Volvo claims their all-new Volvo VNL is 90% new and 10% more efficient. In this complete overview and test drive of the new truck, we review every detail that makes this semi-truck newer and more efficient than the previous VNL. At first glance, you'll notice obvious new features such as the new grille and air intake system. But hidden inside is a completely redesigned interior, advanced driver safety features, and a new D13 engine. The all-new Volvo VNL will enter production in late 2024.

Hey everybody, CCJ editor Jason Cannon here. Join me for a closer look at Volvo’s all-new VNL - a truck that is so new that I was among the first people in the world to get behind the steering wheel.
When the VN Series arrived stateside in the mid-1990s, it was a European platform tailored for North American needs, but all that is changing.
For the 2024 redesign of its VNL - a six year developmental process - Volvo went with a blank slate approach. No stone was left unturned and no legacy was too sacred to re-mold. The end result is a truck that Volvo claims in 90% new and 10% more efficient and for you math majors out there, that equals 100% cool.
Let’s start at the front. I didn’t want to like the new grille because I thought the honeycomb pattern was unique. But I can’t do it. I love it. And it’s huge; a key part of aerodynamic and air management system that does three things: Cut through the wind, stay connected to the wind and move the wind, using it to the tractor's advantage. The front hood curvature and extra low ground effects cut through the wind. The sloped windshield and wedge-shaped cab keeps the cab connected to the air, creating a continuous draft alongside the tractor. The aerodynamic roofline and improved under flow moves the wind and hands it off to the trailer.
Do you see that hood scoop? Yes, it’s functional and it and the other air inlets create kind of a synchronized mini-tornado that keeps the engine cool, limiting how many times the cooling fan comes on, while also keeping air attached to the cab.
Duane Tegels, Product Marketing Manager at Volvo Trucks North America, explains.
Inside you’ll find a new versatile bunk styled after a Murphy bed. The rear control panel is consolidated and gives the driver to control practically every function from the bunk area. It can also be synched with the control panel in the front driver display.
VNL also gets an upgraded suspension system designed to keep the driver more comfortable and supported. A new parabolic spring aids stability, while new engine mount bushings keep vibration from the road from coming into the steering wheel.
Volvo’s new VNL will serve as the launchpad for all future powertrain innovations, including battery electric, hydrogen, autonomous and a host of other solutions. And as such, the truck gets a 24-volt electrical system. All that new tech is going to need a lot of power. 24 volt architecture improves the life of all electrical components, reducing battery failure rate, facilitating quicker diagnostics and repair, and a truck auto start feature will start the truck once a low battery is detected.
And, of course, this is a Volvo, so safety is at the forefront. Standard in every truck are Driver Alert Support; Basic Traction Control Support; Electronic Stability; Rollover protection actions; electronic parking brake and alarm; E-call; Pre-Trip Assist; driver airbag; back-up alarm; forward collision warning; lane departure warning; automatic emergency braking (AEB); adaptive cruise control with stop and go; forward pedestrian detection with AEB and stop and go.
E-call is an industry-first feature that alerts 911 when sensors detect a rollover or the airbag deploys.
The new D13 gets a horsepower rating bump up to 500 and 1950 ft-lb torque. Volvo’s six-wave piston will get a seventh wave which provides further directional control of the air and fuel mixture to create even more efficient combustion. The piston height was also decreased and paired with a longer connecting rod to minimize cylinder sidewall pressure, thereby decreasing friction and improving overall performance. The longer piston rod and slightly smaller piston allowed for the integration of a variable displacement oil pump, optimizing oil pressure regulation while minimizing parasitic losses. To minimize heat loss and increase efficiency, complete insulation was added to both the turbocharger and the turbo compounding unit. Internally, the turbo compounding unit refinements include a smaller compressor and turbine wheel, a strategic improvement that enables the system to...

