Hello Keven, hope you are doing well. Loved the presentation. Naval battles are always brutal, as you can't exactly walk home if defeated. In the modern navy, damage control training is given special attention. Hull damage, if your quick, can be repaired and flooding controlled. If you want to know what really scares a sailor, it is fire. The fire destroys electrical equipment, you can no longer pump the water out of the people tank and just breathing becomes an issue. In the submarine service, if your at a shallow enough depth, you can seal the compartment and pump high pressure air in (real hard on the eardrums) and force the water out. I've learned more about the hundred years war, watching your videos, than I did in school. Keep up the great work.

@5:10 I am reading 'The Stolen Village' by Des Ekin about exactly that. It is about Baltimore town, County Cork, on the south coast of Ireland, which was raided by Ottoman Turkish troops and the infamous Barbary Pirates of their client states.

I am now addicted to this series!Cant wait for part 8!!

What a battle! Having ships tied to ships and heavy weights being dropped. Truly a horrendous battle to fight.

Hard to imagine how that sort of combat would play out as fighting men scrambled onto enemy ships, amongst hoards of arrows and other projectiles, from both sides to engage in total mayhem hand to hand! Thanks for bringing it to life.

Great summary (and models) of this 100 Years War sea battle. The English fleets turning the weather gage advantage of the French fleet against them suggests those Anglo-Normans hadn't quite forgotten the tactics that their Viking ancestors used to win sea battles.

I've honestly never heard of this battle, although I was aware of the scourge of piracy in the Channel at that time, but it's a great feat of arms by the English considering the relative power of the opposing force, and the Castilians were soundly defeated. Bravo on your presentation!

The Hundred Years war is my favorite period/subject of the middle ages. I'm also very interested in nautical/sailing history, and these early battles under sail are not often talked about. Wonderful video! You've got yourself a new subscriber here.

I came across this purely by accident and loved it so much I've subscribed. I'm a Carpenter & Joiner and much of my work is around Winchelsea. Little known fact , Old Wichelsea was decimated by the great storm of 1290 (ish) so they relocated Winchelsea to it's present location. The location of Old Winchelsea has been lost in time but some believe it was located on the Broomhill flats (modern day East of Camber). I knew there had been a Battle at Winchelsea as it's on some maps but never knew the real story so thanks for that. Around 1290 (ish) The French attacked Rye which is around 3 miles form Winchelsea and set the Town ablaze and along with all the valuables they stole they took the Church Bell from St Mary's Church.. The men of Rye were a hardy bunch so they popped over to France, robbed and pilliaged but also bought back the Church Bell of St Mary's church in Rye........ Lesson to the French, don't mess with Sussex Folk. As the old saying goes "You can pook and you can shuv, but Sussex folk wunt be druv".. Meaning that if you push too hard we will bite you in the arse............... Great video and I look forwad to watching more....

Fantastic video! I love naval history, but had not heard of this battle before. Edward III seemed to have a keen eye for enemy weakness. His enemies only had to slip up once to lose the battle.
