Sean Fitzpatrick is the next person in the Jersey Tales hot seat as he recounts his career through his old playing shirts. From school rugby in Auckland, to All Blacks captain, he quickly became aware of the expectations to win on the New Zealand side. Plus, he tells us of his experiences at the 1995 world cup, which he considers to be his favourite, and why Nelson Mandela is the greatest person he has ever met!

I love how Sean focuses on the beauty of the 95 World Cup without making some excuse about being poisoned. A few All Black supporters could learn from him, but I guess they would not quite understand the significance of the event.

One of the best AB captains and no 2's. He was not the most athletic but he was so uncompromising and tough. Good on ya Fitzy- even if you are now half pommy!

He’s my favourite all black of all time. Really because of what a great guy he is. When I was young, we went to many blues and all black games and back then you could go down on the field and meet the players after the game. One game I was in line to get a poster from him and some teenage boy stole it out of my hand. This legend saw it, snatched it back off the teen, gave him a growling and nicely passed it back to me with a kind smile. And that is why he’ll always be my favourite.

Living just around the corner from eden park, made it alot more special. A True Blue supporter and am, and will always be a Proud supporter of the ALL BLACKS. Keep Going AB, BRING HOME THE BACON.

A joy to watch him play Rugby. Played Rugby how you're suppose to. Played with heart and with great determination. Played with passion and played with skill. Was also tough, and smart and skillful and didn't make many mistakes. Good team man and leader. The type of guy I would have loved to play along side. The complete hooker. The best of his era. Would thrive in any era.

Aaah, Fitzy. The man who coined just about every classic rugby cliche in post match interviews. Where would we be without "A game of two halves" or "that's test rugby" or "played for the full eighty minutes" or "the boys gave 110%". The great Eroni Clarke once gave a post match interview as captain of Counties Manukau during Fitzy's tenure that was composed ENTIRELY of Fitzy cliches. I wish I could find it somewhere.

A question I've had for a while about jerseys; a lot of teams embroider the game day stats on their jerseys but we don't see it with the AB's is that because they don't do it or is it black on black? which I totally understand if it is.

Would probably agree pre-World Cups but South Africa were out of the picture for a long time. As a Welshman, South Africa are the best now - 4 World Cups out of 8 competed in. Some record.

Gotta admit, I used to laugh when I saw white AB players doing the Haka, but in recent years they've got really good at it and it doesn't look funny anymore. I like how it has helped bind the nation together and bridge divides.

Gary(RSA) here - therein lies the problem "expected" to win.These poor players can't just play to their potential and love the game they have so much "expectation/pressure" on them.When u lose u cnt move on the problem hurt pride,ego sets in then the mourning begins -SAD. Yr haka , Eng formed the "V".Owen smirk p!sed u off , otha teams r up in yr face/challenge.Imagine a team turn their backs(yes they' all get fined) its not disrespect. Just as haka sacred and used to intimidate/fear in the opperstion , the opposition can also get into the AB psyche that's were the opponent has won 51% of the game.Come on AB play for the love of the game - WIN(celebrate) / LOSE(move on) - U r only human after all😉
@azlanrahmat7418
@azlanrahmat7418 2 жыл бұрын
That "expectation" is what make the All Blacks so successful and any team hates losing anyway. To say the All Blacks are sore losers when they lost a match is just not true. That is just your perception. When the All Blacks lose a game, they always have post mortem and learn from the mistakes they made in that game. That's why it's rare for All Blacks to lose back-to-back. Whoever beats the All Blacks will earn the respect from them. I'm sure the All Blacks players really enjoy a good game of footy very much so.

That pressure drives standards and that expectation forces innovation. The fear of losing a match while wearing the black jersey is a great motivator to prepare for a test as best as possible, regardless of opposition. The All Blacks secret weapon for converting pressure into victory, over the last 2 decades - in my opinion - is a man named Gilbert Enoka. A truly invaluable man to NZR. Every sports team needs a Gilbert Enoka. That expectation of success will never go away and has always been there. Dealing with it is just part of the job.
