At some point it occured to me that Germanic peoples are the great colonizers of the world. They were pretty much everywhere in Europe at some point, Northern US and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the whole British Empire, and even the first men on the Moon were German Americans. The only other people who got around that much are the Asian steppe peoples, but they weren't really that much in settling.

Great video and great maps! Glad your redoing German history in more detail. The tribal history of pre-Christian Europe is fascinating and the history books often neglect this period.

I'm reading J. B. Bury's book the Invasion of Europe by the Barbarians but there are no maps in my copy. There were so many tribes and they travelled so far that this video is a nice visual to go along with the reading. Great job!!

Hello from Poland my dear German friends! You know, that country east to yours. I have a question - I know that Nordic had their own religion (Norse) that we all know and love, but did these lower germanic tribes (Burgundians, Saxons, Franks etc.) have their own religion as well? If yes, was it universal for all of the tribes "under" the Jutland Peninsula, or each tribe had its own variant? Reply quickly and simple :D

Because the german tribes werent conquered by the romans, the german language is still a germanic language and largely uneffected by romance languages. I find this very interesting.

I found this very informative. I was starting to memorize most of these details and your video really clarified everything. I wasn't aware that the Celts originally dominated central Europe and that the Germanic tribes and the Goths started so far up north. A hypothesis I am playing around with is that the Bronze Age collapse and the fall of Rome were caused by global cooling, which in the case of Rome, forced a mass migration into Roman territory and in the Bronze Age collapse, the raids of the Sea Peoples (I'm sure something similar to what we saw in this video happened to the Mycenaeans, Hittites, and Egyptians). The little ice age around the mid 1300s brought about the plague and the 100 years war and by the end of the little ice age in the mid 1800s, Europeans had already spread all over the world, settling in the Americas and Australia and building huge empires. I keep telling people that in 20-30 years with climate change, we'll be doing a mass migration like this again, with people moving northward and away from the coasts.

This is a really cool video, I think it is so much better than the original... One thing though: the background music was at times a bit loud, especially around 4min it's easy to notice, had some trouble understanding you sometimes (maybe a headphones vs speaker thing?)

"Teutones" isn't derrived from "diutisc", but "deutsch" is. Also the Italian word for Germans "Tedesci". The Teutons were a Germanic tribe in 300 something BC that traveled South and were destroyed by the Romans. Btw: we don't know whether the Germanic people spoke of themselves as "diutisc". That word isn't recorded before the 8th century.

Just a suggestion that would make your videos much more fun and easier to watch: SUBTITLES! I sometimes have a hard time listening to what you say when there is some ambience in the background, and I can barely watch your videos on mobile. Subtitles would make your videos much more enjoyable :)

Here's a fact for the Sweden videos: During the Great Northern War, an interesting thing happened at the town of Warsaw. Charles went up to the gates of the Polish-Lithuanian town and shouted, "Open the door!". When the guards looked to see who this shouting man was, Charles himself forced open the gates while Swedish troops stormed in. And that's how to great city of Warsaw was once captured by 300 men using nothing more than unloaded muskets and canes.

Nice update. A couple things: Small error, but you have one of the tribes of as the "Macromanni" when it was the Marcomanni, a Latinized name for "Mark Men" aka Frontier Men. They were the ones that the beginning of Gladiator are supposed to be depicting and were a subset of the greater Suebi tribal confederation. A more significant error is the whole aside about "Deutsch". The world Deutsch comes from an Old High German word (which would place it in the High Middle Ages during the time of knights). At this time there is little evidence they had a name for themselves but would instead name those who were deemed not of their group (usually with the Walhaz root, which means stranger or outsider...which is where you get Walloon, Welsh, etc). Some subsets of Germans would claim that they were the true bloods or that other groups were of their own blood. From this Sweboz (which became Suebi) means "one's own" or "genuine". As for Teuton, all evidence points to that being a Celtic word. With time it was confused and muddled with the German people by the Romans (the Teutons might have not just had a Celtic name but might also had been Celtic, it is unclear....though the Cimbri were almost certainly Germanic) and only during the Victorian era did the word Teuton come to be synonymous with German. Also the Visigoth sack of Rome by Alaric was in 410, not 455...that was the Vandals.
