In this video I will go deep into my hybrid Bikepacking / Bicycle Touring setup and why I think this is a fantastic “All Around” system that will suit a lot of peoples needs. It has taken many years to perfect and I hope that this will provide you a great place to start your own bike bag exploration or it can help you to dial in your current setup that bit better. Enjoy!

Hi Everybody! Bicycle bags are an important staple among adventure cyclists. I have broken down my “all around” bike packing system into, hopefully, easily digestible chunks. Let me know what you think and I am curious if you have suggestions to make this setup even better? Thanks for watching and have a great day, E&M

One thing I find very useful is a large water bag. I usually travel with a 6L MSR Dromedary bag. The benefit compared to a bottle is that it doesn't take up any space when it's empty, and when it's not it just takes as much space as there is water in it. Also, MSR make a few useful accessories to it, like a water purifier that pumps water right into the bag, and a shower kit so you can use the water in it to take a shower. And if I ever need to cross a desert, MSR also makes a 10 liter bag!

Great bags and accessories! I have the 10L which is a bit big so looking at the 6L version for coming expeditions where water is a priority! All the best

If you're cheap like me an empty 4 liter bag from boxed wine works ok for carrying water- tougher than you think. Can also use it as a blow up pillow. Of course they make an 8 liter one too. And it's fun emptying them in the first place.
@petesig93
@petesig93 Жыл бұрын
My 6L MSR Dromedary lives on top of the Tubus Cargo rear rack, between the Ortlieb panniers and under the 30L dry bag. Ideal placement for it as this is a dead-space otherwise. It is just the right width for this place; the 10L is a bit too wide. On less remote tours I carry my spare pair of shoes/Keen sandals in that spot.

@@KowalskiVanishing_Point most likely perfectly strong enough for most situations. The dromedary is most likely overkill for most situations, but it has a few clever solutions. Like it's easy to hang it so gravity will empty it.

I would also give some hints: 1. while buying the waterbottle handlebar puches - LOOK FOR THE ONES with holes at the bottom. Because on an accidental rain downpour water will stay there 2. I would suggest avoiding big duffle bags if you're not going for a long trip. I mean after few months on the road I just sent it back home (it came out that I don't need so much space and gear at all). Cheers
@WheelstoWander

Thanks for the tips! If I upgrade the pouches eventually I will look for ones with holes or perhaps punch in some myself. The way I use my duffel bag it is no nuisance. With filming gear it's nice to have some space to tuck away everything when the weather turns. All the Best

Nice clean set up. Thanks for sharing your new triangle pack. I believe in using what works for the type of journey planned. Some of my gear goes back 50 years and been all over Canada and the States. A few years back I moved my handlebar bag off the handlebars and placed it to the top of the front rack, to lower the center of gravity and allow room for two water bottles mounted to the handlebars. I made a quick release system that allows me to face the handlebar bag forward or backward. and it carries the items I will need for the day. the removeable carry strap allows me to load it with food at a grocery/quickly on my way. I have replaced my bright orange duffle on top the back rack for two dry bags. they become my washing machine on a rest day. Everything carried in the panniers is in a color-coded stuff sack or a zippered cubes of different colors sizes and shapes. Everything has a home to make finding it simple.

Another great video, lots of useful advice as always. Personally I'm not convinced a bikepacking setup is best for me, as I'm usually touring in more populated areas, where security of my gear is important and I need easily removable bags only. However you guys are definitely more adventurous and going to remote areas, so that's not a problem. Great to see that you're on the road again, and am looking forward to your trip videos - looks like Morocco to me?

After watching the video a second time. I understand the advantage of centering the weight on the bike to improve stability. My concern with a triangle bag is how does it affect control of the bike in a powerful cross wind that can push the bike sideways into traffic or off the road. Strong cross winds are always a concern when biking as well as for semitrucks crossing the open prairie of Canada and the USA.
@WheelstoWander
@WheelstoWander Жыл бұрын
That is a good question. We had some really strong winds and I didn't had any problems with being blown off course. That said traffic was sparse and possibly with frequent big trucks I would reassess the situation and perceived minor wind influence would become more serious as danger by traffic increases.

I love my Ortlieb bags - the Bikepacker/Sportpacker cap-lid bags, the Ultimate Six 8.5L, handlebar bag, and the 25 year old Ortlieb 30L dry bag on the rear rack. Framebags have no attraction for me for two reasons: 1. With my narrow knee gait I would be hitting them every pedal revolution, and 2. They would remove the placing of my frame-mounted bidons. When I need extra load-space I tour with an Extrawheel 26" single-wheel trailer.

Looks interesting because I like my handlebar bag but find it a bit clumsy high on the handlebar as it’s usually attached. How do you like it lower?

Yes, it is the KlickFix system! Having the bag lower is really nice while riding, not having it "block" a bit of the view so to speak. A bit harder to get into and to get free of the cables. I put in new (longer) cables just for that. I bit of a puzzle 😉 But it's better this way for me!

Check out some clear tape called "helicopter tape", formerly developed to protect the leading edge of helicopter rotors against chips. They come in different width, stick very well, and are (almost :-) bullet-proof. The tape pretty much disappears when applied. Very useful to protect the frame under straps, the chainstay against chain slap, the bottom of the diagonal tube against rock chips, and at rubbing points where hoses/cable housing rub against the paint.

Thank you so much for such detailed advice on cycling equipment. Very strange, but why doesn't the manufacturer of the in-frame bag make a special visor bar over the snake so that rain water does not get there? This is easy to do and water will not get inside.
@WheelstoWander
@WheelstoWander Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reaction! The zipper is highly water resistant by itself. A visor could perhaps help but I guess it wouldn't be really necessary. All the best

Succes!

Bike packing means different things to different people but I can't imagine myself needing all those bags even in the name of "functionality". The bike must weigh a ton even before you begin filling the bags. I don't think my legs could take it. This may not be on your radar but I think you could get away with half the stuff, even on the remote tours you guys do.
