Even though the German spring offensive is not able to gain any ground in Flanders, the allied casualties are mounting. This increases the pressure on John J. Pershing and the American troops in Europe to finally join the battle.

The Top Brass always knew the British Empire liked to be the Puppet Masters, and loved to wag the American dog at will. The Aristocracy hasn't stopped, even to this day, as referring to the USA as "The Colonies". The sooner the Malthusian, decrepit and diabolical British Empire is smashed the sooner civilization of the world will be safe from the Degrowth Primitives.

Yeah, Verdun has a very low player count and unfortunately Tannenberg is doing even worse. Verdun used to be around 300, 400 players but since two or three months it's been down to 150 or so, with hardly more than 200 at peak. Tannenberg had somewhere around those numbers in the launch months and is now down to something like 40 or 50 players.

Question for Out of The Trenches: What did Gavril Princep think of the war during his incarceration? Did he still think he had freed his people? Was he horrified at the huge loss of human life? Great show as always!

Pershing was smart. Neither the French or British wanted to split their forces to shore up the others line. He was also right about looking to the future. His biggest mistake was using the same tactics Europe was using since 1914 and lost a lot of lives. They should have put a sign outside of headquarters, caution slow generals playing.

The thing is he didn't use 1914 tactics. He may not have been a tactical genius, but it's fallacy to say the Americans had learned nothing from the preceding four years. Pershing's main problem is he wore too many hats for too long. He didn't delegate authority fast enough.

CJ Not that he learned nothing but the tactics used primarily for 1918 were the same as tactics of their contemporaries. They all learned along the way but they continued making blunders. It was common. The Navy fought against aircraft being produced post war just to protect their budget. Took a long time for them all to get on board. Actually it still goes on. The Navy and the Marines see no need for the Army and Airforce.

57WillysCJ That's BS. As a former Marine I can tell you the Marines have an entirely different mission than the army. We can't do what the army does, we aren't built that way. And the army can't do what we do. And the other 3 branches could never replace the Air Force.

It would be kind of interesting to know how Princip viewed the war. Did he think he was partly responsible for it? Possibly feeling a bit guilty about it, or not guilty at all. Or maybe he just saw his actions and the war as two seperate things

As Spring 1918 goes on German strategic and operational blunders continue. They continue a failed operation "to Show something for their effort" This is not military strategy . This is a policy for a bankrupted business.

Huh, I never asked myself what happened to Princep after the assassination. I guess I assumed he was swiftly executed in the early days or the war, if not before then. I never guessed he'd be alive in an Austrian prison for most of the war.

in principle I'd say he was wrong and he was wrong to think the war would continue in 1919 (but everyone was tbf) but he was right about not overreacting to the Spring Offensive like the other Allied leaders did and he obviously knew his army better than they did

The biggest concern as I have understood it is that the other allied leaders would use the hardly trained Americans as cannon fodder more or less and I can understand not wanting to be responsible for that. At the end of the day, the war wasn't America's problem

@@johngalvano5895 Everyone thought the war would continue into 1919. That wasn't something that just Pershing believed. As for "in principle I'd say he was wrong", that's just nonsense. He didn't want to send under trained soldiers into battle against highly trained and battle hardened enemies, and he didn't want to separate a huge part of his army and spread themselves super thin the way the other allies wanted and had done with horrible consequences. He made a smart decision. He was completely right to do so.

Question of Out of the Trenches: In a recent video there were pictures and footage of moterbikes with Lewis guns on them, but not much explanation of what they were or what they were for. I want to know everything about them.

@Optimus Princeps Bob Boblington You need a spin off channel that is made specifically for people like you. Look up C&Rsenal on youtube. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNKjeNB2mtaxYWQ.html . They cover what it was used for. They specialize this niche for viewers for the Great War show. They do it very well too. I hope I have helped. What I can say to save your time is, the lewis gun was mostly utilized as a weapon on vehicles. (Planes, bikes, and etc.) One area the American developers got feed back the European power potential customers was the fact it showed some promise as a gun on planes. (The lewis gun is in fact an American invention.) The lewis gun from what I hear mostly got used as a fighter plan's mounted gun for Britain and various other nations. Most of the people that used it were other nations other than the U.S. They never really used it. In the early years it almost got adopted as the U.S.'s machine gun, but it encountered a figure in the military causing resistance . The link I showed covers more about it.

