm 73 now and this was one of the most interesting encounters of a UFO I'd ever heard. I don't think aliens are coming, I believe they're here and have been here for a very long time.

I'm hearing some are shapeshifters... Can switch between human and alien. Also that Earth actually belongs to Aliens and the Moon is their laboratory. They created humans and genetically engineered the race that rules the world by combining monkey DNA, dog DNA & albino DNA.

Finally someone credible. I am almost certain I know how to harness their propulsion meathod. I wish to meet an E.T. in person, but I've seen their craft. They were disks enveloped in bright white coronal discharge. I watched them all night they definitely had a fight with humans. The closer one projected a broad, dim, blue beam from it and lit up a huge plain that reminded me of an A.C.-130. It was night time so I didnt see the plane at first but the beam made the plane go white and POOF the plane instantly disappeared and I felt the thud of it through my floor. A farther one was zipping around in all directions and I watched it evade a volley of what I'm pretty sure were rockets or missiles one of them blew up near it but it didn't seem to do anything to the craft it just kept sipping around in a relatively small area like that. I assume they were shooting up at it to but I was inside and couldn't hear anything. I saw another two way farther above the hills way off in the woods and each one slammed a white ball of what I assume was some form of plasma into the ground and I felt each of those in my feet too even from that huge distance. I slept next to unloaded gun that morning after they zipped straight up and away faster by far than any bullet. well I tried to sleep anyways but I was literally shaking with fear.

IK, r? By now I think most of us have at least seen them. The first time I saw one it actually landed approximately 20 yards from me. So I saw it up close and personal and I really don’t think it was ours. When it took off, it raised up hovering just above an apple tree while switching bright to dim over and over. Then it shot over our heads and back up into the sky within a second it was back amongst the stars where it started from. The only sound it made was the splitting the wind. It left three holes in the ground in shape of a triangle.

Lol. Yes. But we have to be honest about what those claims are. They exist on a spectrum between fraudulent cries for attention and psychotic illnesses. UFO sightings are more innocuous - aerial and light phenomena, optical and atmospheric illusions, and traces of the human instinct to label and explain things that we can't properly identify (but could be with better and more information) Some are tied to UFO cults obviously which is an extreme example of the human search for meaning. All of these say tons about human nature and fallibility. They say next to nothing about actual extraterrestrial life. B

Watched a few minutes thinking this may be a bust, at least for me. FFW bits ahead and watched various parts none of which made me want to come close to investing the time to watch the entire program. In fact, I didn't even bother to watch the last part at all which is a sure sign I can't get anything interesting out of what I've sampled. Literally makes me ask why would anyone read this book by this man. He strikes me as a man who, perhaps, reads various articles about a subject and then shuffles that data among what he must think is his brilliant observations for a book which ends us less than the articles and such he used in the first place. In the internet age everyone can write which makes even fewer worthy to read. Uh, Jim Al-Khalii I thought was a more serious science guy than whatever function he's supposed to be handling here. He can't even bring a sense of importance here.

If you ever go and breakdown the logic they use to dismiss sightings, you end up with an equally or more unlikely story, its funny. As I recall, the sighting was in an era of early aviation; propeller planes... they mastered, in secret, the flying wing AND jet engines... and yet, somehow, not only did he see one, but a squadron... which today we use computers to smooth out the issues of flying wings; to make them not suck. Germany later in WW2, did eventually make confirmed flying wing prototypes...but they couldn't perform as described by the witness... and the USA didn't debute a viable flying wing until the B2... This is all the more funny as they actually show fighter jet recorded videos of craft beyond human capabilities getting outclassed like a bumble bee versus an F-22 Raptor, and proving there exists a craft made with an understanding of the science that is hundreds or thousands of years more advanced, "NO BIG DEAL GUYS, L-O-L, this is just silly! LAUGH WITH ME AT THIS PROOF!" - Neil DeGrasse Tyson... and disregard the many historical accounts throughout history, such as the UFO battle in 1561; google '1561 celestial phenomenon over Nuremberg' and cave paintings of aliens... in a time before science and the wheel and steel, let alone electricity or flying machines, and pre-dating Sci-Fi by many thousands of years! Such accounts and sightings appear throughout history, even before movies came along to serve as a convenient scapegoat for the otherwise "unexplainable" events. *News flash:* Math doesn't lie. The Drake Equation, even the nerfed versions of it, still indicate we are not alone. So, if math doesn't lie, and alien sightings and their craft appear throughout history, and we are said to be made in the image of the gods... and we have genetic proof of aliens via 32 or so scientists PROVING in a well respected PEER REVIEWED biological journal that octopuses and squid are alien lifeforms not originally from earth, unless they time traveled... as well as numerous other things, biological and physical, showing alien life... yeah, seems we are being lied to.

Ben Miller, I think you’re alright. You just need to find your brand for speaking about science. I think this interview could have been greatly improved by having half a dozen very interesting concepts or topics, to cover briefly. Learn them well and find your own reasons as to why it is interesting. Two to three humorous or light hearted concepts or topics. One personal or historical anecdote relating to an interesting concept or topic. Anecdotes about discovery of scientific thinking or interest, as a young child, are great. Don’t worry about the trolls, just keep trying to find your mark. There is no reason to be overly critical of someone who is attempting to communicate science (as long as it’s within the boundaries of good science) Even if there is a book promotion that is tied in, and especially if there is someone who is not a professional science-communicator, presenting it. Anything that directs people to read, learn, think, or want to understand, surely deserves our acceptance even if not as of the highly professional standard which we have been lucky to get from other content creators and presenters.

