For over six-decades, British artist David Hepher has explored the ubiquitous tower-blocks, high-rises, and public housing complexes of South London in layered paintings. Born in Surrey in 1935, Hepher’s interest in the urban landscape dates to his undergraduate studies at Camberwell School and later, the Slade School of Art, from which he emerged a realist painter. His fidelity to the landscape - in this case the industrialized housing estates that came to dominate post-war Britain - has been a lifelong pursuit.
Available to watch now is our newest documentary on this fascinating British painter! The profile invites you into Hepher’s studio, follows his exhibition at Flowers Gallery, and traces the artist’s avid eye for industrial architecture, while exploring how Hepher’s upbringing and artistic growth in England has shaped his philosophy on art.

Amazing painter. As an artist myself, I have come to terms with the fact that loosening up is the highest point of maturity.

My favourite line is "The Arts Council came asking if the College had any young artists they could put in a show, and they very kindly put me forward". Those were the days, eh?

What a wonderful, privileged career full of random opportunities and a straight path to doing whatever he wanted...'they gave me teaching jobs...' Man, I wonder if careers in painting happen like this any more...just graduate from art school and spend the rest of your life doing what you want.

I am happy Mr. Hepher managed to follow his muse. The one thing I take issue with was his use of an exact size photograph of his finished work. I don’t see any creativity there. In his later works there is an opening up or freedom added by the artist that I believe made these pieces “ come alive” so to speak. They managed to gain a personal “ truth” for the artist. Oddly, as I hate graffiti, I admit it added more to the work. Mr. Hepher’s desire to be mundane manifested into something more unique in his later work. While I am not a fan necessarily of - bigger is better- these pieces pale in the smaller sizes. They need the grandiosity of size which make them more successful.

These are filling in illustrations - they are not paintings. Painting addresses a multi complex problem. He illustrates but doesn't paint.