We didn't need to join the Krauts on the ground. All we needed to do was invade Canada, impose blockade and work with the German Navy at sea. Such actions would have ended the war early, saved the self contained, glorious, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and put an end to the wicked British/French empires.

Can you guys mention more stuff from the smaller countries, having watched all the episodes I have noticed that since the beggining of the Russian revolution you stopped paying so much attention during your regular episodes to the smaller countries. Heck I think the last time Bulgaria was even mentioned was back in august of 2017. Love the show though! One of the best on the whole site!

Princip is a hero for all Yugoslavs not just Serbs. There are many songs devoted to him and the best ones (in my opinion) was by Bosnian muslim Safet Isovic. Its just people here built such a beef over the last 30 years that everyone except Serbs restrain to praise him openly, he was one of the many things that held us together.

He was just a dumb kid who lit the match over gunpowder covered Europe. He didn't cause all the millions of deaths. But he did accelerate the time of their deaths. So he is guilty that millions of young men died months earlier than they would have otherwise.

Pershing's insistence on having an independent U.S. Army appears to be the same as Sir Arthur Currie's insistence on having an independent Canadian Corps during this time. Rather than let their troops be dispersed as canon fodder for other generals, they want their own cohesive commands serving clear objectives. I would guess that Allenby is also feeling this way in Palestine right now.

andre borges this makes absolutely no sense. King Carlos I died in 1908, 6 years before the outbreak of The Great War, 8 years before Portugal joining the war. Thus, the first republic started way before the war, and had nothing to do with it. The dictatorship you speak about started in 1933, 15 years after the end of the war, way closer to WWII than WWI.

I read a book years ago about the flying aces of WWI. The author said that many allied pilots flew and dropped flowers in respect of the Red Baron during his funeral. Just seems odd with all the slaughter occurring there seems to be little flickers of humanity.

@TheWalkingPed93 Yes. Here's the thing though. Just because you see a person doing it doesn't tell you enough. It leaves out the info of how often they done it, how well it is at doing that action, and how many actually done it. From what I hear it's not best suited for carrying it around and utilizing it like a B.A.R. It was still kind of hefty. It wasn't impossible to do. It's just you're going to be slower, and more prone to be winded than a person using a B.A.R. (Don't imagine in your head a person can use that thing like cqb like a smg and be very quick and outmatch every person you engage that uses a smg. You're going to be sluggish, and feel cumbersome from its weight after a while.) It’s actually kind of amazing that Pershing actually showed that he at least didn’t want to squander American lives needlessly. Seems like one of the few generals in this war to do so.

I'm pretty sure that history has shown Pershing to be correct. He did not want our troops wasted using European tactics which were now known to be outdated. Also, they needed time to train for the conditions in Europe, and for new tactics. Also, very likely our troops fought better under their own leaders and command structure than they would have for faceless European generals who persisted in using antiquated tactics. Our troops probably would have been placed alongside Allied troops in company sized units, negating our organization and command structure. The troops would not have felt like they wre fighting for America. That would have negatively affected their fighting spirit. There is a reason why Pershing was the only living man ever promoted to the rank of General of the Armies (yes plural, the theoretical sixth star).

Isn't it crazy how the war ends in 6 months but everyones still gearing up for full scale combat, the germans seemingly stronger then ever having ended the Russian threat. Its nuts. This war is nuts.

My grandfather lost 3 uncles in WW1. One of the 3 came home but died within 1 year. He lost his mind due to German Gas and died while undertaking Medical Care in Georgia.

My great grandfather wass one of those pulled out of the middle east and returned to the western front. in resisting the german assault mounted infantry and cavalry had provided much covering support and so cavalry was being used again in europe. a note to indy and crew, a large number of the 'british' troops now in allenby's army were in fact from India. Far from home fighting for the empire these professional soldiers are often overlooked for their contributions. As for Gavrilo, never was a death so richly deserved. though in Sebia, he's seen as a national hero for acting for 'greater serbia' the same cry that led to countless atrocities in the 1990's in places with names like Bosnia.
