_________
Michael Porter Jr. is a lean and long, silky shooting hybrid forward from Columbia, Missouri that saw his lone year of college basketball go essentially entirely unfulfilled this past year at the University of Missouri under Cuonzo Martin. Porter was originally committed to Washington, where his dad had coached before losing his job and ending up at, you guessed it: Missouri. That's a nice bullet point on the resume for a dad who's job hunting.

So, I played mid major division 1 basketball for 2 years as a 6 foot 5 shooting guard after I had a spinal fusion on L5-S1 and an artificial disc on L4-L5. Obviously, what I had done was far more severe than what MPJ had done but let me share my perspective a bit on playing basketball after back surgery. I went from being able to 360 dunk in highschool to never being able to consistently dunk again and my lateral speed was never the same. I reformed my game from being an all around scorer to being a spot up shooter becasue of my loss of athleticism. However, I was still able to play for 2 more years until an unrelated injury ended my career (body wasn't made for sports apparently lol). Since MPJ is 6 foot 11 and clearly a far superior basketball player and athlete who had a much lighter back surgery, I would assume his chances of making a full recovery and actually improving his body mechanics with top level trainers are pretty high. You only start to run into the real body mechanic issues when they put a fusion in, all they did was shave his disc so it isn't hitting the nerve. He should be able to get into a better stance in the future and be more explosive. In my humble opinion, as long as they did a good job on the operating table and he followed their rehab process, he should be good to go.

Great video and the only thing I would add is that MPj and his father claimed the injury could be traced back to him hurting his back on a fall after a dunk during his sophomore year of high school. I'm guessing he didn't think too much of it at the time and just kept playing without fixing the problem for the next two years, aggravating the injury over time. He was ultimately forced into surgery after he started to experience numbness, the result of pinched nerve from herniated disc.

I’ve had microdiscectomy surgery, the same vertebrae where Tony Romo had his (which is slightly lower than MPJ’s injury). It’s no joke. I’m 10 years removed from surgery now, but I’ve had off & on pain ever since I resumed normal activities. Bottom line the body isn’t designed to not have a piece of your spine missing. Those discs in your spine absorb shock, assist in fluid movements such as twisting, and help keep your spine aligned correctly. Everyone always says “Assuming medical checks out” or “Assuming he’s healthy “ when talking about MPJ. That seems weird af to me. His disc isn’t going to grow back. His back health is permanently compromised. My surgeon told me to never run or jump again and never lift anything over 50 lbs or I’d be 3 times more likely to have another surgery within 5 years... For awhile I was on my physical therapy everyday 45 minutes when I first woke up. MPJ will have to commit himself to keeping his core stronger than 99% of the NBA. Easy to think he’ll do that, but what happens when you hand a young kid like that a couple million dollars? Will he still wake up early every morning to make sure he gets his core work in? My guess is no. Even if he does, Tony Romo put in that work, but then the first little nothing hit in preseason & it ended his career. I wish MPJ the best, but back surgery is no joke.

I'd say that it was reasonable that he fell from in the draft for precisely this reason, but also not all injuries and recoveries are the same. Your recovery and limitations might simply be different than his. Teams have medical professionals to help them make this assertation about his future health.

+ED I’ve been in that boat since January. I can’t take him with a first round pick. I probably can’t take him til after 45th. People really aren’t talking about how deep this draft is, but there will be players to be had all the way up until mid 2nd round this year. I’m not sure I’d project Michael Porter Jr to play over 164.5 regular season games in his career. I definitely don’t see him playing in 500 games. So why take him? Whoever does in the top 10 is going to rue the day!

T-Mac is full of shit. He probably had something wrong with his back, but not a herniated disc. Maybe a bulging disc, not a herniated disc. The discs between the vertebrae in your spine are like a jelly donut. When the "donut" cracks then the jelly (fluid in the disc) leaks out. This can cause the disc to press into the sciatic nerve. That kind of pain is unbearable. The first morning I woke up with sciatic nerve pain I cried. It felt like someone spent all night beating me up & down my left leg with a baseball bat. When I stood up it felt like someone stuck a sword down the back of my left leg, longways. My mind was telling me "Don't bend your leg". For almost a year, I wasn't able to wash my feet in the shower. So T-Mac is full of shit. He didn't have pain like that or he wouldn't of been able to play basketball. There's no fucking way. I've had my hand slammed in a car door before & I'd take that pain over the crap I had to deal with on my lower back & left leg because of my herniated disc.

His finishing ability reminds me a lot of Blake Griffin. That lay-up of his that you showed in the beginning was very BG-esque. As for perimeter play, he could become great. I see shades of T-Mac in his jumper. If he improves that handle, and becomes respectable with it, he very well could be a 20-25PPG scorer. That is, if he manages to stay healthy. Like you said, his posture is extremely wonky, and I really don't like his landing mechanics, either. They scare me, He's a very, very tantalizing prospect, and I think he'll develop nicely - IF he stays healthy. That's a *huge* IF, though.

Good video and EXCELLENT insight. I'm a nuggets fan, and I like MPJ - but I have the SAME concerns. I think he'll (hopefully he gets fully healthy) struggle finding his "role" / "position" playing against NBA pros. Aside from what you mentioned - which I agree with 100%, and I'm sorry if I missed something - he's just TOO SLOW - 1st step, short dribble, and any longer dribble is a steal risk. Hernangomez is a level above him in all these areas - faster, more explosive, better ball handler, etc. Again, I like the kid - but the downside is just so obvious. Not to mention fundamental health concern. Your "posture" remark is spot on - he seems stiff and fragile. Not a good combo.

