HipHughes covers the basics about one of the weirdest election the U.S. ever had. Four candidates, a lazy incumbent, a relative newcomer, an old Socialist and a pissed off Teddy Roosevelt. And for the record TAFT was not Teddy's Vice President, he was his Secretary of War (Thanks Hayden Gordon)

I am challenging any and all Trump supporters to make the intelligence choice and research this mad man. If you really think he cares! Think again. We have the world at our finger tips, would it not behoove you to look up his history. I am sure most will be shocked. Ask about his wealth, his dodging the draft, the "ECONOMY" ask for the graft that shows the economic standing for the last 3 presidents. You will see that it was O'bama that signed a stimulant in 2010 to jumpstart the ECONOMY. That is why it got better. Not because of Trump. Remember, ask and ye shall receive and come out and be ye separate in the words of Jesus.

@Matt Dixon I can tell you're pretty smart and totally not head headed but here we go. 18 U.S. Code 872 for extortion when he commented to the Ukrainian president "i have a favor to ask you THOUGH". He didn't abide by the congressional budget and impoundment control act so sorry bud but that's breaking the law. And let's slap him with a 2 U.S. Code 192 because his bitch ass refused subpoenas. There's people all around him that are going to jail but people like you boggle my mind thinking he's done nothing wrong. It comes a point when you cretins have to ask yourself, "what if Obama did this?"

Right...and a chronic liar with 16,000 misdemeanors. Threatening a US ambassador? I believe this was added because some people are unfit and unable to realize that when they are elected, they represent A COUNTRY....not just their own interests and their howling followers who cannot see how he is attacking checks and balances, which were put into place to avoid having a king. The courts are being packed, and the gerrymandering voting districts are putting any idea of the US being a progressive country into the toilet. Encouraging countries on live TV to investigate a private citizen and inviting China and Russia to get involved is simply not behaviour befitting the dignity of the office. Threatening to shoot someone on the street and get away with it is inexcusable...I don't care how well anything else is going. I think the fact that he has the Republicans in line shows how afraid and cowardly they are, that or so greedy they have no principles. A trial with no witnesses? Cowards. I will work to see every one of them is dumped, gerrymandering or not.

Hip. The reasons for the acquittal are as follows. 1. Presidential succession at the time would have meant Benjamin Wade would be President. No one wanted Wade as President. 2. The House manager bungled the trial by showing no decorum to Johnson. Benjamin Butler talked about treating Johnson as a common horse thief. 3. Republicans were clearly afraid that the impeachment process would backfire on Grant. 4. During the trial, several Republican senators met with Johnson and they agreed that if he was acquitted they'd let him fire Stanton and replace him with General Schofield. They agreed and that was that

Excellent, but misses the point about why Johnson and Stanton clashed. President Johnson was refusing to enforce the laws passed by Congress over Johnson's vetos. Stanton was using the War Dept to undermine Johnson's efforts to resist Congress's plans for reconstruction. Is short, Johson was what would later be known as a segregationist. Grant as Commanding General of the United States Army did what he could to enforce the law and Congress's plan for reconstruction but denied this to Johnson. At the time Grant was the most popular man in America. Johnson had the worst political tin ear imaginable. Johnson took Grant on his speaking tour in the hope of being associated with Grant's popularity but instead during this ill conceived circle about the country, Grant received rapturous ovations and was the center of attention everywhere they went, while the president got tepid applause if he was lucky. Stanton was a tough as nails, determined, totally committed m_____f_er. He knew how to give orders, he didn't suffer fools AT ALL. He brilliantly brought the massive, chaotic War Dept. bureaucracy that had grown with the huge procurement effort under control. A telling example of his skills: to solve a troop movement problem he proposed moving 90,000 troops with horses and supplies by train into Tennessee very quickly. He worked in his office for nearly 3 days without sleep issuing telegrams commandeering trains. It was a brilliant idea and it worked. Johnson, wanting Stanton out sought to put Grant in the job in order to keep Grant as his potential opponent in the next presidential al election under his control. Johnson was almost certainly the worst president ever. I am always amazed when historians list the best and worst presidents and don't have Johnson at the very bottom. I thought his crimes were greater than defying the Tenure of Office act. There were numerous bills passed by Congress OVER HIS VETO that he chose to disregard rather than enforce, CONTRARY TO HIS OATH OF OFFICE? Maybe I'm missing part of the story but I see his offenses as more than political. I assume he survived by one vote because the vote counting Senate leadership wanted to keep him in place but weaken him as much as possible. I'm sure favors were offered, threats made etc. to get the Senate vote to exactly one short of the needed 2/3.

