This is an old American Folk song sung by a British group that absolutely OWNED it. Nobody will ever do it this well. I have heard a very old recording of a young girl in the Appalachian singing it in the early 1930's. She sang it in a bluegrass style - it sounded very haunting. The words change here and there with different versions. The House of The Rising Sun is a saloon with gambling and prostitution. In the song the singer inherited his father's gambling addiction and weakness for vices. The ending of the song is most striking "I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train. I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball & chain" - his addictions have overcome him again and he is a slave to them. Though he seems to hesitate on the platform, but he yields to his addictions and goes back. Eric Burdon's voice is like no other. His career was mismanaged. He had one of the best voices in pop music - ever. There is a tape of him on KZfaq sining "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" live. They sound great - his voice is recording quality on it. Look it up.

Actually it goes back to a old British song. There are different versions, but this is the one we know today. "Rising Sun" was the name of a bawdy house in two traditional English songs, and it was also a name for English pubs. It's further suggested that the melody might be related to a 17th-century folk song, "Lord Barnard and Little Musgrave", also known as "Matty Groves"

Song Facts: -Origin is unknown but believed to been created in late 1800’s - First known recording was in 1930’s by Clarence Ashley who learned it from his grandfather -Lyrics have changed with over 100 different artists covering it -Some versions imply the house was a prison while others describe a brothel, bar, casino or combination -Bob Dylan had a popular folk version on his 1961 debut album -Animals created their version while touring with Chuck Berry and would close their shows with it -Their record label didn’t want to spend money on recording it though and only agreed to give them 15 mins in the studio -Animals recorded it in 1964 after only one take! -Their version describes a man regrettably following in his father’s footsteps as an addicted gambler who can’t stay away from the whorehouse/casino in New Orleans called “House of the Rising Sun”

Music from the sixties was unique. So many songs that are cast into the Rock genre, but every one different. We had so much variety in bands and it was an experimental time for music. Every song was different. It was a great time to come of age and i thank God i lived in America during this time when things seemed new and fresh. I had so much fun. I was blessed.

The song is about a young boy .. His family was poor his mother had to patch his jeans because they couldn't afford a new pair .. His father was a gambler who wasn't very good at gambling .. The House of the Rising Sun was a place where many young men have gotten caught up with a life of vice leaving them with no future except booze, drugs, crime, gambling or prison .. He and his father had fallen into such a life .. He was warning others about this trap so they could avoid it and save their lives from such misery

No one knows who wrote the original song but it’s been traced back several centuries to England and Ireland. It’s permeated the entire Western world and was often sung by women. Animals lead singer, Eric Burdon said in a recent interview he changed many of the lyrics as the most popular version before his was sung by a woman. There actually is a “house” in New Orleans that was once a women’s prison. Above its front door was a large carved rising sun. The history of this song is fascinating.

This clip was filmed in 1964 or 65 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this mimed from the record performance and also a few other top UK only music artists from when the film was made. KZfaq has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro segments to satisfy the US audience. A KZfaq search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows the segments : kzfaq.info?search_query=pop+gear+go+go+mania The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film. Rising Sun is the standout, but the Honeycombs with Have I the Right is a landmark too, In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour. So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money or made by filming a TV screen with poor quality results. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. A better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source in KZfaq postings these days. These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records. Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories that usually pop up.

The Animals' guitarist Hilton Valentine, best known for the iconic opening riff on the English rock band's arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun," has died at the age of 77. 29th January 2021. R.I.P. Keyboard player Alan Price has a fear of flying, and as he travelled the world performing his 60s hits he was gripped with the constant fear of flying. He had to have a shot of vodka before he could even step on a plane.“I once did a tour of 70 cities so that meant 70 vodkas!” said Alan, whose keyboard wizardry turned the Animals into a household name. It was one of the reasons he left the band in 1965.

That whole era, which had the Beatles, Stones, Animals, The Who, among others is one we will never see again. The song goes back before the rock and roll era. alan price is playing the keyboards in this song. another great song from the Animals is - don't let me be misunderstood, you'll love it. Huddie Ledbedder ( Leadbelly ) wrote the house of the rising sun in the 1920's many have credited the song to martin and turner, but because huddie was a black man in america at the time, he wasn't allowed to have publishing rights so he never got credit or made money from it. he was born in louisiana and later moved to texas, he used to travel around playing his songs in coffee shops. he had a very rough life, including spending years in prison for murdering his cousin because huddie felt that he disrespected a woman. when he was released from prison he travelled to nearby louisiana, where he started drinking and doing drugs. one night he got into a fight and almost killed another man when he stabbed him with a knife and ended up going back to prison. in this song he's warning people of what can happen if you make bad decisions in life. alot of his songs were later done by other people, because he couldn't take credit for the songs they were listed as traditional songs and the people who performed them would write their names as the writers. including LED ZEPPELIN, their song " the gallows pole " is one of them. he wrote that one when he was in prison waiting to get sentenced for murder and he thought they were going to execute him by hanging him ( the gallows pole ) and he was trying to get his family to raise money so they wouldn't hang him. when you listen to led zeppelin doing it , and you listen to the words you'll understand.

Yes they were famous and 1964 was early in the transformation of rock with more innovative styles and modern lyrics. This was also at the start of the British invasion of the American rock scene with groups like the Animals, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Zombies and The Yardbirds to name a few.

I don't know who the keyboardist is, but what he's playing is the Hammond B3 organ. It's a very distinct sound. As you already noted The Doors made heavy use of the Hammond B3 as well. It's in a lot of songs from the 1960s & 1970s. It's so unique that even today when it pops up in music it stands out.
