Interstate Motor Company I think I just read a comment from you in another video giving credit to how Garret handles his business. I couldn’t agree more. I’m not sure why I spent so much time not following along, I honestly think it was from some of his subscribers who would be on every other car video I watched talking about how Leroy would “destroy” whatever car was in the video and I suppose it just annoyed me. Turns out he’s nothing like I would have expected and super humble and willing to make mistakes and own them as well as sharing all the victories with everyone around him.

So to explain a couple things. The short travel lifters aka Johnson lifters are specially made Hydraulic roller lifters. What they are is hydraulic lifters with less movement in the piston that pushes the rod up and down. The reason you do that is normal hydraulic lifters maintain the rocker to valve gap, on solid lifters there is no piston to provide clearance they use an actual gap to let the valve close. On a short travel lifter it uses oil pressure and a small movement to control the gap.. essentially it's a short travel precision gaped internally controlled lifter. it is a solid lifter with a built in gap.. It allows the cam to be used on the street lower rpm useage and have the characteristics of a solid without the maintenance and need to gap them from time to time. Ring gap is easy to understand. Piston rings need a gap so they do not seize in the piston bore when hot. The factory builds the engines to make roughly 400 hp and only needs a small gap to control the combustion process and maintain oiling in the cylinder. On a boosted engine they produce a prodigious amount of heat and metal expands when heated. When you put a lot of heat on the ring they grow and can touch, If they touch they can lock the piston to the cylinder, and the connecting rod and crank keep moving and basically you pull the piston apart at the ring land which is what happened with the other engine. So to stop that from happening you add more expansion room to the piston ring and they do not touch *hopefully* and then the ultimate limit to power is the parts themselves, aka pistons and connecting rods.. that motor should make 8-900 hp and live for a long time if oil pressure is maintained and the rev limiter works in case a drivetrain part fails. I'll take connecting rods for 100 cleeter with cylinder 6/8 for 500 >;) Ls's are notorious for destroying cylinder 6/8 because of overheating they are the last cylinders to receive water cooling and run hottest and if you watch racing channels and stuff that use ls engines they seem to be where stuff breaks the most. This should be fun to watch.

I am sitting here with the morning coffee watching you guys fit rings. I have done it so many times over the last 40 plus years I don't remember the numbers .ha ha. I have one of those ring compressors which I was given back in 1975 and a few years ago it finally wore out .It was already old when I got it, great little tool. When I fit rings and bearings I use that thick engine stuff from Moreys or Lucas. . Works well, but dont put it in the oil for the initial break in because the rings won't seat too well. 😁

I hate those compressors so much. I broke a ring on my motor, then invested in one of the conical ARP compressors. They're around $35-$75, each one only fits one piston diameter, but they go in perfect every time, and the best part is that the compressor doesn't touch the piston, just the rings, so they slide through super easy.

James is right. In the early 90s I had to replace the head in my 1979 VW Golf GTI. I thought I knew what I was doing. I had a Chilton manual and I still screwed it up. I put my head gasket in upside down and siezed the new head. So 750 German Marks for each head and an additional 100 marks for the gaskets and head bolts. That little screwup cost me an additional $1150. Total replacement cost was $2500. The extra $150 was for pizza and beer for use of the motor bay and the motor sergeants presence while I was doing the work. He helped occasionally. I will never forget to look for the mark on the top of the head gasket again...... Good work Garrett!

Sometimes working on a car is fun and sometimes no fun at all, depending on what you're doing, where you're doing it, and why you have to do it. But once you have an engine on the stand with a box full of new parts nearby, the rebuild is always pleasurable work. And the excitement and satisfaction you get when it fires up and runs nicely is hard to duplicate.

You have the best "Family" INCLUDING all the teams that help with parts. There have been a few instances in the past, IE: Leeroy's engine tare down and the statue that was made, and now with "Part2" on the lifters. It really makes for a "jolly family orientated" channel! So this shout out goes to Everyone at your shop Cleetus, as well as ALL the teams that assist with parts, support etc etc.

It's also good to give the ring compressor a few taps with the hammer handle on the outside wall to ensure that the rings are seated deeply into the ring lands before rechecking the tightness and then tap the piston into the hole.

Something about how you buys not only build and race these machines, but the personalities AND the personalities you give your cars [with names] that hearkens back to 'the olden days' when I was young and we would race [minus all that high dollar machinery from pro building shops...none of us had any of that stuff or the money for it, but oh well] our own hand built home made machines.

Gapping and indexing piston rings is FUN! Years ago I was helping a friend build a small block 350 for his wife's car. Layed all the parts out (I was doing the pistons while he got the crank and rod bearings ready). Oh what is THIS? In the TRW kit is an extra top ring! My evil streak came out. I hid it. Fast forward to when we had the engine built and in the car ready to fire up and I layed the extra ring on the console. He gets in the car to fire it up and goes batshit! Took me an hour and a beer to convince him that it WAS an extra ring! Then the passenger front core plug leaked (they are NOT "freeze plugs" only to clean the casting sand out of the blocks). At least that one is easy to get to!

CLEETER! You should get a sealed oil system for the turbskie because we know it'll blow again, and if you do that, you shouldn't get metal shavings in the bearings and everything else from the engine's oil!

I suspect you'll find the said turbskie is going to last a lot longer than you think. It got a brand new center cartridge, and was rebuilt by Precision Turbo. Might as well be a brand new turbo.
@caleballen3511
@caleballen3511 5 жыл бұрын
@J-Edgar Hughes Yeah, you've got a point, I'm just thinking it will last a little longer without metal being fed to it all the time, until the piston explodes again and a chunk of piston gets into it.

Great idea with the mini harbor freight bench grinder! Way cheaper than an actual ring filer. 👍🏻 I loath those old school adjustable ring compressors though. Lost count of how many rings I’ve broken with one of those over the years. I switched to the exact fit compressors a few years back. Way easier to pop into the bore and less time consuming. 😉

The reason you use a hand grinder or file to clearance ring gaps is to prevent heating the ends up, making them brittle. Little pieces can break off and be carried by the oil to the bearings.
