After suffering from IBS for over 10 years, I've been on the FODMAP diet now for over a year and a half and it's had a dramatically positive effect on my life. I want to share that with you. My aim is that at least one other person sees this video, tries this diet and that it has the same effect on them. In this video I walk through the diet in layman's terms, talk about substitutions you can use and give some tips on products that I've found in that last year some of which have been real hidden gems.
Remember that you should only really do this diet with the help of a trained dietician.

Having waded through a dozen fodmap KZfaq channels now, and become disillusioned with the very idea that I could see the diet through, at last some sensible, straightforward information and advice. No food fadiness or vegan overtones, just blissful common sense. If you are still out there, 7 years on, thanks so much!

Thank you VERY VERY much for this helpful and supportive video! I've suffered for over 60 years with undiagnosed IBS type symptoms and I'm just now following the fodmap diet and it's making a difference already in the first few weeks. I would eat cardboard if I thought it would help, so the low FODMAP diet is a breeze. My thanks to science and to people like you who take the time to share your knowledge, experiences and very helpful suggestions. All the best.

I would recommend getting an intolerance test. After suffering for over 2 years my doctor advised me of the Fodmap diet. I tried with let's say mixed results from the diet and medication. After reaching a low point I went for an food intolerance test and was told it was gluten I'm intolerant to. When discussing this with my doctor he explained that the allergy test they do wouldn't necessarily have picked it up as allergies and intolerance are different. Any ways. Since cutting out all gluten I feel so much better and suffer far less than I used to. Hope this helps anyone who took the time to read. I wish you all the best.

You can make garlic infused oil beceause fodmaps dissolves in water, not in oil or fat. So if you cut some garlic up in not too small pieces, fry them up in oil and then remove the garlic, the oil will not have any fodmaps in it. Thanx for the video :)

Thank you for making this video. Excellent references & links to great sources!! I will pass this on to anyone I know who is suffering. I began the LFM diet in April '19. The results were almost instant- in a good way! I was so surprised to be able to eat any veggies or fruits! Due to crc cancer treatment my gut stopped absorbing nutrients after 5 yrs NED. I was very strict with myself and did the elimination phase, testing and re-challenging is ongoing forever. It's so easy to get off track. I'm still working very hard on that. Yesterday ate at Subway. Been up since 1am doing all my emergency remedies (gut woke me up w/unspeakable suffering) so my day today is not a complete loss!

I wont tell the story because we are all here for the same reasons Im sure but yea over a year 1/2 of doctors with creams + pills or telling me I had nothing... to finally find I had IBS by myself. There was a lot of stress in my life but I knew I had to change something I was doing wrong and this is finally it. I feel so wrong right now and thats everydays... im only 24 im trying my best at work & always feel tired.. didnt really know why but now I know exactly how to manage it. AGAIN THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE!!! Im low on money but as soon as I get money this week Im starting a fresh & healthy life. Im so happy :)

Hey bud, this is so good to hear. In terms of money I don't think it needs to cost you lots to do this. I would invest in the app (to help you manage it) then print off some lists of food you can and can't eat for the fridge. Don't worry about buying expensive gluten free food. Just get good quality meat and veg (that you're allowed) and stick to that. Good luck :)

Hi Alastair, thank you so much for this fantastic video. Our son Andy who is 21 years old has been suffering for almost a year now and has recently discovered that his problem is IBS. The doctors he has seen so far have more or less told him that there is not much that can be done. Andy discovered your video on Wednesday and suddenly he is very upbeat about the whole thing. Hearing your story about how this diet changed your life has really given him hope. He already has your 'no foods' and 'yes foods' list up on his fridge. He is currently in a flatshare as a student at Nottingham University... and would you believe studying Food Sciences ! ... so who knows, this might even have an impact on his future professional activity ! I am French and my husband is English and we live in Bordeaux in France. We have started watching your other videos and we like them very much. The content, the style and the video editing are all fantastic. It is also inspiring to see how you created your own company and how you encourage other people to do the same through your genuine enthusiasm ! All the best Alastair, Cheers, Muriel and Gordon

Utterly brilliant video, not sure if you know but the university named in this prog now has an app, which is quite easy to follow. A tip I have is that I make my own stocks and freeze them in ice cube bags. Bagged a Sunday dinner chicken carcass off my brother in-law at the weekend.(much to everyone's amusement.) So nice to hear tips from someone who has been following the diet for sometime. Thanks for inviting us into your home you are inspirational. Thanks for posting.

