The team behind the MA 250 see a world with super-efficient lightweight internal combustion powered automobiles. They believe that the ICE is a proven technology that deserves to be bettered. The team has spent years developing a totally new take on the Internal combustion motor. Now there goal is to use there new engine technology to create a family of lighter, smaller, eco-friendly engines that will help to create a cleaner, better world.
So what makes the MA-250 better than a traditional Internal combustion engine? Well lets find out.

Thank you for sharing our story. In regards to the longevity/durability of the head sealing system.. The engine has run with the current head and seal design for about dozens of hours over probably hundreds of runs over the last two years. The seals are ceramic rings backed up with a thin steel washer, teflon seal, then wave springs. While this design works, the wave springs tend to lose their "springiness" over the course of several heat cycles. We are working on a design which would further remove the wave springs from the combustion event. This is generally the only fail point on the engine. All of the gearing for the con-rods, fixed ring gear, pinion gears, crank weights, bearings, cylinder, shaft etc. have held up wonderfully over many hours of hard dyno-testing. Since the video was released in January we have redesigned the fan and fan housing, which has allowed the engine to stay much cooler. Lots of work to integrate a starter with a smaller flywheel, internal mechanical fuel pump, but those are relatively small projects in relation to what has gone into this so far. Thanks once more, -Landon

Just a quick note about the yamaha yzf250 engine weight comparison, the transmission of any traditional dirtbike is integrated with the engine making it take up less space vs having the engine separated from the transmission. By comparing the avadi engine to the yzf engine its unfair due to the inclusion of the transmissions weight. If you want a fair comparison, then compare to the weight of a standalone engine like a Tillotson 225 or handicap the avadi engine by adding the weight of transmission to the avadi engine weight.

This concept adds more complexity, than it avoids. Some details of this approach have been seen in other approaches, but neither rotating cylinders nor rotating valves made it into mass production or at least mentionable prototypes. Moving masses and building complexity do explode compared to a 2-stroke, even if adding an intake valve system and exhaust/backpressure control. I'd also say, that friction/lubing and soundness problems will make servicing and lifetime a nightmare.

Definitely workable, but how this engine could be better than a conventional one is debatable. It definitely has more complexity, replacing the tried and proven crank and connecting rod with two cranks, two connecting rods and some gears. That rotating piston head is similar to the now extinct sleeve-valve technology of WW2, and would likely incur the same disadvantages such as high oil consumption. One on top of the other, I don't think the piston engine as a concept can be improved.

It doesn’t make it simpler it makes it practically impossible. You‘d need to decouple the cylinder head from the cylinder and hook that up to a separate gearbox (ew) to adjust the valve timing. Not to mention you could only adjust timing and not lift, that would necessitate even more insane complexity. People try to act like the modern ICE is so bad and flawed it needs to be re-designed, which is simply not the case.

@@SahnigReingeloetet you just rotate the cylinder head but as pointed out you need a rotatable head gasket which might be impossible or at least very complex. it seems we get new designs like this all the time, yet they never pan out to become production engines. anyone remember "the duke" engine? it was a 5 cylinder engine that was supposed to have the power of a 6 cylinder engine, while being as smooth as an electric engine. the ad even had them balancing a coin on the engine. what ever happened to that engine? it was too complicated to manufacture while this engine is really cool, I don't see them being able to make a production engine that will fill a requirement. the engine will either be too small to be beneficial, or too large to manufacture. the larger you go, the harder it becomes to maintain a seal on the spinning cylinder. metals expand at a percentage rate, yet seals don't scale at a percentage rate. if on a small engine, you need 0.001" of tolerance on a 1" piston, that's doable, but if you have a 2" piston, you still need to maintain that 0.001" of tolerance, making it next to impossible to scale the engine to a larger size. so you will have a very difficult to manufacture small engine, probably costing around $3000, that you can go to harbor freight and get a similar engine for $300. that cheaper engine will have more parts compatibility as it is based on a Honda engine, so spare parts will be easier, cheaper and more forthcoming, while spare parts for this engine will be the exact opposite, more difficult to find, more expensive, and less options.

@@timduncan8450How does a single cylinder engine run with little vibration in any scenario? This engine doesn't have balancers so most of the vibration on this engine would make the whole thing vibrate back and forth against the crankshaft beating whatever transmission is attached into submission. At least with conventional engines the vibration can be seen in the rotation instead of turning the crankshaft into a hammer drill or jackhammer bit.

This is an interesting engine, however, why compare capacity with another engine?. What matters is specific fuel consumption for energy output. I also wonder how well the sealing of the port plate will work. Also wonder about the frictional losses of the double crank. How is the heat dissapated from the rotating port plate ? It might be a good engine to scale up to keep the rotational speed down. Very interested to see further developments and more technical detail.

Your intake could serve as the injection chamber to turn fuel into a vapor Gas as a vapor burns hoter cleaner and faster, you would have to make this an oil cooled engine.

I don't see the point of trying to "revolutionise" the interal combustion when the emphasis is to try and eliminate it all together.

That's a bad emphasis. The emphasis should be on creating carbon neutral fuels, such as the green crude oil Sapphire Energy was making 14 years ago before the gas prices dropped again and funding dried up. Since the algae makes the oil from CO2 in the atmosphere, it is literally carbon neutral-burning it only puts back what you took out of the atmosphere. That way even cargo ships, jets, and trains are don't add excess carbon to the atmosphere, much less cars and trucks. I mean they were far enough along that really all that was needed was a single gene edit to make the algae "sweat" the oil so energy intensive drying and expression would not be necessary, you'd literally just skim the algae tanks. They were trying to set up a deal with Monsanto to do just that when investment dried up.

So it's an overly complicated replacement for a convention crank that doesn't have the balancing and side thrust benefits of a rombolic drive, mated to an under developed Aspin rotary valve. Two backwards steps at once....

If they just rotate the piston is fine. Rotating the cylinder sleeve with that opening would made it wear worse

Way too much inertia. Those two crankshafts need to change direction twice per cycle, that's twice wasted energy of a normal engine, not to mention that the rotation will have unwanted torque, also wasted energy.

Changing direction doesn't really waste energy (except from friciton and such), all that energy of the deaccelerating piston will go into the crankshaft. But maybe you mean it causes extra unwanted forces and more wear, which would be true.

So, you say piston will move up and down and also rotate inside the cylinder. Does that mean wear and tear increases. Also 1 crown gear and 2 helical gears will add upto the wear and tear. Also, maintenance will increase with this. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

No you can do more cylinders assembled in one engine just by coupling them through conrod gears. BUT there is no simplicity or minimalism it's an overengeneered concept with no or not much benefits compared to standard ICE.

ok but even if the engine wheight half, it's still the same displacement for less power. so if you want same power you have to increase displacement thus wheight and size. so i don't think it's really a good alternative. and it seems really not practical to service, it looks like it's sealed.