As we all know, a budding physicist (Ben Miller) is not fully clued up on alien single celled life but he done really well and explained it a lot better than some of the dissentary commenters on here who only believe what fits their pre-conceived answers.

That is weird, I see ufo's all the time. If it flies and you can not tell what it is, then it is a ufo-right! But most likely you just saw light. And that is not evedence of anything like inteligent life, one should not convince themselves with a single event either. One of anything is not verifiable, and is just what it is an unexplained thing. That is normal! We people see unidentifed things all the time, but just because we can not identify them does not lead them to be a nugget of gold either-right! Just a single nomaly or "black swan event". When an alien comes up to you, and flies you around the solar system a few time, and then goes to the world media and as says, "hi I am an actual alien from planet xyz, nice to meet you all." Then and only then can we maybe say, hey look other inteligent life does exists. But math and science will still says we need to verify that information and have more evidence. So yeah take a look up outside a city at night or in a dark area on a clear night likely see many things out there. ET's maybe, be more likely their A.I. robotic probes that they would be using on a planet this dangerous and hostile.

North of lebanon oregon and also seen north of portland oregon so this thing was 180000ft+ but looked the size of three 747s at 35k. Mofon recorded it but took it down later. I was very sceptical about UFO’s until I listened to David Fravor’s experience when he was a US naval Pilot flying off the US Nimitzs in 2004. He was asked to identify an object spotted on radar, when he arrived at the location he’s reported to have seen a Tic Tac shaped white object which when he approached it move in a way that defined our laws of physics.

35:15 "Life only started once." This is a really common misconception. It confuses "All life on Earth seems to be descended from a single ancestor" with "life only started once" Life started on Earth so early it would seem that getting life started is fairly easy. If that's the case, if life started anywhere that the conditions were right for life to start then life would have started in thousands, or even millions or billions of locations. Each starting point would create its own evolutionary line and each line well suited to it's own environment. At first each line would be isolated. You may have more than one line pop up in each environment, but some lines would be more fit than others, and as resources became more scarce those lines that were less fit would become extinct. As environments linked up the competition with between lines would happen over and over until all the environments were linked up. Do something radical, like say ad a bunch of oxygen to the environment and you could extinguish every other line but one. We can see this in history as well. After the Roman withdraw from Britain there were several kingdoms all over. They fought each other, forming alliances and merging until Britain had only 1 monarch.

What's interesting in discussions like this is the search for "intelligent life". Yet before that, what is the definition of the word "life?". Even biologists can't define it! Yet their very subject name bio = life + logos = study of suggests they are studying life yet they fail to define the word "life". Like if I said "here's a book about motorcycles, but I don't know what a motorcycle is" you'd think I was mad. And such a book would go down many worthless avenues. Biology texts are unusually thick. And biology seems to lack the laws found in physics. But one shouldn't take this as a criticism of biology or biologists for physics uses the word "space" and refuses to define it also. We have gravity and we can predict the behaviour of an object within a gravitational field yet cannot offer a single reason WHY gravity operates at all. These are not unknown factors in the sciences but they are not mentioned enough. There remains much work to do in all these fields and perhaps when we do understand them we will conquer space and solve intelligence!

🤔At this point & beyond looking back on this presentation, this serves as a wonderful example of the pitfalls seen time & again in academia when hubris & failure to thoroughly research occurs simply due to "giggle factor" or assumed improbability. As more & more UFO encounters are officially declassified that were witnessed simultaneously by multiple highly trained military fighter pilots while also being scientifically recorded in visual spectrum, infrared spectrum & by multiple radar cross sections of the highest degree, even the most adamant skeptic hold outs have to accept its reality or die off giving way to it. Sadly for over half a century academia willfully ignored a bountiful plethora of various scientific evidence types & multitudes of direct eyewitnesses of the highest caliber simply because the subject attracts liars & con artists. This is the equivalent of doctors refusing to heal the sick because there are quacks who practice & patients who lie. It is the duty of academia & science to actively investigate the unknown, even that which occurs very rarely. If not, the vacuum is naturally filled by laypeople & later con artists & scammers.

Excerpt from the book 22 July 2020 The plant Mimosa Pudica, also known as the touch -me-not plant, is an average height shrub with fern like leaves close to slender branches. When you touch it, leaves flatten against that particular stem only. After two minutes or so the leaves move back to their positions. Is this consciousness or AI? This thing is a living organism that moves sap of living cells in and along arteries to repair damage where necessary . It has a conscious root point, or “musi”, with ability to identify, extract and rearrange molecular and atomic nutrients from soil and atmosphere that are characteristic of that plant only. If you plant apple seeds you get apples, not pineapples, and so on. A stone cannot do that. A computer cannot do that. A humanoid robot or puppet cannot do that. This is possible only where a spark of individual consciousness, or life manifests. This self cannot be produced by chemical compounds in a laboratory test tube. However, notwithstanding the foregoing, I believe a digital computer, as in a humanoid robot for instance, may be able to replicate and multiply its own progressive intelligence ad infinitum, even mimic consciousness, eventually far beyond human comprehension, and by so doing may one day be the ultimate undoing of humans. I stress however, such super intelligence, cannot be real consciousness as we have in living creatures. The future in this reality is frightening. Thanks Elon Musk, I think you may not have it right.