Fast forward to TODAY: Hows this vid lookin' overall? Seems like he's proved everything positive you said DEAD ON, including the fact he was a bonafide steal at 14 for the Nuggets. His true shooting % over last 7 games is stupid good. His highlight reel in even limited minutes was popcorn worthy. Put on the games he plays 15 minutes or more, and your predictions of All-NBA potential makes you look like Nostradamus. Look no further than games v SAC/IND/CHA, and his latest mixtape v GSW with Steph ringside for MPJ hitting a rainmaker 3 that silenced the Warriors crowd, the bench, and had Curry dumbfounded as Porter jr and Malik Beasley leading a Nuggets team missing 3 starters to massive comeback from 19 down. Id love to see your Then/Now vid. Thanks!

The most troubling problem is his diet. He's a RAW vegan, not just a vegan. This means he basically eats the same as animals grazing in a pasture. He will struggle to keep on weight, and probably repair any tissue that needs repairing in his body. Some people get by on raw vegan diets, I don't think Michael can with his stature and profession.

Nice video. The back surgery is obviously a concern & his posture does seem off like you say. Jared Sullinger had a similar procedure & he was able to play at the next level. His problem was more maintaining his weight, which complicated things with his back. I wish we could have seen more footage of MPJ in College & it’s weird he needed surgery when there was no known incident for the injury. He is long & has the high release like KD, but his shot & handle is def not on KD’s level at that age. Still a good prospect & still see him being a mid lottery pick 5-7.

The herniated disc injury really can mess-up an athlete's entire athleticism. Your back is the center of gravity. I had the same injury for 5 years and had the same surgery. You can't bend down and get low to handle the ball like an elite player, it messes up your gather before your jumper and you can't be really agile at all. When his back heals I feel sorry for those who passed on him. He's been playing injured for 2 seasons.

1. It's about time you did this video. 2. The charity game veggie the surgery of Missouri vs Kansas should be a primary video source against elite competition or Nike Hoop Summit shortly before his college season. 3. Not worried about his handle or decision making when the nba improves that aspect rather quickly. Also let's not forget that this was the #1 prospect over Ayton, Doncic, Bamba, and even Bagley (who some had at #1) 4. Of the players with back injury just keep in mind Joel Embiid. Despite needing to sit a year and heal, which Porter already has, is proving to be worth every patient moment in Philly.

As a Bulls fan I am so conflicted sometimes with this guy. Screw it, draft him if he's there and maybe even if he's not. He underwent a physical last week with the Bulls medical staff, he's confident and he wants to play for Chicago. Hell, I'd move up a spot or aquire him on the spot if we had assets. We'll throw Valentine in or trade Felicio or Lopez for an atrocious contract or both, I just think he's the right fit, I really do, I think he fits best at the 3 position and that in a couple years he'll be where we need him to be by the time the rebuild is over.

When you're done with this series of prospects, you should do a series on young players in the NBA (Donovan Mitchell, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, Ben Simmons, Jayson Tatum etc..). As someone who plays basketball (not at that level obviously), a slipped disc is something that totally alters your game. You're not able to bend over or do any running and jumping without feeling pain afterwards. I had a pinchet static nerve and the pain i felt then (even on painkillers) is a deterrent to me trying anything more physical that a light scrimmage. I seriously doubt (although I wish) he becomes a productive starter, let alone an all star.

The Dime Drop Yeah he definitely has something that you want in a top 5 prospect. But I wouldn't draft him knowing his limitations now. He won't be able to lift heavy objects, any imperfect landing will leave an awkward jiggle in his spine, and he will also be prone to reinjury (which again could take around 6 months to heal up), and that's talking if the surgery and recovery are both successful. Shame tho, the film shows good potential.

From what I’ve heard MPJ himself said he had been living with the pain for some time and wanted it to be relieved so he got the surgery.

The Nuggets, my Nuggets, got a steal at 14! The Nuggets are building a superstar team without having to use free agency!

MPJ plays with LaMarcus Aldridge posture as a wing, posture can be corrected but he didn’t look anywhere close to the same after the surgery

First of all, very fair assessment. Watched a lot him playing in high school. Was very impressive. But with so little college minutes. Is he going to play more college? Think he should.

you were right about him having back issues for a while. he said on ESPN that he's been in pain for a while. He says he feels great now but we'll see. He's either going to be the greatest steal in this draft or the back injury resurfaces. Healthy he's the best scorer in the draft, I hate to make the comparison but the next KD offensively.

A few weeks after my microdiscectomy surgery (my sciatic nerve pain was down my left leg) I started having pain & slight swelling on the right side of my lower back & upper buttocks. It's been 10 years now & it still comes and goes, mostly comes. MPJ just cancelled his Pro Day workout in Chicago because of Hip pain. The journey begins. Take it from someone whose had lower back surgery before, there is no "if he's healthy". He isn't. His back is permanently compromised. He might can still play, but he'll never be the athlete he was before the surgery. His disc isn't going to grow back.

Kyle uses Adobe Premiere Pro for the video. I'm not sure what he uses for audio.

I am really in step with you on Porter. Do you see any similarities with his jumper as Lonzo Ball? I feel he may struggle because of how low he brings the ball down. It is also isn't a super repeatable stoke. I am very hesitant, but I don't think he will slide past 7, but I don't think he will go in the top 5. Just too much risk and we see how far that can set you back if you miss on a pick in the top 5. Great content as always!
