Put simply: nobody knows. Certainly, there are instances in which companies invest vast amounts of money in order to have something done, but that's not the whole picture. I really wished this could give us light on the subject, but I find it as a mixed bag; it's like Schrödinger's cat: you don't know if it's one way or another until you actually get to check that information. Still, this was great to know. As for me: I still believe that budget isn't everything in this world. Several circumstances can turn a project into a nightmarish landscape or a rollercoaster, so it's way easier to guess what's going on based on the staff list (which is not always complete or provides real names) and schedules.

I'd love the equivalent of a GDC or DEFCON event for anime at this point - if it doesn't exist already. It's be great to get a more structured breakdown of how different anime studios handled their projects. Then again, I may just be spoiled by the current openness the games industry and programming industry have given the amount of talks available online

I awlays divided this topic in 3 categories : Time, Budget, and staff. All of them need to be at a minimuM level, and even if we have a big budget and a lot of time, if it's given to unskilled creator, the result will be meh at best (and so on for the 2 others).

I was first in for the myth, but then I was more interested in a further indepth analysis of your findings in budget costs and more that goes into anime production and the like, and am left feeling blue balled, especially if you had any interviews with any production teams that were willing to give any sort of analysis on how morale was on the floor during a particular animation, where the most time was invested in. In planning, story board, and etc. what would the breakdown in time consumption look like within that studio's team?

Thank you so much for this video, it’s really eye opening. Although mostly for me personally because I’m wondering, could this apply to games?
@TheCanipaEffect
@TheCanipaEffect 4 жыл бұрын
Not as much because in games, there's no limited scope. For example, with anime, you're paying for 12 episodes that are 20 minutes long. No matter what you pay, you're paying for just those 20 minutes and the quality relies on your planning, connections and direction. But with games, you can expand the scope however you want. You can add hours to the gameplay experience, add new features, spend a lot of time on UI, spend more time in bug fixing etc. etc. So budgets have a much more visible effect in games. That said, it doesn't necessarily make the game good. Bad design decisions and poor planning can still wreck a game that costs tens of millions of dollars.

The best analogy for this is: If you hire Gordon Ramsey and you tell him to make you a Beef Wellington but you give him 30 min to make it. Do you thinks he will make a good one? NO. Now if you tell him to make you one in 2 hours, do you think it will taste better? YES This can be applied to animating anime.

Do we have an example of a show with a big budget and bad animation??
@SadFace201
@SadFace201 4 жыл бұрын
My guess is One Punch Man. It was wildly successful in the first season, so I can't imagine that it would be given a smaller budget in the second season. Yet the Studio changes (and presumably the staff changes) really hit the quality. Also Mekakucity Actors. Studio Shaft is a fairly successful studio with good animators, but the animation for Mekakucity Actors was pretty mediocre. There was also a CG scene in one of the episodes that was notoriously bad which they had to fix in the Blue Ray. I don't know which staff they put on that project, but it was saddening to see the potential of the Kagerou Project get undermined by the anime.

Frankly, anime studio go way to fast into the "do" instead of properly planning through the presentation, story and what they are even capable of doing in-house and out-house. If you are a programmer, you'll realise you'll spend way more time thinking of what to and how to implement stuff instead of blindly rushing in and probably discarding most of it anyway. As far as I understand, start mainly with the storyboards which already nearly completely script out scenes and episodes but the whole anime at once. Anime studios are notorious for crunch time and one episode per week productions. This is just bad for everyone including the viewer. Animating is certainly more time consuming than coding a segment even if it's well thought out. But I do believe that proper managing and communication in tandem with having a decent plan, would aid anime production a lot. Though there is a lot wrong with the rampant exploitation including the abysmal pay, while you can work on all the issues at once, I certainly prioritize the employees being able to live comfortably off their work. I also assume that it's easier to change the system if you aren't fearing for your livelihoods.

Great video Canipa, this was very informative. This isn’t quite a myth but I would love to see a video that discusses censorship laws in anime. Back before the 2,000’s it felt like anime had no rules and could get away with anything it wanted. In this modern era of anime it feels like shows are considerably tamer and aren’t allowed to show things that were once completely acceptable. This mainly applies to violence and fan service. However I’ve notified that shows licensed by Amazon and Netflix appear to be less restricted and can be more adult. Devilman, Vinland Saga, etc.... So I’m curious, what are the censorship standards like in modern anime. Keep up the awesome work. 👍
@Knoloaify
@Knoloaify 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's most likely due to the way anime is sold and marketed, as well as what you choose to watch. Because anime in the 90's isn't that different from the 00's and 10's violence-wise. Hell just watch the Heaven's Feel movies that have gore and sex, Psycho-Pass or more surprisingly Kimetsu no Yaiba which can get pretty gruesome despite being aimed at young teens. And I didn't even mention Maid in Abyss, which has more gory and hard hitting scenes than many 80's anime. There are still anime with gore out there. With the death of the OAV model, there're fewer ways to sell really crazy violent/sexual content, but this is changing due to the new trend of movie series which can have more freedom due to not having TV restrictions on them. I also think that gore simply isn't as popular as it used to be, with iyashi-kei being the most popular genre there's obviously less violence in anime as a result. That said there is censorship, for TV anime. Especially aimed at children and young teens. Like Jotaro's cigarette, etc. Also, there's bias in the way we perceive 80's anime because we don't consume them like people did at the time. All the gory scenes you're thinking about weren't shown in TV anime shows for younger people even back then, even Gundam (which main theme is WAR) didn't have gore.
@Kaimax61
@Kaimax61 4 жыл бұрын
@@Knoloaify Yeah the perceived bias with 80's-90's era anime, that's my main pet-peeve with people that praise the 80s-90s anime. If they watched animes in those era like how we watch animes now (limited to just the current seasons at that time), I bet they won't give so much praise to it

4:34 : "their cost cutting meant working with Real time rendering, which isn't yet at a point where it looks as good as prerendered work". Obviously, on paper, prerendered 3d can look way better then real time stuff, but in practice I find that the real time rendered animations during cutscenes or gameplay of anime-stylized video games often look WAY better then any pre-rendered CGI anime; likely because anime studios using 3d tend to do stuff like drop the framerates or remove interpolation to try to emulate 2d, but the result just looks choppy and stilted, wheras games look as smooth as possible and benefit as a result: Look at the CC2 Naruto games or Asura's Wrath and their cutscenes.

If I get a commission I use it to upgrade my tablet or upgrade my computer to handle my animation program but I still make experiment with animations until I can reach at least average level. The Anime Budget Episode is either two things. They have the standard budget and animators are just so passionate to make great animation, An example is One Punch Man. Or the anime just has ridiculous budget. Like Attack on Titan. Also, Nichijou is a high budget anime. (I know it's animated so well, but it's not as flashy as the "Budget Episode")

Kill La Kill is a title that makes the whole thing really complicated, as it has really good animation and art but it also revels in limited animation and animation shortcuts.

I thought the animation was fine outside of that fucking CGI Satsuki in the early episodes.
