Two Minute Music Theory

Music theory is often confused as being mostly about identification, but really - it's more about interpretation. Music Theory is an art. And it's an artform that is both valuable and practical for all musicians throughout their lifetime.

How do you view music analysis? Is it more of a science or an art to you?

Music Theory is a documentation of a musical language.

For me, music theory is like so many others things in that it's a blend of art and science, and the lines between the two experiences of music theory are not clear. I am a part-time music student (still working full-time during weekdays, so it's something I pursue on my own time and I absolutely LOVE it) and I've taken and will continue to take quite a few music theory courses, as well as some instrument performance classes (primarily guitar, but also now including keyboard), ear training, and music production. For what it's worth, my experience with music theory is that it's an essential way for me learn and understand music on many levels. How I hear it, play it, understand it, relate to it...really, everything. Among the many things it can be for me is a tool. If I want to communicate with another musician about music, especially if we want to perform or record together, it's a superbly helpful common language. One thing I can say with certainty is I have never seen music theory in any way be restrictive or constrictive. I experience music theory as descriptive, not prescriptive, so I never think of it as telling me, or anyone, that something cannot be done. Instead, it's a wonderful system and method to describe and communicate many aspects of music.

Each note of a composition you or another writes is like solving a puzzle. Composition is guided by melodic progression, tendency tones, active and stable notes, harmonic progressions, voice leading , counterpoint and rhythmic accents. You can't have one without the other. The best results are discovered if you can imagine all at the same time.

if you compose multi-part 12 tone music. many of these things don't matter in certain styles. even within the western bubble, your definition would not include snare drum compositions.

It does bring up an interesting philosophical question on how exactly to define "music"...and what exactly counts as a musical element.
