The Art of Balancing Stones

The very first time I tried balancing stones was back in 2010. I saw some stone sculptures in a park, when an old, wise man told me that it was a symbol for the balance of nature. I liked that idea, and after that I started making easy stone sculptures. After a while, I started experimenting with balance and I tried to make stone sculptures that had such small balance points so that it almost would look impossible.
I really loved that.
Both because it felt like a challenge, but also because it forced me to get really still and quiet, and focus on one thing only; to find the tiny, tiny balance point.
It more and more turned into some kind of meditation.
I hope this video will inspire you to try it out yourself! :)

I live on an island. Every summer, there's some tourist (or maybe several different groups of people) who builds various kinds of stone sculptures. Animal forms or these pillars of balance. The sculptures don't last long. Weather, mischievous kids or people who think it's fake topple them. But I am thankful to whoever makes them because I can't. Shaky hands since birth. Keep doing it, whoever you are! I'm not the only one who likes seeing them! :D

The balancing of objects is well studied and known. The next step is to accomplish the impossible. that, too, has long been known as magic. Both things had so far no special impact except the finding, there is something, somebody can not imagine and this knowledge is very modest. Some things are nice and some things are beautiful, thats it.

I too balance stones!! I have 3 small kiddos, so mostly in my yard when I need some time alone or peace of mind, but I love it all the same! I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm insane!! Out front, in the wee hours of morning, balancing stones.... Glad to see I'm not the only one who gains so much from the simplicity of rocks! But, there is nothing quite like finding a group of rocks that work harmoniously together. Also, what she said about "feeling" it, that is dead on! I try to tell my littles that when they get frustrated with a stack (of course my kiddos want to make a mini pile by their mommas♡), move it slowly and you will "feel" the balance before you see it. I highly recommend to anyone of any age!! It can be balancing, grounding, peaceful, tranquil, meditative, teach patience, be restorative, exuberant, fulfilling, harmonious, create stillness, a way to connect with nature, or sometimes many of these in one sitting, depending on what you need at the time💕

I think that's the essence of life teaching patients and impermanence. I was thinking that too when I saw that clip and how much it humbles you atter hours and many times failing. I feel it can really stretch and test your patience and understanding that even if you do balance it. Balance is temporary and the stones can fall at any time without any warning with minimal force. I think it symbolizes inner peace so perfectly.

As a seeker and a yoga practitioner myself, I see that this is just what we do, with our breath, with our bodies,...and in that moment, of perfect balance you experience the magic!, something so beautiful, something that words struggle to capture. And with time and experience, by learning the art and technique, that moment stays and lingers longer with you...

I love this. Way back in the 80's when I lived in a student house, there were rare nights with no strange things going on. But all the other nights, anything could happen. One thing that repeatedly happened, was that party heroes making a last stand often felt they had the responsibility to stack all kinds of things from the floor, to the ceiling. Chairs, porcelain, glasses, wine bottles, potted plants and whatnot. The early birds responsibility next morning was to carefully dismantle the beautiful but fragile pieces of pillar art made, a bit like a bomb squad. I remember it as a meditation like experience to construct the pillars, and the impermanence insight when dismantling them, like a sand mandala.

I build these w my daughter in the streams of N Carolina an my home I’m East Tennessee. The balance against current is amazing, in stacked the 3-4 ft high. It meditation that I unlock any other, not to get frustrated and understanding that we are as permanent as this small frame of time before something or someone upsets it’s balance and destroys it. It helps me and helps me learn my daughter patience and understanding, not to mention spending time w each other without the stresses of the world and tech that consumes a lot of everyone and our lives. I hope she remembers the lessons an time spent w me balancing rocks and ourselves. 🫶🏻 from East Tennessee USA

This was a very inspiring video, thanks for sharing it. Seeing you balance these rocks reminds me of the hours and hours I would spend as a kid balancing my action figures on one hand. Nothing else matter in those moments I was completely engulfed in trying the find the balance points and achieving my goal. It’s silly but those moments as a child helped to shape much of my outlook on life and what is possible. In those moments I learned that with enough time a patient I can do just about anything I put my mind too. I’ve great deal of skills that most people don’t even try because they think it’s to hard but you never have a chance if you don’t try. I think an those moments balancing my actions quite offend actually, and what you said in this video is exactly how I feel about it. You helped clarify it more in my head with your explanations, so thank you. I’m going to have to pick up the hobby again but this time with balancing rocks.