The front springs have apparently been tweaked, but the suspension is fundamentally the same. Meanwhile in Europe, the Volvo FH has had independent front suspension available for a decade. This is disappointing technically, but probably what the North American market wants.

No need to reinvent the wheel, just make the previous platform more reliable and upgrade failure points. Instead of pushing out the same ol garbage until next gen. Owners want less electronic modules to have to pay for, not excessively more which are going to turn the dashboard to a christmas tree. Volvo higher ups need to take their heads out of their arses. 😂😂

doesn't matter, in most cases 500 does the job well enough. 780HP makes sense only for special transport with extra heavy cargo. If finnish regulations state that to haul 76 tonnes you only need 503hp, and it has been proven to work just fine in most fleets, any extra is technically not needed, it's nice to have that extra but unnecessary.

This ad is typical of Volvo truck. All glitz and glamor but NEVER do they address their Achilles heel that keeps them from mounting any serious breakthrough into the North American class 8 market....Reliability of their product and Availability of service and parts. I have owned and operating my own trucks for @ 25 years now and have yet to be swayed to get a Volvo. Their engineering is topnotch as far as safety, comfort & appearance ( especially the 2025 VNL) is concerned BUT I am not paid for how my iron looks but for how it produces ! The scarcity of Volvo service locations and questionable reliability is my biggest concern and in talking with other O/O this is a common and widespread issue. If not for these concerns I would get a VNL in a heartbeat. FYI.....

yes it is. do you know what 18 miles per gallon would means for the price of goods. or let's say that savings was not passed on. this is a heck of a raise to a truck driver. an in many cases a small business. think with that extra money they can invest, more trucks, invest in stocks, bonds, property, or bank the money thereby increasing the amount of money banks can loan out, and lower the interest rates as banks compete for loan customers. Transportation of goods are an economy driver.

Transport costs has been very squezed for years. That's not where the big potential savings are. But sure, everything ads up. 10 to 18 mpg would been a big amount of money in itself, but those savings quickly eaten up by others and consumers would seen minimal to it. 18 mpg for diesel trucks is not of this world, put thats another story. @@gdotone1

ah. perhaps. or maybe there's been no real push on these engineers to make it happen. perhaps the approach to the problem is wrong. how about this. I want to move my 80,000 pounds 1000 miles for 100 dollars of fuel cost. so that allows for all sorts of innovation. 100/1000 so ten cents a mile. 3 dollars / 9 miles = .33 a mile. my thought 10,000 dollars for 100,000 miles. so if you run 100K a year with an making $ 2 a mile... 190K after fuel. think what 3.20 a mile brings in. 310K. 250 days. lol, 8 hours of driving a day, at 50 miles per hour. ah boy, that's almost enough.

After about 75,000 to 100,000 miles. I bet this new Volvo would in be the shop for sensors or emissions control or something else that as broken down, and or stop working. Old semi truck when proper maintained can prob run circles around any new truck. Sure new truck may get better mileage at first. But won’t matter if new trucks is sitting shop Cus emissions issues, or transmission issue or sensors has put truck in limp mode lol. New tech, more sensors, or computer chips and more emissions control, that slow chokes the the engine at some point. You’ll be forced to have that new truck hauled back to the shop with expensive repairs bill. Somebody need to do a test, take bran new semi truck off sales lot then take older rebuilt semi that has been fully fixed up. Then have both trucks do 50k miles/doing jobs and then see who’s still running. I bet old truck will be. 18 speed with CAT c15 6NZ or 3406e or c16. The old truck sure will have some issue. But new truck will be in shop before it even hits 30+k How know this. Cus there videos out there of companies selling new trucks and buying up old semi trucks instead. Cus they tired of def/ emissions issue/sensor issue. They tired new trucks always being in for repairs. Volvo should do old school long nose truck. Them ppl maybe more interested, they could still do some Air dynamics, and still look cool.

Some owner operators / smaller companies might can keep it going with older trucks with less electronics for a while.
