I remember as a young student, telling my drum teacher that I would never be as good as Billy Cobham. His answer was classic. He said, “That’s okay. He can only play one gig at a time. There’s room for you too .”

I had a similar thing happen when I first met my drum teacher. I was like I’ll never be as good as Brujner or Eric Moore. He just chuckled and said you never know lol.

I've always said to my students: there's that drum idol you idolise and compare yourself to but always make sure you are aware of you! I'd qualify this with this observation: when your idol is playing somewhere it's the audience who are there that enjoy that moment the most. When you play anywhere it's you that audience are listening to in that moment. Two separate moments. Both with an audience for music to a greater or lesser scale. Your place is where you are and when you play. Your significance is equal to your hero in that moment. If we allowed only our heroes to play there would be countless places around the world without live music to enjoy. When you play you entertain that audience at that time and in that place. What music fan would I be to be at your gig and somehow think: he's great but no Billy Cobham!? It's not on my mind though. Not remotely. Billy is wherever, on the other side of the planet, and you are right Infront of me and the rest in attendance. I have family and friends around the world but I'm only connected best when together in person. You are the connection to music when you play to any particular audience.. do us all a favour and make sure you keep getting gigs. The public shouldn't have to wait for Cobham to finally visit that area or never visit at all. You fill the gap in the market with your own contributions. You are great and I know that without even hearing ya. I know cause you care. Think of gigs as a dinner table. What worth is any person not present at that table over the people who are? Converse and laugh and make the moment for the people there. That's your value and moment which noone can take from you

In the 70's, there was Billy Cobham...and everyone else. He was the Micheal Jordan of drumming. When he came on the scene, he was playing open handed, with super clean singles going across the toms at light speed, and ultimate odd time mastery. Just an otherworldly experience.

Billy Cobham is arguably Earth's greatest drummer and one the most gracious and humble people you could ever meet. I was lucky to meet him at a High School of Music and Art alumni reunion in Paris in the late 1990s, and to this day regret that my talking endlessly about John McLaughlin's compositions got in the way of my expressing to him how much his own music meant to me.

Fantastic interview ...remember watching Mr.Billy Cobham about 4 years ago at Ronnie Scotts in London playing with a full Big Band..about 1/2 way through the evening ..Billy Cobham paused ..said he would do another song....instead he sized up the band ..sensed they were tired and said..I will give the boys in the band a break and went into a long drum solo that was jaw dropping ..it waa priceless and the audience and the band applauded ..that was also priceless ...joy and laughs all around ..Mr Cobham is indeed a real gracious man ...

I saw Billy perform in Moscow when I was living there in the early 2000's. I went backstage to talk to him (something I could get away with there) and he was very friendly and willing to have a chat. At one point a local news crew came up to interview him, I said, "Well, I'll take off now and get out of your way" but he insisted I stay so we could finish our conversation after they got done with the interview. With those glasses Terry looks kind of like Harvey Keitel.

Believe it or not, in 1998 I had the opportunity to have dinner with Mr. Cobham, my idol, on the occasion of the recording of an educational video that took place in Genoa, Italy (my hometown). For legal reasons (not referring to Mr. Cobham but to something else) this video was never released but I still have the recordings of that event. Him and me, alone. Needless to say, I pestered him with questions, as Billy was and still is my hero. That was a conversation, an interview, my personal interview and I still remember it as one of the strangest and most beautiful moments of my life. At one point, however, Billy couldn't stand it anymore and called Dado Moroni on the phone, who saved him from me. My nickname, which I love, is related to him in some way, being the mangling of the name of one of his labels (Bilham Cobly Productions, Inc.)

Much of what made "Spectrum" such a landmark album(aside from Billy's brilliant compositions and drumming) is the heartfelt warm, greasy, funky foul tone of the young guitarist "Tommy Bolin" (RIP) 🔥There are many others at the time with far more technique (and also great feel ) but no other seemelesy bridged the rock. jazz , funk. World divide with such emotion and purity The way Terry describes Billy (which I agree) is how I feel about Tommy Bolin. Sadly Tommy passed after the very first night opening for his close friend Jeff Beck on the " Wired Tour". Jeff attributes Tommy for inspiring him to go into a fusion musical direction. That tour is exactly what couod have brought Tommy the name recognition deserved. If unfamiliar with Tommy's solo work check " Teaser" (75) Notice tracks 1) "Homeward Strut" Jeff Pocaro drums 2) " Marching Powder" Narrate Michael Walden drums

Tommy Bolin was a fkn monster. On Spectrum yes, just beautiful, and his two solo album, yes yes yes, just gorgeous. I saw him live with Deep Purple at Wembley Empire Pool in '76. He was spinning round while he played with a long red scarf round his neck. Real rock god warrior stuff!!

Hey Terry & Billy 👋 I don't know if you guys read the comments but I just wanted to say that interview was "Pretty inspiring" 😇👏 Not just because you're both awe inspiring drummers who have influenced generations of fans, but even more so, because of how humble you both are & the respect you show each other, not competing but acknowledging each other's unique & diverse talents. Even Terry admiring Billy, as once this immovable force, but using that inspiration to create his own thing & now years later as friends with his hero. Terry, I used to read Modern Drummer as a teenager, looking at your massive DW kit, thinking "I could never be that good" Hey, I was right 😂 But the point is, I might never be but it was still an inspiration to be the best player I can be... Because there's only "one" Terry Bozzio" & there's only one "Christian Gibbs" 😎✌️ (Well...Except for the other Christian Gibbs that was 2 years older at school 🏫😂) Never know, when I get a DW endorsement, we might become friends too 😁 lol Thank You both for the inspiration & great to see you're both still passionate & playing into your 70's 😇🙏

We lived in BuckFum, Wyoming in the mid-1970s and there was a small community college and we knew a girl that was working in their radio station. We asked her to play Billy Cobham for those Cowboys. The station student manager (who was a real control freak) called up after 20 seconds screaming at and said that that wasn't allowed. But it was a 15 minute song and it had to finish. Most of the listeners called in and said it was amazing.
