I had a crush on my art teacher in 9th grade. Her name was Mrs Caswell. She was a shapely brunette. I told her I liked the B52s and she said she listened to them in college. We got to talking and she told me about this album. "Can you make a copy for me?" I asked her. She ended up giving me the cassette she bought. I will remember her.

This is by far one of my favorite B's albums.... I discovered it after buying the Nude on the Moon anthology and the rest is history! Love "Ain't it A Shame and She Breaks for Rainbows", and despite the melancholy feeling of the music, still is a great album! 🌼RIP Ricky🌼

BOTS is almost like the exact opposite (in terms of popularity) of Cosmic Thing: It's the album you'll most often hear hardcore fans naming as their favorite--simply knowing about it goes a long way to establishing one's fan cred...This was Ricky Wilson's final album, and even the band themselves rarely play songs from it, so painful are the memories it elicits. Indeed, the melancholy seems to have infused the music itself, which ironically makes the B's finest album also their least known... On the other hand, if you were alive in the 1990s, you know at least one song off Cosmic Thing (probably Love Shack--but possibly Roam). It was the megahit album that brought the band back to life--like a phoenix rising from the ashes of tragedy...And it was and remains fantastic, one of the defining albums of the late 80s and early 90s--but it was also overplayed and overexposed. It's sad--these are probably the B-52's two best albums: One will always be associated with tragedy, and thus remain obscure and underrated....The other is brilliant, but dismissed as Top 40 fluff.

James Daniels I love their first and second albums as they were a fresh, new band, I mean, it's hard to choose a fav B-52's album. However, man, I think your text was brilliantly written and the way you could notice and put into words the melancholy in the music and contrast it to its fascination was beautiful!

+James Daniels On October 12, 1985, at the age of 32, Wilson died from complications related to AIDS following the recording of the band's fourth studio album Bouncing off the Satellites. According to Keith Strickland, the album had been completed and mixed before Ricky's death, with only the cover art not yet designed (an illustration by Kenny Scharf was ultimately decided upon). Devastated, the band went into seclusion and did not tour to promote the album, although did several photo shoots and TV appearances, as well as filming a video for "Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland".

+GREEK HUMMUS I know, the fact that the mournful feel I get from some of the album's tracks (Ain't It A Shame, She Brakes For Rainbows, to name two) is there regardless of the fact that Ricky was alive when they were recorded may just be projection on my part, but it doesn't make the feelings any less real.

I would have to pretty much totally agree here. Although a little late to the party (out of bounds) knowing only some of the pop hits for several years, by the time Cosmic Thing was out I had become a fan, and having an old brother who owned pretty much every pop/rock album between 1963 and when he passed away in 1997, having inherited his collection I didn't have to buy much music, so discovering the B-52's more thoroughly was an easy task. After listening to all the albums numerous times, including the later releases, and as brilliant an album as I think Cosmic Thing is (Dry County and Topaz are standouts for me), I think this album is my favorite by them.

I've been a B's fan for 25 years and strangely this album seems to stand the test of time more than the others. This was their first "serious" album (relative speaking of course). It's probably because this is not the sound they are remembered for. Just my opinion anyway. "She Brakes for Rainbows" is a beautiful track.

It was a different and serious album, agreed, but it was not promoted, as when it was released in '86, Ricky had already passed away. His sister Cindy and the founder of the group, was still in mourning and could have cared less about the recording.... well understood. I was lucky enough to see them, "live"

I had been a fan since their debut album, when I first heard this release while visiting a friend in southern California. I still associate BOTS with riding around LA, Santa Barbara, and Huntington and Laguna beaches and the whole vibe of the area. It's a shame this album never got the recognition it deserved, but considering what the band was dealing with with the loss of Ricky Wilson to AIDS after completion and with no promotion it's understandable. Otherwise, I think this could have been a huge hit--It's such a great album!

this has always been my favorite b52's album, bar none, period. i always thought this was the best produced and best sounding one of them all. really like the creativity of the songs. every song on this album is great and i never understood why it didn't get that much airplay. when it first came out, i ran out and bought the cd, sounded great on my home and car system. favorite songs on here are theme for a nude beach, aint it a shame, she brakes for rainbows, summer of love, girl from ipanema, detour thru your mind, then the rest, all in that order. however, i do find whammy a very close second to this album, needless to say, these are my favorite 2 albums by them. i love the rest as well but these 2 stand out the most for me, bouncing and whammy. after cosmic thing i didn't keep up with them as much as i should, had all the albums up to cosmic thing. peace.

I lived in the B-52's home town of Athens GA for about 20 years so I have an interesting almost "inside view" of this wonderful group. The local opinion of the B-52's varied considerably. Many of the local musicians opinions of them were not especially good. Basically, the feeling was, if theses guys can be make it, anyone can. Of course, a large amount of envy was in this equation. Also, REM was hot during this time. Athens became a Mecca for musicians of various kinds. It was a great time to be a local. The bar scenes were just amazing

Cosmic Thing was my introduction to the B's in 89 then I started getting all the albums (or cassettes as it were) as I could find them. (Kinda tough pre-internet!) I don't know if I'd call BOTS my favorite B's album. (For me choosing a favorite would be a difficult task anyway as there are very few songs I don't like!) It is special though as there is a different feel it, there is a more prominent bass line and the songs themselves feel "tighter", it is the last one with Ricky and the only one to not include a group photo (or graphical depiction in the case of Mesopotamia) of the band on the cover. It is a bridge from how they sounded on the first three to what they sound like on the last three. (Or hopefully four.) I saw them for the fourth time in my life last night in Madison and it was the first time I heard anything from BOTS live when they played "Wig". (Actually a song late as Fred set up a perfect segue playing with a wig after "Party out of Bounds" but they didn't capitalize on it. (They did play it one song later though.) The only album they skipped last night was Whammy!.

Sinead O'Connor [of all people!] does a bang-up cover of "Ain't It A Shame" on 2003's "She Who Dwells in the Secret Place of the Most High Shall Abide Under the Shadow of the Almighty" [dear Satan, it's as long as a Fionna Apple CD title!]. Her production team VASTLY improves on the draggy original song, percolating it with a faster tempo and swirling, swoopy synths that connotate the sounds of a spaceship soaring-- aurally illustrating the lyric, "Flying saucers could land/And it wouldn't make much difference to my man."
