It would have sucked. Probably why they often used prisoners to do stuff like that, either your own criminals/deserters or POWs of the enemy side. I forget the battle/war (think it was the Mongols but idk) but remeber one case where they even used civilians they captured on their way to a siege, using civilians to kill their own people against their will.

They most likely used people that had natural immunity to it - individuals whom had already contracted and recovered from smallpox. Historically, it was long and widely recognized that individuals whom survived smallpox were immune to further infections, and were hence often utilized as caregivers to afflicted individuals. In fact, many parts of the world utilized the ingestion/inhalation of dried/ground smallpox scabs as an early, but risky, method of inoculation known as "variolation" (after Variola Major [smallpox]).

What makes Bioweapons scarier than nuclear weapons in my mind are the lack of available countermeasures. There are ways to intercept ICBMs. A nuclear-capable bomber can be intercepted. They can be stopped. Bioweapons cannot be stopped. The best countermeasure for a bioweapon is to be somewhere else.

There is plenty of counters to bioweapons, like antibiotics, washing hands, hand-sanitizers, masks etc. And if the bio is spread with missiles, then it can be intercepted.

My sister caught and nearly died from Typhoid fever as a child. She caught it from a river swimming hole we went to. That summer was a drought. Doctors said most likely the typhoid was stirred up from the river mud by animals while the water level was down, and the bacteria came out of its lytic cycle once it was stirred up.

@@xjunkxyrdxdog89 We have gas masks and Chemical suits although they are more to keep you alive for long enough to continue fighting rather than prevent you from getting sick. The protection doesn't particularly last long as they only contain activated charcoal, and not pressure suits like ones you see people in labs wearing. Additionally, if there is a perceived chemical threat medical personal may have injectors with things such as Atropine which is only effective against some Nerve agents. Outside that there isnt much you can do. Shitty reality of chemical warfare.

I don't know man chemical weapons are pretty serious.....your lungs unable to function as the mucosal lining in them is burned away as they rapidly fill with thick mucus and you begin to drown on dry land, snot that burns like acid pouring out of your nose and mouth uncontrollably, puss and thick mucus dripping from your eyes because your tear ducts are being chemically burned away, white phosphorus that spontaneously combusts into white flames that are as hot as the sun, said flames can't be extinguished with water and if you smother it to extinguish it will reignite immediately after it's exposed to air, it sticks to your skin and burns the flesh down to the bone, gas that covers your body in a slick oil that can't be removed with water and causes 3rd degree burns on any skin that isn't covered I can go on and on....give me smallpox over a chemical attack any day of the week

@@666drummer5It is a completely arbitrary measurement that has no basis in reality. For example we are currently 90s before midnight, which is closer than during most of the cold war. However the realistic chance of a nuclear war is basically zero and certainly much lower than during the cold war.

The real problem with bio weapons is that they follow the people. As in, they can be anywhere where people is. And they don't stay where they're deployed. A nuke is a one-and-done deal, wipes out a city, sure, but that's it, and fallout only affects certain areas depending on windage. A bio weapon deployed in NYC could potentially spread to the entirety of the US and many other nations before it is even noticed people are dying because of it specifically. And even if countermeasures are available, one just needs to look at the COVID pandemic to see how well all of those worked, given human stupidity... Not that I'm saying the pandemic was product of a bio weapon going "rogue", like many conspiracy theorists may suggest...

The whole release of ancient viruses is VERY misunderstood. The reason bacteria and viruses are capable of infecting humans is because they spacificly evolved to do so. Which means the odds of a virus from an era either prior to humans or from early to hid human evolution being able to unfect modern humans is actualy extremely low... almost 0. That's not to sat its impossible but the odds are so low that you should be more concerned about many many other things first.

@@davianoinglesias5030 true, however at that point you are bio engineering something (i would assume to be used as a weapon). in which case you wouldnt have any need to go to such lengths considering some of the diseases around today they could do that with far easier. Consider ebola, Rabies, Balamuthia encephalitis and brain-eating amoeba as 4 examples all of which have over a 95% fatality rate and arer all fairly well known and studied. combine some of the worst parts of those with something like covid or the flu which mutates very fast and you could have a real issue without having to figure out a disease that has never been seen before and how it could possibly be used.

One of my least favorite experiences serving in the U.S Army during the 1980s, besides KP and PT, was training for NBC (Nuclear-Biological-chemical) warfare. Wearing the heavy and the uncomfortable chemical suits with its charcoal lining and donning the gas mask were experiences I did not enjoy. To die of nerve agent was an awful death.
