Paul Mawhinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the years he has amassed what has become the world's largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection.

This is incredible, to all those saying that none of this matters as we have 'progressed'.. Even if that was true, we still shouldn't ignore the past. New ways of listening to music are being created every day but that doesn't mean that we should completely stop using Vinyl. I can't believe no-one has bought this collection...

Serious record collector here... and poor. I know how hard it has to be to part with these gems. I only WISH I had 3 million dollars, as I would jump on this! I would cherish an archive like this forever! However, being on a fixed income, there's no way I could ever afford it. Now if I ever won the lottery... I'd give him double his asking price but, that isn't likely to ever happen. My best to you Paul, and hope you are able to find a buyer.

I wonder how Paul and his amazing collection is doing today. I love vinyl albums and everything they are representing. I would swap every single thing that i own to this collection and cherish it to the rest of my life. Sadly my belongings aren't even near worth of the asked price. I cannot understand that nobody is interested, not even any succeeded musician?

@tramp2000 Good point. After buying it, there's the costs of packing it all, shipping it and then buying or building an archive to keep it in, insurance, security system, the cost of keeping the archive going & maintained, etc. The easiest thing to do would be to buy the building that the archive is in and either move there, or travel to it often to run the place. Like anything, it can take years to cultivate a buyer for something like this.

Very touching. I'm surprised that Coca-Cola or some other big company don't offer him the $3 Million he is asking for, and open "The Coca-Cola American Record Archive" or something along those lines. $3 Million for $50 Million worth of records that will probably only go up in value, as well as the positive PR, it would make good business sense.

This guy is surely a true music and hi-fi lover. But he said something wrong about MP3. He said the highs et the low are clipped, but he confuses the pitch and volume. Clipping is the method of cutting the high noise levels in order to compress the dynamic range (in order to play louder on the radio). This method is also used on lossless digital music (FLAC, WAV, ALAC). But it's also used on vinyl records ! Moreover, the dynamic range is lower on the vinyls than on the CDs ! So we can assert that in the absolute the sound is more compressed on vinyls than on CDs and MP3. I have nothing against vinyl lovers and I understand that the warmth of the analog sound can be pleasant.
@250Pants
@250Pants 9 жыл бұрын
+Victor Malvolti That's right. I think that he was giving an example, a bad one, but he did not literally meant that "the highs and lows are clipped." What he meant is that in analogue productions or SPARS codes "AAA" and "AAD" (check Wikipedia for what SPARS codes mean) some information present in the original recording is lost in the conversion process. It could very well be that some of the information lost is in the higher or lower frequencies and the sensation of "clipping" may occur but this has nothing to do with dynamic range or compression. I agree that for post 1990s DDD recordings a digital reproduction will always be better than one on vinyl. However, for all of those AAD recordings that appeared on CD I side with vinyl as I have learned to appreciate all the subtleties in the music that only show up in vinyl but not on CD, things like hearing the "fingers" or the "slides" in a bass guitar or cello.

@victwi It's usually hard to sell it for what it's worth, and what about the many years he spent collecting & archiving it? What was his time & knowledge worth? I recently attended a big car auction in Arizona and saw many cars selling for less than they cost to store, but that's the market. Big time car collectors don't expect to make a profit on their cars, they just balance their checkbooks by selling & buying cars. I own a car that cost $120K to build. I'd be lucky to get $40K for it.

@djharmonix Most of those new-money celebs aren't educated or cultured enough to know the high value of this collection. The value is high in many more ways than just the money, that's for sure! Reality check: Most of the hot musicians these days will see their CDs in the 50 cent bins in a few years(new, cut-out copies). If I had $4 million, I'd spend $3 million on this archive and $500K to build an archive space with listening stations for the public.

InternalCombustionGenie There is no way that's from 1881. The first Berliner records date back to 1889 and they were 5 inches wide, the one he is holding is 7 inches wide. That record is probably from 1890's.

@BlueSuedeBabies If you think it's hard explaining the difference between analog vinyl and digital recordings, try explaining to people why film is still better than video, HD, etc. Film director Robert Rodriguez is anti-film, pro-video. He states "The only reason to shoot film these days is for purely nostalgic reasons." That's absurd.

@ELECTRIKHEADS If there isn't one buyer or corporation that buys it, maybe 60 investors could from an LLC or a non-profit and each invest $50,000 in buying the Archive. Heck, there are coke addicted businessmen who spend that much a year up their nose. The problem with The Archive, is that the people who appreciate it do not have the money. Those that do, are interested in other thing, not records. Maybe NEIL YOUNG or EDDIE VEDDER will see this and save the archive?
@250Pants
@250Pants 9 жыл бұрын
$2-3 million might be worth it but he stands a better chance of selling if he can pull of a few thousand or hundred titles that have sold or have been valued in the $1000s or $100s. If I am a buyer considering to invest in this collection I'd be looking for the meat. I bet that out of those millions of records only a small fraction is worth something.
@jeffg1524

+boolz22 Agree. He mentions that between 1948 and 1966 only 17% of the music is still available. I understand one person's treasure is another's trash, but please, there's a good reason most of the music hasn't been transferred to CD-digital sources. I'm sure a lot of music from that era is dreck that “deserves” to be forgotten.
@lesolak843
@lesolak843 8 жыл бұрын
+boolz22 the idea is to keep The Archive as it is and maybe make additions like todays Vinyls. I wouldn't sell it piece by piece too. Also If I were Amazon or Apple, I'd just buy The Archive and make FLAC versions of each record. Then I'd release albums for listening online too.
@250Pants
@250Pants 8 жыл бұрын
+Le Solak It doesn't work like that. Apple and Amazon can't do $#!t with those records. They do not own the rights to distribute or sell copies of those recordings in digital format. The record companies do. Also, I didn't mean sell the collection piece by piece, I meant to value it in terms of the records on it that are worth the most (the meat).
@lesolak843
@lesolak843 8 жыл бұрын
+boolz22 I totally understand the copyrights situation and it's just too easy to talk about The Archive for me but ofc Amazon or Apple can deal with those record companies. I didn't mean it's too easy, I meant a company should step up to keep the archive alive and make it open to public so they can earn more money from it too. : ) ex: apple can stream the music and pay %something to the record companies for listening counts etc. in the video they say it's estimated value is about $55 million so 2-3 million is already too cheap for it. any big company can do this easily.
@250Pants
@250Pants 8 жыл бұрын
+Le Solak ;-) wishful thinking... the recordings are so old god knows who owns the rights now. Some of the labels may be out of business and not being represented. It would "take a village" (as Hilary Clinton said) to bring all the licensing together and then... is ithe effort going to pay off in terms of dollars$??

I'm reasonably sure that LOTS of people "give a damn". There just aren't any people WITH MONEY that give a damn. People with money give a damn about money--that's why they have it. If they gave a damn about records, they'd have records--not money.

How can anyone refer to this collection as bullshit just because there are new recording formats‽ So much of today’s music is lifted from yesteryear it beggars belief that even one person is too deaf to recognise it. If I won $3mil plus shipping, handling, import duty & somewhere to store them, I'd have the lot. Don't get me wrong Barry Manilow is not my cup of tea but it's important none the less for that.
