As ridiculous as it looks, it does a really effective job at demonstrating how the gait of a character really does affect their demeanor, the tone, and everything else far more than you'd think

Never seen this before but I'm going to assume This short video is a clip cut to short making the context seem like body language is tied to gender rather than personality and overall character type, it's so simplified that you learn nothing from this video, that can be taken as fact in animation

@RaspBerryPies
@RaspBerryPies 10 ай бұрын
@@guyofminimalimportance7No it’s more likely the people who saw this back then were seeking it out or cared a lot about animation and the man speaking. Since he is famous in those circles. People seeing it now are just random people because the algorithm said to show this to everyone even if they’re not an animation enthusiast. So it’s note as deep as you might think because you’ll see comments similar to the old one about the new animated series “The Amazing Digital Circus” lots of people saying it’s a masterpiece and admiring it. Of course there are some jokes but there are lots of those and that show just came out like a week ago!

And this is what I hate about the art community. There's so many stereotypes about how men and women walk or look or whatever. This is why I would advise someone, if they want to draw extremely realistically based off of knowledge from college, do not go to our school, learn anthropology. You're going to learn what's actually the difference between men and women, not these cheesy stereotypes XD
@ThevralLee
@ThevralLee 3 жыл бұрын
@@otakumangastudios3617 uh but animation, especially the type he’s showing, is rooted in exaggeration? It’s not even about stereotypes when he even mentioned it’s the anatomy? The thin willowy woman has a delicate walk and a large muscular man has to walk facing out because of his massive bulge
@otakumangastudios3617
@otakumangastudios3617 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThevralLee yeah, I guess I just have run into a lot of men who really think the way he's talking, that women actually walk that way, yada yada yada. I'm just sensitive to the stuff as a woman, because I've had a lot of crap said to me, and I used to be convinced by a lot of stereotypes about how women should hold themselves, along with personality types and such. It was to the point that I almost questioned my gender, and that's why I strive to make real gender differences more clear at least in my work. I guess I'm just sensitive to all of this, because I see a lot of misrepresentation of both male and female and media, and also I have been told by old man artists like him how to draw men and women and such, which I'm trying to stray away from what they teach in college or whatever. I guess I just have felt a bit victimized by society's ideal about what a woman is, and I just want to break that. Sorry if I came off overly sensitive, it is a hot topic for me. also I would just like to mention, I am definitely not one of those Twitter sjws that goes around fixing people's art. I try To change the world by making my own art that's groundbreaking, not editing other people's art.
@ThevralLee
@ThevralLee 3 жыл бұрын
@@otakumangastudios3617 I understand where you come from and what you mean about how women should be. It’s commendable too how you’re using your skills for your cause. I just think that even then, we should figure out where we draw our lines in the sand. This video is from a set of lessons about animation basics and walk cycles while using some dated humor. Making it about stereotype perpetuation just feels like missing the point and diminishes your cause. And I think there’s nothing wrong even if people want to draw extremely effeminate women and masculine men or even vice versa. It doesn’t have to be malicious in intent. Most people are aware anyways that animation is not reality and both women and men can be vastly different or very similar.

For the guys out there: the reason a lot of women walk kinda like that is because of our hips being wider than mens, BUT when that walk looks more exagerated (like the example in the video) its mainly due to high heels and the specific way you have to walk in. If you see a woman wlaking like that everday, she probably wears high heels too much haha.

It's funny to see people trying to defend the statements "all women walk like that" and "all men walk like that". I think a person's walk has more to do with their age, weight, strength, upbringing, and perhaps what they're wearing. For example, my mom's got some joint problems, so she tends to shuffle or waddle. The "woman walk" shown here is found on catwalks and places where women are taught to be poised. A couple of comments say this is sexist because it offers a pretty narrow view of women. However, the clip is only 50 seconds, so it's possible the content is done a disservice because of that.

I dont think anyone is really saying all women or all men walk like this. This is just supposed to be a cartoon of an exaggerated walk cycle to get the point across to the viewers, of the differences between how men and women walk. I would love to watch the full DVD tho, see how in depth he goes into walk cycles.
@odarter9800

He starts off the video saying women “tend” to walk a certain way. And he goes out of his way to emphasize that. I don’t really think that’s him trying to assert some sexist message. This seems to be a good lesson for demonstrating: how a character’s physiology can affect their movement, how passing motion can relate to this, and how the quality of the walk can affect character. And I feel strongly about that last one, because he’s actually demonstrating the difference. And notice he’s not saying, “There! SEE! See how WRONG that is!” He’s demonstrating it so that you understand how all these points are interrelated. I don’t think it’s strange to think that Richard had to create walk cycles that broke past those stereotypes too. Also, just to be clear, I’m not saying any of this to be dismissive or whatever, I agree with what you said. You mentioned how you understand how some women walk like that. But I haven’t EVER seen men walk like that before. I guess what I’m trying to say is: I don’t think that any of this is meant to be taken literally. Like a lot of good demonstrations, I think he’s trying to summarize many concepts at once, so that he can elaborate on them in more detail, later, without losing the audience. Though, I’ll also admit I haven’t watched this full thing before, so I can’t really say how effective he was with that. I do think, based on his book, he has an understanding of this idea, however. The most annoying thing about this, for me, is just that some idiots will use things like this as some sort of justification to act a fool. But that’s never going to not be a problem.

the reason your mom has hip problems is probably because she's literally a woman and her hip sockets would probably not cause her so much pain if she were a man. it's just the bone structure of men vs. women.

This is an exaggeration of the way the genders walk, but there are distinct differences between the way genders walk. Not that anyone can not walk the opposite waybut it's a case of learning the gender norms before you decide to break them in your animation. By the way, he's not saying "see how WRONG that is" but that "see how UNCOMMON that is" and that that might not be what you were going for. Learn the rules before you break them.

It isn’t so much that women “protect” themselves with their legs (although it makes sense when women are sitting down with their legs folded), but more like there is nothing hindering their movement and so they can lean deeper into their inner thigh and swing their hips.
@Blade.5786

I think it has a lot to do with clothing as well. You can't spread your legs too much in a skirt, for obvious reasons.
@HibiscusOrchid
@HibiscusOrchid 10 ай бұрын
I'd also say it's easier for the legs to walk more inwards because woman's legs are further apart, so the thighs dont squish against each other, making inward walking more natural/less resistive. Men's legs are more closer together, so even when resting, can tell more easily when sitting, their thighs oppose each other, which often results in the typical 'manspreading'. Also doesnt help the balls are located in a peculiar position And also... Why they gotta animate the bulge like that 🤣🤣
