They're a British band mate, but the song is an old American folk tale. First recorded in 1933 under the title "Rising Sun Blues", by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster. Try the Animals - Please don't let me be misunderstood if you want to hear more! Cheers bro!

I had to laugh when you were talking about going waaay back to the "older" music. lol I was a teen when this song came out and whenever I hear this song, I am up in my room doing my homework and listening to my radio. "If you wish to travel back in time, music is the surest and safest of all roads." -Jim Fieburg For those of us that lived through the 60's, (I will speak for myself) this music will remain forever fresh and young in my heart. I wish everyone could have lived through that magical time of music history. It was absolutely incredible. Thanks for having a listen to The Animals, Blunt.... Take care and be well. Peace.

I was a teen in the 60's, too. The "way back" comment also made me chuckle. I saw Eric Burdon at a local festival in Redondo Beach, CA about 10 years ago. He was still amazing! It was a small venue on the beach & he came out & chatted with us after his performance. I still don't know why he was singing at the "Lobster Festival" ... but, I'm so glad he did !!! 🥰

I was in 4th grade. When you’re explaining on going waaay back. Lol I found myself chuckling. You’re generation has the two ways that music was/is done to be compared. We didn’t. What we/they had then was top/ state of art. Recording to tape is all they had. Recording to tape to this day has a richer and over all warmer sound. So that’s something to consider when listening to this era of music.

I grew up in the 60s and as I listen to you talk about the difference in music today and then, and think about the technology available to us now, we should be able to do so much more, but instead of driving creativity and uniqueness it seems to have had the opposite effect. So many seek to be like everyone else in the crowd, and technology is used to take the easy way,. Obviously there is still artists that do work hard at their craft but it's so much harder to find. I often think about how good we had it in the 50s, 60s, 70s & 80s and how we took it for granted that we'd always have these singers and song writers and incredible music we grew up with.

the melody of the song is probably centuries old, and it was passed down into Appalachian mining towns in the early 1900's. no one really knows the meaning, but everybody puts their own spin on it. the house of the rising sun could be a pub, a casino, a brothel or hotel depending on who's singing the song and who's listening. the first recordings have a really eerie sound that i can never shake

Eric Burdon, lead singer, was around 21 or so when they recorded this song. Wearing suits seemed to be a thing with bands in the early to mid 60's, especially British Invasion bands. Look at those old film clips of the Beatles when they first came to America. They're wearing matching suits every time.

Hey TooBlunt, I viewed this yesterday, June 14, 2024. I have to tell you I have been watching reactions like you & others for about a month. I am A Nube, a newbee. This is from 1964, I was 13 years Young. They wear the suits as they are following the Beatles standard of dress of the Times. These gays are from England. If you look at the bass player, that person is Chaz Chandler. He & Eric would run off to harlem (in August 1966) to watch the music artist happing there. Not a lot of people new them in Harlem. One night Chaz was watching a show, he was interested in the Guitar player for one of the bands (I can call them that i hope). Chaz went back stage as he & Eric Bourdon had V.I.P. honors. Chaz asked the young Guitar player to get a passport & I his other affairs together, He would come in September 1966 & take him to England to make Music. That guitar player was JIMMI HENDRIX, enough said. Thanks (Former) Firecontrolman second class Mac.or Old FC-2, Keep Up The Great Works.

This is a 1964 version of a song that some believe actually dates back to pre 1900. The Animals is amongst the early British bands during the 1964 "Invasion", not a New Orleans band. As a 77 year old who was a 17 year old Senior in HS when the Beatles first exploded onto the scene in December 1963, it is still hard to wrap my head around the young crowd now, SIXTY years later just listening to some of the greatest songs ever recorded. The British bands had all grown up listening to, and becoming very influenced by, not just American rock & roll but also blues singers from the deep south of the U.S. That's why songs like this exist. It's a mix of rock and blues. This is a guy telling his life story of growing up with a mom who was a prostitute in a "House" called "Rising Sun" and a dad who was a gambler and a drunk. His early experiences have manifested into a life of crime and he's now being sent back to New Orleans to 'wear that ball and chain" (Prison). Mostly though, I'm thrilled that the younger generation actually is embracing these songs.

