I agree with everything you said. Batman's combat system revolves around strategic thinking and gadgets or etcetera techniques to handle special threats- that's what Batman does. Spider-Man only needs to do that against super villains because he can toast goons with ease. I think the combat system of Web of Shadows worked pretty well; it was just a basic combat system with a bunch of aerial attacks and wall attacks thrown in. The crimes were a nice idea because lack of variety in side missions is the primary problem that's plagued the Spider-Man series. But I think Yahtzee hit the nail on the head: you shouldn't be FORCED to do them, let alone so frequently.

Thanks. It's sad in the first place that the only unique mechanic they could think of was a time limit forcing you to do the side-missions; it's even more sad that the one unique mechanic they could think of is one of the worst parts of the game.

That does seem like a fairly apt comparison. I have not reviewed or played Hatred, but I've heard it's just an astoundingly mediocre and over-hyped game that was cloying for controversy and nothing else.

I played Shattered Dimensions. I think that game is really only good for one 100% run; the game's writing and visuals are great and very entertaining, but the combat is very simple and monotonous. I played the game to 100% completion and the combat is so repetitive that I haven't been able to bring myself to finish another full playthrough since. I really don't find there's much distinction gameplay-wise between Amazing, Ultimate, and 2099 Spider-Men outside of Ultimate's rage mode, which makes for satisfying smash-everything-in-sight mosh pits. The voice acting and visuals is the only major distinction between those three. I try telling myself that Amazing Spider-Man has more ranged attacks and 2099 Spider-Man is more agile, but I play the exact same way regardless of the character. I like Spider-Man Noir's levels and they're decent gameplay-wise, but the AI is a little too quick to go back to its old patrol pattern after you shake them. That AI quirk makes the stealth levels much easier. I really like the Hobgoblin, Deadpool, Scorpion, Goblin, and Sandman levels, and the Doc Ock 2099 level really gets on my nerves. My fondness for the 2099 levels is largely due to the scenery; I just eat it up... maybe it reminds me of Batman Beyond. I have not played Edge of Time, but it's at the library when I feel like giving it a whirl. I get the feeling it's the same gameplay (which is why I skipped it) but I hear that the story is quite interesting

Um... you can rip enemies' guns out of their hands? I think it's the same aside from the special enemies are different: you have to web pull quick enemies, web-shot armored enemies, shockwave attack heavy enemies, and web yank glider enemies. Apart from that it's the same combat.

I didn't hate the game, but the game is- if you don't mind me saying and in my most humble opinion- VASTLY inferior to its predecessors (except maybe the first Amazing Spider-Man), has a dull story, and is also vastly inferior to the game that it is very blatantly ripping off (Batman). Because of these things, it doesn't have much to offer or much reason to buy it when we could just play those predecessors again and have a much better time doing so. Not to mention the sole innovation from its predecessors- the Petty Crime system- is implemented so poorly that it seems custom made to get on your nerves. But I'm glad that somebody really likes it.

I don't think it's the best that award goes to the original Spider-Man 2 but I don't think it's as bad as its reputation is. I think the game is just too easy and the story has its flaws like the movie

I enjoy it, but a lot of people find it repetitive. The story- in my opinion- is very good. It's a slow build-up to the symbiote invasion and the city devolves into chaos so quickly; it's like controlling a superhero in the middle of a zombie apocalypse that you can't save everyone; all you can do is desperately try to save everyone you can. I find the story and atmosphere immersive, even if Spider-Man's voice actor is... annoying. The combat is excellent- you're not tied down to using combos; Spider-Man does attack in combos, but there's no delay between them, so you can go from attack to attack to attack very fluidly and fight on walls and in the air with no interruptions. I find it thrilling. Plus the web swinging is still fun as always. The game has some balancing issues; late in the game you unlock a massive tentacle attack with the Black Suit that just obliterates everything around you and that's all you'll use in combat. The bosses are epic in scale but most of them boil down to using the web strike over and over to kill them. The game has four endings depending on your black and red suit alignment, but the ending you get is determined by the story choices you make, not how much you use one suit over another. I would've preferred more integration between story and gameplay there. Also the game does not have any side-quests aside from going out and fighting more enemies- since enemies infest the overworld outside of story missions too.

Edge of Time I haven't played but I have played Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time is more of that. Shattered Dimensions is 3/4 God of War and 1/4 Diet Arkham Asylum. Pretty fun for one playthrough and very creative, but after I got 100% completion I just got bored when I've tried to play it again since. Haven't played Friend or Foe but I think that's a fairly basic Beat-em-Up too.

The dialog system was completely pointless. It made absolutely zero difference to the game if you selected all of the options or if you just ended the conversation without answering any of the questions. It was only there to make the game seem like it had more depth than it actually did and to do several info dumps while disguising it as gameplay.

I think there's another section in that document that says that by buying the game, you give Activision the infinite, unquestionable, universe-binding right to butt-rape, incinerate, commit, decapitate or drown you (including waterboarding), in addition to the right to foreclose your house(s), have you fired from your job(s) forever, isolate you from your family and make you play nothing but Superman 64 for 3-5 years on end. Wow; that price drop didn't take long. My favorite is probably Web of Shadows. On a technical level Spider-Man 2 (the Tobey MacGuire one) is probably a better game, but Web of Shadows feels like a much more polished experience. Sadly I think you're correct; though to be fair the next Amazing Spider-Man movie isn't due out until 2018; Sony is planning on doing Sinister 6, Venom, and "unnamed female character" (aka Black Cat) movies in the meanwhile; assuming those don't tank anyway.

I see your point, but aside from the final boss being Carnage (which most people will figure out Carnage is in the game as soon as his name is mentioned) I think everything I mentioned either takes place early in the game or is so inconsequential to the story that it doesn't matter too much (i.e. the stuff with Electro and Green Goblin)

I miss the days when EA and Activision published good games and let developers work laissez faire. I guess the growing popularity of gaming back in 2005 got to them?
