We're really just understanding the complex world of microbes that exist on and in corals. The more we learn, the more there is to learn! Many of the bacteria, viruses, and fungi that we've found serve useful purposes in the coral microbiome. Once we figure out what they're doing, we can start to hand craft probiotics to solve problems like temperature related coral bleaching or even the toxins released in an oil spill.

This video presents the basics of what we know, and how we're planning on using that knowledge to help save the world's coral reefs. What we can use on a wild reef, we can also use in our reef tanks - so this is research worth paying attention to! Acropora or other SPS corals suffering from RTN/STN could one day be treatable directly - we might not need to frag a coral anymore in a few years to save it from the advancing infection.

Abstract
The use of Beneficial Microorganisms for Corals (BMCs) has been proposed recently as a tool for the improvement of coral health, with knowledge in this research topic advancing rapidly. BMCs are defined as consortia of microorganisms that contribute to coral health through mechanisms that include (a) promoting coral nutrition and growth, (b) mitigating stress and impacts of toxic compounds, (c) deterring pathogens, and (d) benefiting early life-stage development. Here, we review the current proposed BMC approach and outline the studies that have proven its potential to increase coral resilience to stress. We revisit and expand the list of putative beneficial microorganisms associated with corals and their proposed mechanisms that facilitate improved host performance. Further, we discuss the caveats and bottlenecks affecting the efficacy of BMCs and close by focusing on the next steps to facilitate application at larger scales that can improve outcomes for corals and reefs globally.

I love your channel man, you talk legit science. Not to name any names but most channels these days are just watching brs and straight copying what they say and making the same cookie cutter videos. I'm sure we've all seen the same videos 20 times over after brs comes up with something new.

I know this is an old video but, The importance of the microbiome in our systems is becoming more and more apparent. that's why I think it's very important to those bacteria as a maintenance program to protect or coral from diseases and viruses.

Wow, really enjoyed the video. Mapping the microbiome was a topic on last summer’s virtual MACNA. A few companies have started offering microbiome mapping services like AquaBiomics.com. I’m thinking about trying one just out of curiosity. Could be a game changer for the long term health of our corals. Thanks for the video!

That's an interesting service! That's basically how they find them "in the wild" too - screening coral, getting rid of known or suspected pathogens, and studying the rest.

Hey ReefMan. Love the videos! Keep them coming. I sent an email to you on the 7th. I just wanted to make sure you received it and that it didn't end up in a junk mail filter. I understand if you just wouldn't be interested at this time.

Super interesting I can see a future where we see X problem in our corals and that means we need to dose Z bacteria or other microbe to solve the issue, it would be interesting to see how research develops and how it could be brought to market in something other than just blacket dosing all the microbiotics. I believe its more powerful just dosing specific types you need to solve very specific issues and dosing them all doesn't really change the overall balance, or atleast that's my 2 cents 😂