The Animals were part of the British Invasion that followed the Beatles into the American music market. A lot of up & coming bands in the early 1960s latched onto Blues and American 1950s music, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Animals followed the pattern set by the Beatles of wearing matching suits. When Brian Epstein first heard the Beatles, he recognized talent and offered to manage them. The first thing he did was clean up their 'bad boy' appearance (blue jeans, leather jackets) and put them in suits. The Rolling Stones kept their 'bad boy' image, which worked for them, but putting the Beatles in suits made them more acceptable to a larger audience. The Animals tried the same for a while.

The House of the Rising Sun is an iconic award winning song. When I first heard this on the radio (I was 14), everything stopped. Everyone stopped talking and listened. It was number #1 at the top of both British, American, and Canadian charts for weeks. The Animals are a British Group, and the song apparently has roots in Great Britain folk music and American folk music. It has been studied and investigated by many, and no definitive answer was found on its true genesis or meaning. However, it does have a commonly accepted meaning but with no solid foundation.

They were the fashion in London. It was called Mod fashion and these suits were a kind of subversive twist on traditional clothes that was popular at the time. Nothing really to do with school uniforms, though I get how you'd think that. So they were called Mod suits.... all the bands wore them. My brother, 10 years older than me and in his teens at the time, had one too. (He also affected dark Roy Orbison glasses but had to give that up because he kept tripping over things. It was just the fashion of the time.

the exciting thing is there is such a huge back catalogue of music to discover and you are open to doing it. This band was part of what was known as the British invasion during the sixties headed by the Beatles and the Rolling stones but including cream, the yardbirds, the who , the zombies, and many others. They all cite american blues artisits as early influences. Also the animals discovered Jimmi Hendrix when they were touring in America and brought him back to Britain where he got his break. By going back to the beginning you can see how music developed, the fifties and sixties were the foundations for the seventies. Be happ so much great music...

Interesting fact for you - the bass player in this band is Chaz Chandler, the guy who 'discovered' Jimi Hendrix and became his manager and formed his first band (the Jimi Hendrix Experience)

The House was evidently a real place, a brothel that burned down around 1815-1820. It's likely remains was found in the 2010s when excavation was done to build a parking lot.

when you consider that the bands at that time only had their voices, their instruments and amplifiers and all the equipment fit in a VW bus ... and their music still triggers gigantic feelings in the listener more than 50 years later ... ich liebe "HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN" noch immer

The animals were part of the British invasion. Eric Burdon was known for very unique and talented vocals along with a solid mine up. There is no wonder why they are in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Please continue your journey, there are many rabbit holes to go down. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who , the doors, Rolling Stones, and so many many more, enjoy, be healthy and happy 🤘

Modern music simply doesn't seem to have the same soul. It's formulaic, created to pander to what the industry assumes is a common denominator. Like a sonic Paint by Numbers--- it stifles , rather than encourages true creative expression . I feel bad for the younger generations who haven't been able to experience music that truly comes from the soul. So , I'm happy to see a lot of younger reactors delving into the archives, and getting inspired. It gives me hope that good music can make a comeback, that we'll move past corporate notions of just making music for profit.

I'm glad you reacted to this beautiful song! I was glad to see that you enjoyed it a lot. I know her when I was little, my father had many cassettes with songs of this style. I'm using the translator, I hope it's understood... Other suggestions from those times: - “Reflections of my life” (1967) of Marmalade -"Silence is golden"(1967) of Tremeloes -"A whiter shade of pale" (1967) of Procol Harum -"Young girl" of (60´s) of Gary Puckett & The Union Gap - "California dreaming" of The mamas & the papas Enjoy! ¡Saludos, desde Argentina!

A little fun fact about this song: This song is actually in the public domain, allowing anyone to record as none can claim the rights to it. The animals were not the first band to record this song (though it is arguably the most famous version). This song dates back to the 1930s, and has no distinct origin, leading to its public domain status.

You are correct about modern music. Back in the day there were no computers to manipulate sound, no autotune, the bands had to actually play musical instruments and more often than not the lyrics had meaning.

I got to grow up when this music was new. late '50 - 60s - Early '70s. In Jan '71, I got to see The Animals live at an Ag & Tech College in Upstate NY. The Bass Player was instrumental in getting Jimi Hendrix to come to the US. You should check out "Janis Joplin - Ball & Chain - Monterey Pop" on KZfaq. Mama Cass was in the audience, and she was blown away.