Really enjoyed this. Have recently been recommended this diet by my doctor after many years of digestive problems. Had never heard of it before...he had to write it down for me to research! Think I will order the book you recommended too. My last "ordinary" Sunday lunch today and I start tomorrow!

Hi Kay, great to hear. Really don't worry too much about what you'll lose. Immerse yourself in the substitutions and it doesn't have to be as bigger deal. Its not easy out and about but at home it really can be like for like in many cases.

Brilliant video so glad you've cured yourself. My daughter has just been prescribed this diet by the NHS. They now specifically say it's not a completely "gluten-free and lactose-free diet and you should be fine with the normal much cheaper rice crispies, oatmeal, oat cakes, butter and cheeses.

You have made this so easy for me to understand, and the doctors in the USA my home thought I was crazy, until I did all the breath tests and endoscopies. I need your frige lists, and yes my cat had my last milk. I used to love to cook anything and eat anything...now relearning..Thanks man. john h

Dude I love this video. I have a short attention span and I really watched this whole thing through, not skipping anything, even took some notes. This is really helpful, thank you so much-I can’t wait to try these products and get started with low FODMAP because the IBS thing has had such a negative impact on my health, just life in general. I’m a new subscriber so I’m not sure if you’ve done so already, but if you haven’t, could you make one of those “what I eat in a day videos”, or meal plans? If you’ve done this or something similar then just drop the link. Thank you for your time and this video!! 👋💌

Fantastic video man! I've been dealing with bad "IBS" issues for my whole life, but they've gotten to the point of being almost unbearable the past 2 years. Got a handful of testing done over this time and everything comes back negative, so my doctor is convinced it's all just from stress of school, anxiety, and just IBS. I've been lactose intolerant most of my life. Going to try a gluten free diet starting in a few days and see what happens, in the case that it doesn't help me I have been looking into FODMAP as the next step I take. Tons of great information in this video. Glad you're doing so much better now!

Erik, thanks so much for the comment - it sounds like your story is very similar to mine. I cut out Gluten too but still found I was having a lot of trouble. The big changes for me have been Onion and Garlic alongside the lactose and gluten, I really recommend cutting them out too if you can. Good luck bud - let me know how you get on :)

Great video. I was losing my way as I had moved and lost my information from the dietetics department. Just about to telephone them to resend it to me. Knew this information but started to try things I know I should not. Your video made me feel positive again. Keep going do more. By the way you can use chives in place of onions. I found that on another video. They do really work. I am going to try the spring onions the green part. Sometimes when I get fed up that's when I have something I should not but its not worth it.

Great video, Thank you merry very much! I found another fabulous substitute for garlic, a pricey though (for special occasions is perfect). It is anchovies. Olive oil, lemon juice, mustard (crap free), maple, salt, anchovies mushed and stirred together make wonderful salad dressing. With that bite you missed.

Excellent video. I've had IBS since I was 28. I am now 77. They called it spastic colon here in the USA back then. At first I only had an attack maybe once or twice year, and not a bad one. As I have aged it has come on more and more often and now the attacks are major. I am new to the lowfodmap way of eating but it is really helping! I can eat a little bit of regular bread, but just maybe one slice a day. A teeny tiny amount of onion in a recipe...like a teaspoonful minced very fine. I use lactose free milk but am able to tolerate 1 tablespoon of heavy cream in my coffee each morning. I havent seen lactose free cream here in my small community but will be on the lookout. No lactose free cheese either but I can handle a small amount of cheddar cheese Thanks for the great info. I'm also a diabetic so that makes things twice as hard. Have to stay away from sugars. .even honey and maple syrup but liquid pure stevia is my go to sweetener.

Same here. 72 here and when I was in my 20s was diagnosed with spastic colon. Never had it explain to me what it was and so I went on my merry way. Fast forward to the last six years and the myriad of symptoms from this IBS it’s pretty much overwhelming. Just started the FOD map three days ago and already my belly is a little bit flatter. This is not meant for a long-term diet however and it’s only meant to do long enough to heal the gut. Given that, I’m sure eliminating most of these things would be better in the long term. I think years of IBS does it damage that may be irreparable. I know that it causes leaky gut syndrome, SIBO And can cause chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.
