I'm glad Ann turned down doing this song and that Nancy had a cold when she recorded this. A ton of circumstances leading to this being their first #1 hit. Just amazing ladies.

A rare glimpse inside a studio where a dynamite song is crafted. Thanks for posting this.

I think the most amazing thing about her recording session of this song is that she has stated in interviews that she actually had a cold when she recorded it and yet despite that, she still sounded perfect!

Wow, I'm impressed you have the unique recording of Nancy singing while she was sick. Her voice cracks sometimes and she really has to push. You can tell near the end that it's really starting to wear her down. They tried re-recording it after she felt better but they ended up sticking with the initial tracks because they liked the emotion and rawness, and it ended up becoming their first #1 hit.

Nancy Wilson is not only an excellent guitarist, she is beautiful, she has a phenomenal voice, they could have recorded more songs with her in the first voice, and Ann in the second voice, simply spectacular!!!

I think they were purposely trying to tire out her voice to get takes with the perfect amount of rasp. This is a technique producers actually use. You can hear more rasp in her vocal the longer she goes; which is how it ended up on the album. And it sounds GREAT.
@taylorh44802 ай бұрын
it's actually quite well known that she was recovering from laryngitis when she tracked these vocals. She said it was actually difficult after the album version was recorded for her to sing it that raspy live because it was a product of her being sick in the studio and she had to learn how to do it afterwards. They weren't trying to tire her out in this video, they were looking for very specific things in the vocal performance that had been requested by the songwriters, since Heart did not write this song. it was written for Stevie Nicks originally and Nancy fell in love with it and wanted it for the self titled heart record.

different mic placements on different takes can lead to certain sonic textures that they are looking for.

So cool to see them in the studio, working on what was going to be a smash-hit album. It shows how hard it is to make an album, how complicated it is-- all the retakes, etc. Cool stuff.
