That a large number of troops fielded by Soviet Union during its congested occupation of Afghanistan came from these countries is another reason behind the uneasy relationship that these countries have with Afghanistan. Indians do operate out of Tajikistan though such operations can't be described as such routine ones as follow permanent deployments. India air force was seen operating from Ayni even as it airlifted its nationals once the US forces left and the Taliban began their second stint at power.
