Prior to being diagnosed with cancer, Amy Capello wore her independence as a badge of honor. Navigating treatment during COVID meant even her mom could not be physically in the room with her. Her family, friends, and colleagues found other ways to support her which forced her to let go of her “toxic independence.” Amy encourages us to gratefully receive - rather than pushing back - when others show kindness. Amy Capello is a Life Balance Strategist and Certified Life Coach, helping people create whole-life balance and reclaim their joy. She faced cancer on her journey and has navigated being a single mom. Though she was coaching before her cancer diagnosis, she now lives life with a renewed sense of intention and urgency. Amy is volunteering with Little Pink Houses of Hope to bring a free retreat for breast cancer patients and their families to Tybee Island, Georgia this fall. She loves international traveling, volunteering with sea turtles and spending time with her family This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Thank you for this video! I had such an experience in my life as well, and it truly changed my life. Before hearing "You have 2 tumors in your hand", I was one of the most independent girls in this world. It was a difficult and long way to realize that people just wanted to help me without waiting to return it back. Now I know that asking for help and receiving it from those who suggest - it is not a weakness, it is a strength and power.

Learnings from the video - Being independent is good but don't be toxic independent. People loves to give so receive it with open hand and don't feel guilty about receiving. If you want to grow in life you need the support so accept any kind of support without feeling guilty about it. Gratitude for the learnings. ❤❤

She sees it as independence, but it also shows her hesitance to seek the help she truly desires. The act of accepting help can deeply influence her spiritual journey. Often, people neglect to seek divine guidance because such a strong sense of independence affects the three core aspects of life: mental, physical, and, believe it or not, spiritual.

Yes! It takes vulnerability to receive help & admit you can't do it alone. It really wasn't easy but it was worth it to lean in and learn.

In my point of view, through your experience, you returned to square one, which is the nature of human beings. That we have to live with each other in cohabitation and give and receive and vise versa.

That's so true! I had developed all of these skills to be independent, but going through this was tough. We all have a choice - lean in to the lessons when we're going through the hard stuff or build the wall higher. Since I couldn't change my diagnosis, I chose to lean in - but it wasn't easy.

What's funny is, I didn't even realize it at the time. I thought it showed my dedication & work ethic. In hindsight, after treatment, I finally processed what happened and realized how bad it was. There were so many things they did, but I know now how to stand up for myself and I won't let that happen again 🙏
