Movie theaters have faced the existential threat of streaming services for more than a decade now. When services like Netflix or Hulu started booming, it opened a debate about movie theaters' future.
Still, box office remained the most lucrative way of distributing movies, particularly blockbusters. But then 2020 changed everything, leaving movie theaters pretty much useless amid a global pandemic where people can't gather in public places
The studio recently shocked the movie industry when they announced that their 2021 movies would be released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, their streaming service. It may sound simple, but it's a game-changer for the industry and a sign of the times.
A decision like this could be the final blow to that centennial rite of watching movies in a dark room with a giant screen, blasting sound, and a hundred other people. Let's talk about how the movie industry is changing for good.

The point has been made before that since movie theatres first appeared at the start of the 20th century they’ve had to deal with - Televisions - Video rental - Satellite/Cable - Internet Is streaming going to be anymore disruptive than video rentals? Than HBO? Movie theatres are struggling because they’re loaded with debt. But the fundamental business is still sound. People still eat in restaurants even though they can cook at home. People like to leave the house once in a while, to socialize. Movie theatres won’t die.

@@nemeanlioness yeah they're taking them out because of COVID. Too many places have shut theatres and many people simply won't go at the moment even where they're open. I don't believe movie theaters are going to dissappear, but also I don't think they are going to be as big of an industrie as they are now. I like the movie theater experience however if I have the option to just stay home, find my own snacks, and be on my own comfy couch, I'm gonna take it. I don't go to the movies that often anyway. If they want to survive, provide more than just better audio and bigger screen, that's something ppl willing to cut if that mean paying less.

I think independent movies should go to streaming and tv shows. Block busters and comedies and horror and maybe a great drama should go to theaters.. people are gonna get lazy and stay home but the studio would lose money and the experience of a classic film will be no more cause there are so many different things coming out each week. Subscriptions would go up. Pirating movies. If I’m the studio this summer I would protect some properties and have it for theaters only.

This isn't the first time cinemas have been threatened by a combination of technology and circumstances. The advent of TV and other forms of home entertainment has steadily eaten away at their prestige. They've never been able to regain the glory days of the 1930s. In fact, if they want to remain relevant, they must focus all their efforts on enhancing the experience technology-wise, which is exactly what they did to survive before, creating awesome stuff like IMAX, 3D, etc. Like the proverbial Red Queen from Alice through the looking glass, they'll have to keep running to remain where they are. There's no other way for them to challenge the convenience of instant gratification offered by streaming platforms. The tickets must be redeemed for something more than just a big screen, loud noise and noisy fellow movie goers.

I don't think that movie theatres will go away. People still love the experience of going out with their friends and watching a new movie. But the business model behind it all will have to change. I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix or Amazon will buy movie theatres like AMC and show their newest titles on there for free to current subscribers. That would be a new disruptive way that could change the business, keep the classic filmmakers like Nolan happy, compete with other movie chains, and give consumers something they want at a cheaper price. And they'll still upsell stuff at the movie theatre like popcorn and nicer heated seats One thing is for certain though. Movies will be competed out to be cheaper in the future. But that doesn't mean they aren't going anywhere. I think it just means it's going to mean less money per individual title for the production companies that make them. It'll be a high volume, low cost way of making movies, which can be good because that can bring back niche, riskier movies than just the tentpole movies that you see. The same way that uploading constantly to youtube works. You don't make a ton on one upload, but the sum of all your videos together creates a library. Making movies for the smallest viable audience is the new game; not movies to just appeal to the masses. The business models for movies will change in my opinion. Less money, more competition, more jobs, better overall customer experience. And while films are still monstrously expensive to make, they're getting cheaper than ever as well with new technology being developed every year in tangent.

I think it's very interesting because "the movie" experience is often about the public watching a movie with you if the audience laughs or gets scared or someone really loudly comments on something really dumb happening on the screen so everyone laughs at it, but it's obviously not for everyone. My favorite movie theater died during the pandemic, while I still love movies in the cinema I don't know if I'll attach the same way to another movie theater, and probably the whole culture of watching something dumb in the cinema is dying out. I remember watching really stupid movies in the cinema while there was just me or 2-3 more guests in the audience and it's the most wholesome experience you can get and now I question if movies will even entertain the idea of showing the movie to 1-3 guests at the time.

