From a simple seed grows a mighty tree. This storied American Elm bonsai - planted, cultivated, and styled by Arthur Joura - resides as a legacy of The North Carolina Arboretum's approach to naturalistic styling. The demonstration process, recorded in March of 2019, was temporarily put on hold until now in 2022. We hope you enjoy this masterclass and unique approach to a living story, and if able, please take the time to visit The Arboretum in Asheville, NC to witness its beauty in person. I have seen a lot of bonsai youtube videos. But this is hands down the best I've seen. Really nice editing and Arthur is so well articulated. I would love to hear him elaborate on his philosophies.

If you ever have the chance to visit, he's always there. Additionally, the North Carolina Arboretum has a weekly Curator's Journal that Arthur writes. It's wonderful! Currently, it is by subscription, but there may be a day when it will be free to the public.

Found you’re channel thru a podcast wormhole, you mentioned gathering some yamadori vaccinium , farkleberry/ sparkleberry. Wouldn't that be something!! I've only ever see English chestnut and Allegheny chinkapin bonsai. However, the leaf size is really large. Gotta get one that's just like this elm to keep it in proportion - aka, big!

I always enjoy listening to Arthur talk about bonsai and watching him work on trees. He talked about a soil mix for bonsai but didn't mention what he was using. It looked like a fair amount of organic, maybe pine bark. Do you know what his mix is Ben?

It's a mix of pine bark, peat moss, and Stalite. He didn't give the mix because it isn't as important as what it does, which he does mention. The materials he uses are local and can be bought in bulk by the Arboretum. That makes it easy to acquire. If you've got something close and cheap that works well, that's what should be used. I use different for mine, because I can buy it local and cheaply.

First amazing examples of elm tree's.. my question is why not wood hardener? Wood burning be sufficient for Preserving the wood and would it hurt to do both?

Both are done. The wood burning is to get rid of the loose fibers and fine tool marks from carving. Once time has weathered a little more, an acrylic wood hardener is used to preserve the look.

I believe he uses a wood hardener. I think an acrylic based one.

I don't know the model number, but it's called a die grinder. Loads of bits to help carve wood.

How different is the fire treatment from something like Sho Sugi Ban? It seems surprisingly similar, and I expect it has similar benefits (the heat converting resins in the wood into something that resists insects and rot).

It's not a full char like with the shosugiban, but it does remove the softer wood (spring/summer growth) and leaves the harder wood (autumn/winter growth), and all with nice rounded soft edges (much like natural weathering). I don't know about the resins in the wood, but I could see it with pines, junipers, and other conifers. This elms doesn't really have much of what we'd call resin.

His mixture is sifted pine bark, Stalite Permatill, and a dash of peat.

I have 3 American elm trees that I harvested out of my backyard. I let mature just before getting woody and then potted them. They are only 2 years and do not look as great as yours.