The shadow foreign policy was there to help Trump attack a political rival and he used $391 million and a visit to the White House as leverage. It’s shady as fuck and y’all all just think it’s totally normal and cool. If he isn’t convicted and removed (which I have no illusions that he will be), our system of governance will be fundamentally changed toward something where corruption can be openly flouted in front of us with no recourse.

This overlooks the most bizarre incident concerning the impeachment. The night before the May 1868 vote in Andrew Johnson's Senate trial, a twenty-year-old girl named Lavinia “Vinnie” Ream--the celebrated artist and coquettish society sensation who at the age of 18 was awarded the Congressional commission to sculpt the statue of Lincoln now standing in the Capitol rotunda--used her talents to foil the purpose of a midnight caller to her father’s Capitol Hill residence: to secure the deciding vote for conviction from Republican Senator Edmund Ross, a resident in that house. The visitor was Daniel Sickles--litigious Manhattanite real estate speculator, notorious lady's man, ex-Congressman, acquitted killer of his wife's lover, former Civil War general, recently-sacked military governor of the Carolinas, future lover of the Spanish Queen, and as of 1868 the most notorious and formidable political hatchet man in 19th-Century Washington. Acting under the assumption that Ross was "hopelessly infatuated" with pro-Johnson Vinnie and willing to do her bidding to acquit Johnson, Sickles showed up at midnight determined to overcome Vinnie's opposition by using all the tools at his disposal: bribery, intimidation, or seduction. See here the details of how young Vinnie successfully thwarted Sickles--thereby saving President Andrew Johnson from impeachment in a video entitleld "The Devil vs. the Hummingbird":: www.c-span.org/video/?456987-1/sculptor-vinnie-ream-daniel-sickles-andrew-johnsons-impeachment

The fact that he’s also been the single worst president in american history is beside the point. So what really happened? Will someone's opinion give a better answer? Or should we stick to best understanding based on available clues and accounts (which history is)? Unless of course god has written it all down in an impeccable and unquestionable book.

Well now you have to do a video lecture on the Impeachment of Donald Trump.

Did alcohol play a significant role in Johnson's Impeachment. I've heard historical oversimplifications of the trial suggesting that he was a bit too much of a drunkard to remain president.

Radical Republicans are making a come back 😂. 1800: "Hang Jefferson Davis" 2019: "Hang Hillary Clinton" 1868: Impeached a democrat vice president 2020: Impeached a Democrat vice president (if the become the majority House and retain the Senate.) 😂😂

I wish it's just not practical. Even IF that's a big "IF" Even if the Democrats do decide to impeach Trump there's no way the Republican Senate will remove him from office. And the Dems will lose by more than one vote.

I think Congress is too partisan to actually remove Trump, he has way more than 18 supporters in Senate that will back him no matter what.

Hold the phone!! 6:40 the Tenure of Office Act!! You can't fire a cabinet without seeking Senate approval. Sally Yates was just fired by the Usurper Trump. Does this save her job???

I was so hopeful that this law was still applicable. Then I research for more information, disappointed to the fact. Amazing how we see something insignificant because it wasn't applicable then then BAM! it's thought of more than 100 years later. Thanks for all you do.

The Tenure of Office Act was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1887 because it violated the separation of powers.