I did not go to movie theater once in last 10 years. Why? * 20 minutes of ads before movie starts * This needs too much planning from my side, which I no longer afford. * There are too many people in one place. I hate people. Is had to happen eventually. It's like CDs, the studios did everything to combat all other methods, until they gave in. The problem is with old rich guys who are too stupid to grasp the new "internet" concept and too slow to adapt.

Imagine a world wherein 2008ish as Netflix made it clear that streaming was the future, AMC partnered with or set up a competing business model to deliver a home streaming service. Combine in-person watching with future streaming rights and tie in group watching through a synced up watching experience to keep the social aspect in place while preparing for the streaming world. Writing's been on the wall for a decade now that eventually streaming would take off, and the theaters didn't do anything to combat that.

In my opinion, good riddance to movie theaters. It’s been a while since I’ve had a positive experience in one. People are loud or on their phones and there is no enforcement from staff. I hate having to watch movies with strangers and I hate having to pay $15 without knowing I’m whether I’m going to have a good experience or a terrible one. If AMC had done a better job of enforcing their rules like the Alamo Drafthouse or other places like it, then I would feel sadder. But they don’t.

Easy, steaming wins. Cinemas are expensive and require double the time commitment to watch a film (feature length+travel+ticket buying). Streaming is so convenient and I can have whatever snacks I like at home. I agree big blockbusters are better experienced in cinemas but most of them are also available on streaming really quick now so a lot of revenue will disappear from cinemas soon. In some years last decade 50% of cinema revenue came from superhero movies which are now all going to be on Disney+ or HBO Max.

Its now September. Its clear people don't want to go to the theater. 2022 could be the end of the theater and the beginning of digital distribution for new movies as the standard business model before it goes to streaming.

I don't understand. Are these rights just for 2021? Won't the movie theaters regain that right in 2022?

I like the Warner bros option. I can pick and choose how I want to watch my movies (preferably in the theaters). If it’s a slow yet powerful movie like Judas and the Black Messiah I’ll stay home and watch it. But if it’s a big blockbuster like Kong V Godzilla or Dune I wanna go out and watch it in theaters

Warner is the kid with development challenges, the day they released WW84 was downloaded by free at 4kHDR around the globe, the subsecuents movie release suffer the same phenomenon, so they open Piracy's Pandora's box

I would have to disagree with the home theater argument, I'm not sure what you mean by heavily invested, as that means different things to everyone. However, you can definitely get really close to a true movie theater experience and in my opinion, a better experience at home. For 1.5-4k you can get an amazing experience at home (please use real speakers and subs and not sound bars) and the theaters began to seem kinda weird given you can tweak the sound how you want it at home, can eat whatever you want, watch multiple movies, no parking to deal with, invite your friends over, etc. Right now I have a ~3k set up with 2k of that going into speakers (though I bought used so my true cost was around 1.8k for everything). Sound wise I feel like I'm at the movies, and next upgrade will be a projector, then possibly move everything to the basement, etc you can go look at some crazy setups on KZfaq.

It's NETFLIX'S fault for not giving The Mitchells Vs The Machines it's theatrical run since the pandemic is blowing over, and cinemas are reopening! WHAT THE HELL, SONY?? Why aren't you giving your movie a re-release in cinemas soon!!!!!!!!!!

Well, pandemic aside, this is why I don't go to the movie theater. I don't like paying $15 for popcorn. I don't like paying $5 for soft drink. I don't like paying $10 for hot dog. But most of all I don't like paying to watch commercials. If they announce that the movie starts at 3:00 and I am there on time and then have to watch 45 minutes of commercials before the movie starts, well, that offends me. Bottom line, the movie going experience sucks and I don't bother with it any more.

Actually thats not as great as it sounds. For example in my country in ending days of Movie Theater showing certain movie you can get tickets for as low as 2$. However, when they started to dump movies right into online services those movies was available only for purchase with like 5-6$ per movie. Right, after some time movies get rent option with like 1.5-2$, but its usually way later. And not ALL movie is great to watch at home, so...
